Millcreek wins Region 8 Legion title when Wilcox forfeits

The Millcreek Post 773 baseball team claimed the American Legion Region 8 Tournament title today when its scheduled opponent, Wilcox, did not show up for the title game.

Millcreek and Wilcox had been scheduled to play in the championship game today at 11 a.m. at Northwestern High School in Albion.

“We were there and we went through infield (practice), but the other team didn’t show up,” Millcreek coach Tom Hansen said.

The eight-team tournament started Saturday, and the schedule had been disrupted several times by rain.

Millcreek beat Wilcox 5-2 earlier Wednesday and then beat French Creek Valley 12-2.

Hansen said that Wilcox team officials had indicated Wednesday night that they did not plan to play today. He added that Wilcox coaches wanted to play the title game late Wednesday, but Millcreek already had played twice during the day.

“According to Legion rules, you can’t play more than twice in one day,” Hansen said.

Millcreek and Wilcox each had one loss in the tournament going into today’s final.

Millcreek advances to next week’s state tournament in Boyertown. For more on the Region 8 tournament, see Friday’s Erie Times-News.
