District 10 reports erroneous classification changes; Conneaut still AAA

Conneaut Area High School’s classifications in football, golf and softball will remain as they were to start the school year, contrary to a report in Thursday’s Erie Times-News.

District 10 secretary Pete Iacino on Wednesday provided the Erie Times-News by e-mail with classification changes in the three sports at the school. He later confirmed the changes, including new enrollment figures of 297 boys and 253 girls.

District 10 later discovered that Conneaut’s classification status was incorrectly interpreted and that the PIAA classifications will not change.

Conneaut – the result of the merger this year of Conneaut Lake, Linesville and Conneaut Valley high schools – had to be classified either as a new school or a merged school. If Conneaut were a new school, it would have been able use the post-consolidation enrollment figures it submitted to the PIAA in the spring.

However, Conneaut has been classified as a merged school and must use enrollment figures from October 2011.
“Conneaut is not a new school but a merger of former member schools, and it had to do with confusing enrollment policy information,” District 10 chairman Wally Blucas said today of the error in the information it provided. “The District 10 Committee has been dealing with this for the better part of the year. I will take responsibility for some of it, but you can only deal with what you get. Everybody is in too big of a hurry and likes to jump on honest mistakes, or alleged mistakes, as it turns out when the dust settles.”

Conneaut remains a Class AAA team in football, boys golf and softball for the current PIAA two-year cycle. The Eagles could change classifications starting in the 2014-15 school year.
