Garmon’s U.S. Team loses in International Bowl

AUSTIN, Texas — The International Bowl high school football all-star game didn’t go as expected for Greg Garmon or his U.S. Team Wednesday night.

Garmon, a McDowell senior running back, was limited to two rushes for 6 yards in the U.S. Under-19 National Team’s 35-29 loss to the International Federation of American Football World Team in the third annual International Bowl.

The 6-foot 2-inch, 200-pound Garmon signed his letter of intent to Iowa earlier in the day. The World Team rolled to a 21-9 halftime lead and eventually led 28-9 before the U.S. closed the gap.

“The World Team — they’re getting better and better every year,” Garmon said. “They play really well. Now I’ve got to go to campus and listen to them.”

Garmon was referring to two future teammates on the World Team — wide receiver Tevaun Smith of Toronto and defensive end Faith Ekakatie of Brampton, Ontario.

Garmon wasn’t alone in struggling on the ground. The U.S. team’s leading rusher had just 14 yards.

Despite the tough night, Garmon said he had an enjoyable time in Texas.

“The week was great — just being around the guys and all of these great athletes,” he said.
