Outlook: Villa Maria could go through a rebuilding season. At least for the first half of the year. The Victors were decimated by graduation and transfers in the offseason. Villa lost seven seniors, including Kaitlyn Kissell, Kim Maasz, Jillian Blaszczyk, Alexus Edinger and Maddy Reichel. Kissell holds school records in career goals (129), season goals (41) and single-match goals (6). She was voted to the all-state team, to the all-district etam and the Region 5 Player of the Year along with the all-region first team. Maasz, Blaszczyk and Edinger were all-region first-team selections, while Reichel was voted to the second team. Those losses would be enough to cripple most powerhouses, but added in three transfers and three players pursuing other sports and the Victors will be hurting this year. Abby Kenski, an all-region first-team selection, left for McDowell, while second-team Kathryn Strobel transferred to Strong Vincent. Kaylee Philbrick moved to Nebraska, leaving the Victors with a young and inexperienced team.
Seniors Courtney Edwards, Alexis Monocello and Melissa Blenner return. Edwards is a second-team midfielder, while Monocello is a midfielder and Blenner is a standout on defense. Also back are juniors Eileen Burger (all-region second team), Taylor Jones and Allie Trocki along with sophomores Morgan Putnam and Emily Schwabenbauer. Putnam was Villa’s second-leading scorer as a freshman. The Victors will look to underclassmen to fill in some holes, including freshmen Julia Lorei, Elizabeth Patsy, Taylor McMahon, Emily Grochowski and Emma Shimek. Villa’s schedule doesn’t do the Victors any favors. The first three matches are against District 10 powerhouses McDowell, Harbor Creek and Mercyhurst Prep. The Victors should be much better in the second half after developing as a team but they need to take care of their region opponents, aside from Mercyhurst, to make sure the season doesn’t get away from them.
