Fall Fastbreak – Cochranton

Cochranton Cardinals
Boys
Coach: Scott McCurdy (2nd season, 15-10)
2012-13 overall record: 15-10
2012-13 region record: 9-3 (tied for second)
2012-13 playoff results: Defeated Eisenhower 52-34 in the District 10 Class AA semifinals before losing to Kennedy Catholic 58-37 in the championship. Cochranton then lost to Clairton 76-48 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Andy Saunier, Nate Roche
Top returning players: Nick Dickson, Logan Herzberger, Garrett Adams
Assistant coaches: Mark Roche, Bobby Stauffer, Blair McCurdy, Ryan Hart
Outlook: Cochranton had a solid year under new head coach Scott McCurdy last winter. The Cardinals made their way to the District 10 Class A championship game last year and earned a spot in the PIAA playoffs. Cochranton will have to overcome the graduation of Andy Saunier and Nate Roche. The Cardinals have a strong group back, including Nick Dickson, Logan Herzberger and Garrett Adams. Dickson is a senior guard that led the Cardinals in scoring and rebounding last year on his way to a spot on the all-region first team. Herzberger is another senior guard that made the all-region first team after leading Cochranton in assists and steals. Adams is a senior forward that was having a big junior season before an injury ended it early. The Cardinals could also receive big contributions from the lower levels in junior Nate Wigton. Cochranton has all five starters back, including Alex Custead and Josh Vanderhoof, giving the Cardinals plenty of experience and weapons this year. Cochranton battled through last year to finish second in the region and make a solid playoff run. If the Cardinals can continue to develop this season, they are a serious District 10 Class A threat and are primed for another trip to the state playoffs.
