Weigh-in: Greenville and Meadville

Greenville

Coach (season/record): John Reynolds (10th/143-42)

2011-12 overall record: 21-3

2011-12 region record: 9-0

Top wrestlers lost: Cody Copeland, Tyler Landfried, Randy Perkins, Tyler Gentile

Top wrestlers returning: Jase Paxton, Joey Safner, Derek Watt, Jacob Brown, Jacob Riffe, Blake Horne, Justin Reynolds, Braden Gladysz.

Assistant coaches: Brian Holzshu, Kevin Kean, Chris Cox, Dave Cornelius, Brent Beckstein

Outlook: The Trojans experienced heavy graduation losses — Copeland, Landfried and Perkins all were state place-winners — from a team that won its region and posted a fifth-place team finish at the PIAA individual tournament. But Reynolds said Greenville actually has more depth than in recent seasons and has plenty of quality wrestlers back, including Gladysz, a returning Section 3 champ at 285, and section runners-up Paxton, Safner, Riffe and Justin Reynolds.

Meadville

Coach (season/record): Barry Anderson (5th/NA)

2011-12 overall record: 9-11

2011-12 region record: 4-6

Top wrestlers lost: Zach Towers, Jimmy Shields.

Top wrestlers returning: Aaron Ehrgott, Zach Luben.

Assistant coaches: Jeff Longstreth, Terry Tidball

Outlook: Towers was sixth at last year’s PIAA tournament at 170 and is now wrestling at Edinboro University, and he and Shields were the Bulldogs’ top two wrestlers last season. With their departures, Meadville enters the season with only one senior on a junior-heavy roster led by Ehrgott, who was fourth at last year’s D-10 tournament at 106 pounds. Anderson says the program has made strides and has enough depth to fill every weight class for the second straight season. The lower levels continue to deliver talent, with former PJW state qualifier Kyle Luben due to arrive this season, probably at 132 pounds. Along with several experienced returnees, Anderson said the bulldogs will have an influx of first-year wrestlers.
