Erie Times-News Breakout Male Track Athlete of the Week: Ryan Smathers, North East

Ryan Smathers

If his times in the Erie County Classic are any indication, Ryan Smathers seems primed to defend his District 10 titles in the 800 meters and 1,600 meters.

Smathers, a junior, set County Classic records in both events Friday, winning the 800 in 1 minute, 57.87 seconds and the 1,600 in 4:19.91. Both times were improvements on his first-place marks of 1:58.76 and 4:28.12 from the 2011 District 10 Class AA meet.

Smathers enters Saturday’s District 10 meet as the top seed in both events, with a 1:56.80 in the 800 and 4:17.23 in the 1,600.

Smathers also has enjoyed great success on the state level. He placed fifth in 2011 and second in 2010 at the PIAA cross country meet, and he placed second in the 1,600 at the 2011 PIAA Class AA track and field championships.
