Ward, Burns defend their D-10 tennis titles

Seniors Nicholas Ward of Cathedral Prep and Shane Burns of Warren became back-to-back District 10 tennis titlists after Monday’s championship matches at Pennbriar Athletic Club.

Ward repeated as the Class AAA winner when he held off teammate Michal Prenovitz for a competitive 7-5, 7-6 (7-3) victory. He’ll next face District 3 second seed Darren Mast of Conestoga Valley in the first round of the PIAA tournament.

Burns prevented Fairview freshman Ben Westcott from claiming the district’s Class AA title as a qualifier. The Dragons’ top-seeded standout wore down Westcott, who won six matches just to reach Monday’s final, en route to a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Burns will open against Wyomissing’s Ricardo Saad, the District 3 victor, when the state meet runs May 24-25 at Hershey. Saad was a PIAA finalist in 2012.
