Outlook: Harbor Creek is looking to go in a new direction for the first time in decades. Dan Budziszewski’s job as head coach was opened up in the offseason and the Harbor Creek School Board approved longtime McDowell coach Ned Bailey to take over. It will be Bailey’s first stint as a varsity head coach. Bailey’s first task will be to plug in some holes left by graduation. Malique Mitchell, Dylan Squires, Rick Hoenes, Casey Krotoszynski, Jake Phillips and Matt Newara are all gone, leaving some big shoes to fill at the skill positions. Krotoszynski was the Huskies’ third-leading rusher with 230 yards and one touchdown on 74 carries, while Phillips was the starting quarterback. Phillips ran for 238 yards on 89 carries and threw for 526 yards and one touchdown. Mitchell was voted to the all-region first team as a wide receiver with 23 catches for 250 yards, while Squires had 11 catches for 154 yards.

The Huskies will start over with a new coach and new system but they have several talented players coming back. Silas Bretz, Alex Locco-Nielsen, Nick Harayda, Christian Loeffler, Drake Heyer, Dan Decker, Jake Raymond, Nick Manna and Carter Catrabone are back to lead a young Harbor Creek team. Bretz led the Huskies in rushing last fall with 67 carries for 376 yards and four touchdowns. Harayda was the backup quarterback and looks to step up and start this season. He threw for 145 yards and two touchdowns as the backup and he ran for 83 yards. Locco-Nielsen had eight catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns and could step up as an offensive weapon with Mitchell and Squires gone. Loeffler could compete for playing time at quarterback, while Heyer and Decker are back on the offensive and defensive lines. Raymond and Hanna are candidates to run the ball, and Catrabone is a returning wide receiver.

The Huskies could also receive a surge from the lower levels as juniors Gabe Mattson, Tony DeDionisio, Eric Metz and Noah Weber as well as sophomore Sam Wilczynski could make an immediate impact. Harbor Creek will get some time to build chemistry at home with three straight games at Paul J. Weitz stadium to start the season, including the “battle for the bridge” against Iroquois in Week 1. The Huskies have several tough region games on the road at Fairview, Northwestern and Girard. Harbor Creek is in a complete rebuild mode this season, but the Huskies could be successful if they buy into a new system. Harbor Creek’s success will come down to how quickly they come together as a team and build confidence in each other to win big games this year.
