Key plays from the Lakeview-West Middlesex five-overtime thriller

The West Middlesex-Lakeview District 10 Class AA boys basketball championship was epic on Friday night. The Big Reds pulled out a 71-65 win in five overtimes to win the D-10 title. Gannon recruit Matthew Dogan finished with 36 points for Middlesex, while Trey Staunch had 16 points and 13 rebounds and Jeremy Jancso added 12 points. Dalton Boggs led Lakeview with 25 points followed by 16 points by Casey Greggs and 10 points and 10 rebounds for Coty Gander.

Here’s a look at some of the key plays during the game:
3:29 left in regulation – Dogan hits two free throws to tie the game up at 46-46.
3 seconds left in regulation – Jerrod Palmer just misses a 3 for Middlesex. Game goes to overtime tied 46-46.
2:00 left in first overtime – Dogan connects on a layup to tie the game up 48-48.
3 seconds left in first overtime – Boggs misses a 3 and sends the game to a second overtime tied 48-48.
2:04 left in second overtime – Palmer hits 1-of-2 from the free throw line to tie the game at 53-53. Neither team gets a shot for the rest of overtime.
7 seconds left in third overtime – Greggs hits a 3-pointer to tie the game up at 59-59 and force a fourth overtime.
3:02 left in fourth overtime – Boggs scores on a layup to tie the game up at 61-61.
4 seconds left in fourth overtime – Boggs misses a layup and forces a fifth overtime tied 61-61.
1:27 left in fifth overtime – Staunch hits two free throws to give Middlesex a 67-61 lead.
26 seconds left in fifth overtime – Dogan hits two free throws to give Middlesex a 71-65 lead.

    How can you lose when you get to the foul line 37 times and your opponent shoots only 11 times? That’s the second poorly officiated game I’ve seen in the AA D-10 playoffs this year. The WM vs Fairview game was just as bad: 18 of 30 vs 2 of 2 for Fairview. I hope the PIAA is looking.

    Agreed. It seems the start get all the calls. Dogan is the big namer and will get all the calls. Especially in the fairview game which was essentially a home game for WM.
