Jump Serve – Iroquois

Iroquois Braves
Coach: Robert Englert (2nd season, 11-7)
2012 overall record: 11-7
2012 region record: 9-5 (third)
2012 playoff results: Lost to Corry in five games in a District 10 Class AA play-in match.
Top players lost: Hannah Tombaugh, Jenny Johnson
Top returning players: Shelby Olson, Kaitlyn Grimm
Assistant coach: Sarah Ragen
Outlook: Iroquois was able to fight its way to the District 10 playoffs last season before losing a heartbreaker to Corry. The Braves had success under new head coach Robert Englert last year and they are looking for more this season. Iroquois lost two all-region players to graduation in the spring. Hannah Tombaugh was voted to the all-region first team as a setter and was a big-time leader for the Braves, while libero Jenny Johnson was voted to the all-region second team. Iroquois has some experience back in outside hitters Shelby Olson and Kaitlynn Grimm. The two could step into leadership roles this season as the Braves look for help from the younger players. The two seniors are joined by returning starters Ashley Benovic at right side hitter and junior Emily Martin at middle hitter. Iroquois entered camp looking for middle hitter help and a new player to step up as a libero. The Braves are in a region loaded with Class AA powerhouses and continuing to grow as a program won’t be easy. Iroquois has the talent in place to compete and if the Braves can build chemistry and plug some holes in camp, they will be a tough team to beat in region play.
