McDowell 2nd, Fort LeBoeuf 3rd in PIAA team wrestling

The McDowell wrestling team placed second at the PIAA Class AAA championships today after losing to top-ranked and unbeaten Canon-McMillan 35-20 in the title dual at Hershey’s Giant Center.

(Fans can watch a replay of the dual on the Pennsylvania Cable Network today at 8 p.m.)

McDowell, the first District 10 program ever to make the AAA title round, closed its dual season at 17-2. Canon-McMillan, ranked first in the state and also listed in national polls, finished 26-0.

Fort LeBoeuf, meanwhile, recorded three victories today, including a 30-28 win over Brookville in the Class AA third-place dual. The Bison (19-3) avenged a 34-30 loss to the Raiders at the Ultimate Duals Jan. 21, while Brookville slipped to 20-6.

Class AAA final




120 pounds — Conner Schram (CM) p Paul Deitz 3:04. Canon-McMillan 6-0. The state’s top-ranked wrestler rolled Deitz for the fall with a 10-3 lead at the time.

126 — Nick Gibson (Mc) d Colt Shorts 8-6 OT. Canon-McMillan 6-3. Gibson got the winning takedown at the edge of the circle with 46 seconds left in the extra minute.

132 — Malachi Krenzelak (CM) md Noah Burkhart 17-4. Canon-McMillan 10-3. Conceded escape points comprised Burkhart’s points.

138 — Steve Spearman (Mc) d Solomon Chishko 2-1 UTB. Canon-McMillan 10-6. In a match befitting the state’s top two ranked wrestlers, Spearman rode out Chishko for the third 30-second session.

145 — Cody Nolan (Mc) d Sammy Minor 10-5. Canon-McMillan 10-9. Nolan breaks a tie match with a takedown and a near fall over the final minute.

152 — Tyree Spearman (Mc) d Dario Dobbin 3-2. McDowell 12-10. Spearman’s escape point with 1:48 left has the Trojans leading the state’s top-ranked AAA team.

160 — Jimmy Paulson (Mc) d William Pihiou 3-2. McDowell 15-10. Paulson makes a second period takedown hold up for the Trojans’ fourth straight victory.

170 — Cody Wiercioch (CM) p Anthony Forne 1:50. Canon-McMillan 16-15. The state’s No. 1 wrestler at 170 needed less than two minutes to end McDowell’s momentum.

182 — Khlique Harris (Mc) tf Zach Thomas 23-8 4:57. McDowell 20-16. Harris bull rushed Thomas almost at will en route to his commanding victory.

195 — Ian Binotto (CM) d Andrew Bradley 6-1. McDowell 20-19. Binotto never trailed thanks to an early 4-0 advantage.

220 — Alex Campbell (CM) p Luke DeHart 1:50. Canon-McMillan 25-20. The Big Macs’ second pin in 110 seconds have them back in the lead.

285 — Cody Klempay (CM) d Scott Augustine 4-0. Canon-McMillan 28-20. Klempay’s shutout gives the Big Macs their biggest advantage.

106 — Brendon Price (CM) d Benji Yates 7-0. Canon-McMillan 31-20. Canon-McMillan completes a 26-0 season by clinching its first-ever PIAA AAA championship.

113 — Dalton Macri (CM) md Coleman Cousins 25-15. Canon-McMillan 35, McDowell 20.

113 — Brandon Kelley (WV) d George McGuire 4-3. LeBoeuf 6-3. Kelley won a back-and-forth match on a takedown with 44 seconds left.

120 — Justin Haley (WV) d Adam Borgia 3-2. 6-6. Haley scored all his points in the third period.

126 — Brandon Puckly (FL) tf Ryan Force 17-0 4:44. LeBoeuf 11-6. Puckly posted three near falls en route to two team bonus points.

132 — Ryan Hart (WV) d Brad Malinowski 2-0. LeBoeuf 11-9. The lone offense was Hart’s two-leg takedown at the edge of the circle with 1:12 left.

138 — Timothy Kuntz (WV) d Riley Smith 1-0. Wyalusing Valley 12-11. The Rams win another defensive match on Kuntz’s early escape point.

145 — Kody Pace (FL) md Joe Champluvier 13-4. LeBoeuf 15-12. Pace scored on three-point moves early and late against the Rams’ bloodied middleweight.

152 — Tyler Fenton (WV) d Taylor Harrington 2-1. 15-15. Harrington was on the cusp of victory when Fenton got a two-leg takedown at the circle’s edge with 3 seconds left.

160 — Taylor Fox (FL) d Tyler Thompson 8-2. LeBoeuf 18-15. Two last-minute takedowns insured Fox’s victory.

170 — Craig Cihon (FL) p Daniel Frankenfield 2:16. LeBoeuf 24-15. Cihon converts an open-air cradle to give the Bison their biggest lead.

182 — Vince Pastine (FL) d Justin Griffith 4-3. LeBoeuf 27-15. Pastine’s reversal with 1:34 left was the difference.

195 — Anthony Clark (WV) p Gage Salusky 2:18. LeBoeuf 27-21. Clark’s pin keeps the Rams in contention.

220 — Evan Daley (FL) md Dylan Otis 10-0. LeBoeuf 31-21. Daley’s shutout clinches the dual and a Bison consolation semifinal berth against District 5 champion Bedford at 11 a.m. Bedford also sports a Bison nickname.

285 — Clayton Force (WV) by forfeit. LeBoeuf 31-27.

113 pounds — Ryan Easter (B) d George McGuire 2-0 OT. Bedford 3-0. Easter got his takedown with 2 seconds left  in the extra minute.

120 — Garrett Thomas (B) d Adam Borgia 3-0. Bedford 6-0. Thomas made his second period near fall hold up for the match’s total offense.

126 — Brandon Puckly (FL) d Toby Brett 6-0. Bedford 6-3. A severe nosebleed was the biggest problem en route to Puckly’s shutout.

132 — Brad Malinowski (FL) md Caleb Grimes 8-0. LeBoeuf 7-6. The dual’s shutout run continues, as Malinowski gives the D-10 Bison their first lead.

138 — Riley Smith (FL) p Zach Dudek 2:45. LeBoeuf 13-6. Smith led 11-0 at the time of his right-leg cradle fall of Dudek.

145 — Jack Middleton (FL) p Jesse Martin 1:50. LeBoeuf 19-6. Consecutive right-leg cradle falls give the D-10 Bison a 13-point lead.

152 — Kody Pace (FL) p Devin Clark 2:16. LeBoeuf 25-6. The run of falls continue for the D-10 Bison.

160 — Taylor Harrington (FL) d Josiah Koontz 10-4. LeBoeuf 28-6. Koontz avoids a shutout loss, but that’s the only good news for the D-5 Bison.

170 — Craig Cihon (FL) p Dylan Evans :22. LeBoeuf 37-6. Cihon clinches the victory for the D-10 Bison, who will compete for the PIAA AA third-place trophy at 1 p.m.

182 — Mike Brett (B) by forfeit. LeBoeuf 37-12.

195 — Jacob Krupa (B) by forfeit. LeBoeuf 37-18.

220 — Justin Easter (B) by forfeit. LeBoeuf 37-24.
