Fall Fastbreak – Oil City

Oil City Oilers
Boys
Coach (season): Mark Cochran (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 6-16
2011-12 region record (place): 3-13 (eighth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Nate Davis, Jeff Zimoski, Blake Hadley, Steve McCauley, Dan Yarnell
Top returning players: Andrew Williams, Logan Way, Evan Carll, Hunter French
Assistant coaches: Keith Fulmer, Nick Woods, Chris Delmonaco
Outlook: Oil City will look to go in a new direction with a new head coach in Mark Cochran. The Oilers struggled last season in a brutal region and will need to buy into a new system to find some success this year. Oil City graduated Nate Davis, Jeff Zimoski, Blake Hadley, Steve McCauley and Dan Yarnell. All five were contributors last season and leave big holes to fill. The Oilers return Andrew Williams, Logan Way, Evan Carll and Hunter French. Williams and Way started last year while Carll and French could step into starting roles this winter. Devon Geib, Cullen Flaherty, Frank Serbati and Calib Coburn are young players who could also step into playing time this year on the varsity level. Oil City is athletic, hardworking and has strong guard play but size and rebounding could be huge issues along with inexperience. The Oilers are in one of the toughest regions in District 10 and they will need to come together quickly to not only survive region play but to make strides and win some games.

Assistant coaches: Autumn Witt, Sam Knight, Jessica Warner, John Davis, Jodi Gault, Katie Wenner
Outlook: Oil City improved last winter after winning only one game two years ago. The Oilers starting buying into coach Paul Flickner’s system and started to see some results. Oil City will need to replace all-region second team selection Chelsea Hall. She graduated in the spring after leading the Oilers in 3-pointers last year. Oil City returns starters in Weslee Clyde, Carlee Wenner, Stephanie Stevenson, Erin Wilfong and Riley Davis along with contributors Michaela Bernecky, Miranda Williams, Kayleigh Serafin, Susan Parson and Shani Kulling. The Oilers could also receive contributions from younger players Jen Stevenson, Sarah McCauley, Lena Carll and Lexi Scannell. Oil City has plenty of experience this year and has improved at both ends of the floor. The Oilers have to cut down on turnovers and make smarter decisions. Oil City is in a tough region with Franklin and Hickory and confidence will be key. The Oilers could run into some tough nights but if they use their experience and chemistry, they could be in the conversation for a playoff spot.
