Corner Kick – Iroquois

Iroquois Braves
Boys
Coach (season, record): Dan Vavreck (4th season, 7-41-3)
2011 overall record: 2-14-0
2011 region record (place): 2-6-0 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Matteo Petrone, Dylan Miles, Dalton Zebrak, Paul Fries, Cody Burkett
Top returning players: Damien Khoo, Brandon Siebauer
Assistant coaches: Sean Bartlett, Dave Zebrak
Outlook: Iroquois could be starting over this season after massive graduation losses and coming off a two-win season in 2011. The Braves graduated Matteo Petrone, Dylan Miles, Dalton Zebrak, Paul Fries and Cody Burkett in the spring. Petrone was an all-region first-team selection on offense, while Burkett (offense) and Zebrak (defense) were voted to the second team. Damien Khoo and Brandon Siebauer return this season to lead a young and inexperienced Iroquois team. The Braves have a tough schedule lined up outside of the region and will have to take on Fairview, Mercyhurst Prep and North East inside the region. Iroquois need to worry about building the program up and winning matches after that.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Don Ferri (14th season, 149-107-9)
2011 overall record: 10-5-4
2011 region record (place): 3-0-1 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Lost to Wilmington 3-2 in the District 10 Class A championship.
Top players lost: Makenzie Morgan, Jasmin Khoo
Top returning players: Morgan Stetson, Alex Breski, Courtney Herget, Courtney Mentley, Kara Wozniak, Mikayla Cagnoli, Abbi Young
Assistant coach: Jake Beyers
Outlook: Iroquois is coming off back-to-back region championships and appearances in District 10′s first Class A title matches. The road back to the D-10 championship could be much tougher for the Braves this season. With the addition of the spring girls soccer teams into the west, Class A was filled with Class AA teams dropping down. Iroquois’ first priority will be replacing Makenzie Morgan and Jasmin Khoo, two big losses to graduation. Morgan was named to the all-district team on defense last year and was voted to the all-region team and the Region 3 Player of the Year. Khoo was an all-region pick on offense after scoring 10 goals. Despite two big losses, the Braves have an experienced team back. Courtney Herget and Alex Breski are coming off all-region seasons on offense. Herget led Iroquois with 13 goals and collected five assists, while Breski had six goals and two assists. Also back are Morgan Stetson (goalkeeper), Courtney Mentley (fullback), Kara Wozniak (fullback), Mikayla Cagnoli (midfield) and Abbi Young (forward). The returning group provides a contender in Region 3 but depth might be an issue this season. Brooke Argeny, Lena Donnolley, Lexi Blankenship and Asilin Shannon are incoming players that could add to that depth. The Braves’ biggest challenge this year could be Fairview. The Tigers come in with high expectations and could knock Iroquois off the top of Region 3. The Braves will need some big-time contributions from their underclassmen to return to the District 10 Class A championship.
