Winter Warm-up – Rocky Grove

Rocky Grove Orioles
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Bill Wilson (5th season, 17-48)
2012 overall record: 6-10
2012 region record (place): 2-4 (third)
2012 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top player lost: Trevor Guthrie
Top returning players: Breck Schneider, Robbie Adams, Scott Murray
Assistant coach: Blayne Gold
Outlook: Rocky Grove is looking to take full advantage of the transition in Class A. With the final four teams in last year’s District 10 playoffs gone, the Orioles are in position to make a play for the D-10 title. Rocky Grove lost one starter in Trevor Guthrie but returns everyone else. Breck Schneider, Robbie Adams and Scott Murray are back this spring to lead the Orioles. Murray is an all-region third baseman and Adams is an all-region outfielder. Schneider is also a big contributor back this season after hitting .540 last year. Freshmen Colt Schneider and Nate White are new players to the varsity level that could contribute right away for the Orioles. Rocky Grove had a tough time hanging on to leads and scoring enough runs to pull out wins last year which will be the main focuses this spring. Class A is up for grabs and the Orioles should be right in the thick of the playoff race as well as the Region 1 title race.

Softball
Coach (season): Carrie Armburger (3rd season)
2012 overall record: 11-5
2012 region record (place): 8-4 (fourth)
2012 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Shelby Latshaw, Nichole Bell, Katie Bell, Eden Rembold, Carly Boughner
Top returning players: Bria Bevier, Lily Rembold, Tasha Lepley, Chelsea Garris, Jillian Shull
Assistant coaches: Susan Keith, Shelby Latshaw
Outlook: Rocky Grove will have a bit of a new look this season after losing five starters to graduation. Shelby Latshaw, Nichole Bell, Katie Bell, Eden Rembold and Carly Boughner are gone and will be tough to replace. Rembold was an all-region first-team outfielder, while Boughner was a first-team designated player. Latshaw could be the toughest loss as a first-team pitcher and region pitcher of the year. The Orioles will have several experienced players back to lead a young team. Bria Bevier, Lily Rembold, Tasha Lepley, Chelsea Garris and Jillian Shull return for Rocky Grove. Lily Rembold was voted to the all-region first team as an outfielder last year and Bevier is a second-team first baseman. The Orioles will need to develop a strong pitching staff to replace Latshaw and replace her as a leadoff hitter. The Orioles are in a new region and earning a playoff spot will be tough, but Rocky Grove has become a confident program that could do some damage this spring.
