Proposed District 10 regions released

The District 10 Committee has released its list of proposed regions for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years. The committee members have a little less than two weeks to review each sport before meeting on Feb. 8 in Sharon to finalize all regions.

Rivals Villa Maria and Mercyhurst Prep have been placed in the same region for girls basketball, while Tidioute Charter has elected to compete in region play. Tidioute has always been a member of District 10 but opted to play an independent schedule. TCCS will compete in girls volleyball, boys basketball, girls basketball, girls swimming, boys cross country and girls cross country.

I wondered how they would do up AA girls regions. I know travel and expenses are an issue but to have an A/AA region is a mess. And to throw Tidioute Charter in that region w/some of those other A teams…..ugh. I feel bad for Region 2. I feel really bad for Region 4. Ouch. A very, very good team will miss out on the playoffs frequently.

    JT,
I honestly could see them taking only one AA team from 3, three from Region 2 and four from Region 4 to the playoffs. D-10 does take schedules into account and having a huge Class A presence will hurt those AA teams in 3.

What might have been better is take Cambridge, Maplewood, Saegertown and Union City into its own girls AA region with required crossover games with the Class A Crawford teams. Who knows, maybe a committee member will propose that at the meeting. Remember these are only proposals and not finalized yet.

    Thanks,
    Tom

What is Youth Educational? I believe they are in Region 1 for boys basketball? Is D10 A going to be taken over by a charter school now like most of the other districts in the state?

  4. baca says:

There is a very good possibility that the three conneaut schools will combine into one AAA school. This would make it easier to put them into the AAA region with meadville while leaving their current region at a reasonable size. Conneaut’s decision must be made by April I believe.

  5. Tom Reisenweber says:

Well the decision had to be in by the fall but Conneaut fell behind. The PIAA will not be happy if they combine and every sport is affected.

    Thanks,
    Tom

Youth Educational is the school D-10 approved in August that is like a VisionQuest. Small school in Mercer County and is in basketball and track and field.

    Thanks,

Also, I saw in your bracketology post that you said that it wouldn’t work economically to move Rocky Grove and VQ to region 3. After seeing the new proposed regions for Single A, there could not have been any thoughts of economics and travel distance. Those Conneaut schools are going to have to travel close to 70 miles or more one way multiple times a year. They had an opportunity to fix this geographically and economically and they may have dropped the ball on this.

  8. Tom Reisenweber says:

Well going to Warren County might not be as bad as VQ and RG being split among three counties every week. I think it worked out well.

    Thanks,
    Tom

I know nobody cares about volleyball, but it is probably the most difficult sport to make the playoffs in AA & A because there are so many teams and they only take 8 of the 20-24 teams in those divisions. So why would one strictly AA region have 7 and the other have 9? And yet also one of 2 AA teams in region 6 gets an automatic berth and the region 4 teams get equal credit for beating A teams. There is no committee making decisions in volleyball, it is all region champion (or class leader)and winning percentage. (And don’t get me started on the ridiculous pool play playoffs D10 uses)

  10. JS says:

I thought the idea of going to regions was to have teams play like opponents in size. I hate that that District 10 combines teams from different classifications in the same region. If they are going to do that lets go back to our old leagues and reform the Metro, Erie County League, French Creek Valley league and others.

  11. Tom Reisenweber says:

    JS,
In most sports D-10 has kept classes in different regions. As with most things, there are a few exceptions simply because there was no other choice. If you want to give me specific sports you see bad discrepancies in I can further discuss it.

    Thanks,
    Tom
