Save-An-Eye officials look for help with anniversary book

The Erie Lions Club and a group of volunteers are teaming up in an attempt to commemorate the 75th anniversary Save-An-Eye All-Star Football Game, which will take place July 26 at Veterans Stadium.

With that in mind, they have undertaken an ambitious project: publishing a coffee-table book that will recount the game’s history and include many photos from the all-star games.

The Lions Club and volunteers are seeking help from the public, former players and their families. A list of every player who competed in the game from 1939-2012 will be published in the book.

Former players and their families are urged to scan a list of players on the Save-An-Eye website at and check names, schools and years to make sure they’re accurate. If a detail is wrong, the public is encouraged to use the contact form on the website to send corrections by May 20. No changes will be made without a written request, and all changes will be verified.

Meanwhile, the Lions Club is seeking memorabilia such as photographs, game jerseys, ticket stubs, programs and news clippings. The deadline for the memorabilia is Monday. Photos will be scanned and returned. The volunteers also are seeking to interview players and family members, especially those from earlier games.

Anyone with information, memorabilia or questions should call the Erie Lions Club at the Sight Center of Northwest Pennsylvania at 455-0995, Ext. 121. Ask for Linda Hackshaw, the chair of the book committee.

An hour-long video of highlights also has been produced for the occasion. Check out some excerpts from the video:
