McLane opens tennis season sans Spahalic

General McLane, minus Adina Spahalic, was victorious as the last District 10 girls tennis program to start its 2013 season.

McLane swept Warren in the teams’ singles matches for Tuesday’s 3-2 victory at Betts Park. The best-of-five meet also served as the Lancers’ Region 2 opener, and dropped the Dragons to 2-3 and 0-3.

Logan Welch started at No. 1 singles for McLane, which saw Spahalic become the district’s 2012 Class AA titlist with that role. Spahalic was an exchange student who returned to Bosnia.

Welch, who won the girls’ age 16 singles title at the 2013 City Rec Junior Tournament, swept Warren’s Cassie Johnson 6-2, 6-4 on Tuesday. Linsey Sipple and Kayla Eeg were the other victors for the Lancers, who host the undefeated Mercyhurst Prep Lakers today at 4 p.m.
