Check back throughout the day for updates from all District 10 athletes competing in the PIAA track and field championships in Shippensburg.

Update No. 6
Also in Class AAA girls high jump, Warren’s Sabrina Anderson took 12th by clearing 5-2.

District 10 did not have a qualifier in the girls 100. In Class AA, Shamieia Roberts (Villa Maria) ran a 13.09 and Eve Gardner (Union City) ran a 13.11 to just miss qualifying for the semifinals. The last spot went to 12.92 seconds.

In the boys 100, Clay Allen ran an 11.22 to reach the semifinals. Hickory’s DeShawn Coleman false-started in his heat. Sheffield’s Khalil Slaughter had a blazing time of 10.88 seconds to win his heat easily. Grove City’s Erik Record had a time of 11.26 seconds to miss qualifying in AAA. The final qualifying time is 11.21 seconds.

Update No. 5
Sharon leaper Johnathon Jacoway grabs third in the Class AA triple jump with a distance of 45 feet, 53/4 inches. Kyle McKeen of Northwestern just missed a medal. He takes ninth at 43-101/2. Jared Myers (Greenwood) had the same distance but took eighth through tiebreakers.

District 10 has a solid showing at the Class AAA girls high jump. Franklin freshman Abby Jones and Meadville’s Paige Kassab clear 5-6. Neither could get over 5-7, however, which Taylor Morgan of Upper Dublin did to win the state championship. Jones takes an impressive second and Kassab was excited to finish third.

District 10 picks up a qualifier in the 100 girls hurdles. Grove City’s Eliza Lowe finishes the race in 15.21 seconds and moves on to Saturday’s semifinals. Class AA did not go as well. Sophie Mazza (Harbor Creek) ran a 16.37 and Kristen Belko (Hickory) ran a 16.67. The final qualifying time was 16.15.

In the Class AA 110 hurdles, Mercer sprinter Jarred Davis ran a 16.19 and Austin Mirizio (West Middlesex) had a time of 16.36. Neither qualified as the last qualifying time was 15.78 seconds. Class AAA didn’t have a qualifier either. Greg Miaczynski of Central Tech and Jesse Ragon (Oil City) ran times of 15.52 and 15.62 seconds, respectively. The final qualifying time for the semifinals was 15.36.

Update No. 4
The heat is really picking up here and affecting the runners. Sad thing is, the sun isn’t really out yet.

Corbett’s final distance in the shot put was 39 feet. She was kicking herself because her D-10 championship throw of 40-113/4 would have placed third today. Williamsport’s Rachel Fatherly had a huge throw of 46 feet, 91/4 inches to win the event.

Oil City’s Jarred Hollidge finishes in 20th place in the Class AAA discus. He maxed out at 139 feet, 4 inches.

Update No. 3
Corbett takes eighth in the shot put. We are waiting on results.

District 10 did not have a qualifier in either 3,200 girls relay. Mercyhurst Prep finished with a time of 9:56.44 right behind Slippery Rock at 9:54.53 in the Class AA race. Oley Valley was the final qualifier at 9:52.35 In Class AAA, Grove City ran a 10:04.16 but the final qualifying time was 9:34.68.

The 3,200 boys relays had more success. Greenville (8:07.99), Titusville (8:08.59) and Lakeview (8:13.90) all qualified in the Class AA race. Mercyhurst Prep ran an 8:22.35 to miss the final spot by less than 10 seconds (8:13.90).

Grove City ran the Class AAA race in 8:31.37 but the final qualifying time was 7:59.88.

Update No. 2
District 10 has its first medalist of the day. Alexis King of Wilmington takes third in the Class AA long jump. She reached 17 feet, 91/4 inches. Mariah Burns (Wilmington) just missed a medal by taking ninth at 16-101/4. Hickory teammates Allyssa McClure (16-3) and Lauren Lubarski (16-1) took 14th and 19th, respectively.

Corry’s Jaynee Corbett will medal in the shot put as she made the finals.

Running qualifiers will be coming soon. Some technical problems with the PIAA have delayed results.

Update No. 1
The PIAA championships have started as the runners will spend today qualifying for Saturday’s championship events. The PIAA, however, will crown 14 field event champions today. In the first session, District 10 has 15 competitors, including second-seeded Alexis King of Wilmington in the long jump and No. 2 seed Rebekah Petty (Greenville) in the pole vault. I will post results from every D-10 athlete throughout the day.

As McDowell junior Anna Chodubski enters the PIAA track and field championships today, she’s already a seasoned veteran of state competition. At the 2011 PIAA championships, Chodubski placed third in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet 1⁄2 inch.

This weekend in Shippensburg, she’ll look to add a second state medal in the long jump and another in the triple jump.

Chodubski qualified for the state meet in both events May 16 by winning the long jump and placing second in the triple jump at the District 10 championships at Harbor Creek’s Weitz Stadium.

She repeated as long jump champion with a leap of 17-6. She narrowly missed her second straight D-10 gold medal in the triple jump with a second-place effort of 37-4 1⁄2.

No matter what happens this weekend, McDowell will be happy to have Chodubski back for a final season next year.

De’Vion Tate seems to be getting only better as his high school career draws to a close.

The McDowell jumping standout punctuated his senior season with a pair of titles at the District 10 Class AAA championships May 16 at Harbor Creek’s Weitz Stadium. He jumped 22 feet in the long jump to edge his close friend, Cathedral Prep junior Joe Oduho, the 2011 D-10 champion. That was a season best for Tate.

Tate also won the triple jump with a personal-record 45-7. He enters the PIAA championships today seeded 23nd in the long jump and 14th in the triple jump. He placed eighth in the long jump in 2011.

He already turned in a strong effort at the state indoor championships this winter when he placed third in the long jump with a personal-best 22-7 and took eighth in the triple jump with a solid 44-3.

If he keeps improving, he could add at least one more state medal, if not two, to his collection.

Villa Maria still had not clinched a spot in the District 10 lacrosse championships last week when the Victors faced the Fairview girls.

Thanks to Makenzie Agresti’s late goal, the Victors pulled out a 9-8 victory and advanced to Saturday’s District 10 title game against McDowell. The Trojans won that game 11-6, but Villa’s young team showed that it could have a bright future.

Some of the Victors’ youthful talent showed against Fairview. Agresti, a sophomore, scored with 1 minute, 12 seconds left in the game to put Villa ahead for good and lift the Victors to their fourth win of the season.

With Agresti and plenty of other underclassmen set to return next season, Villa hopes to go at least one step further with a D-10 championship game win.

The PIAA Board of Directors passed a motion 29-2 to bring the basketball state championship games back to the Hershey Giant Center beginning this winter for the next four years. The championships had been played at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center since 2006. Penn State is trying to secure an NCAA women’s basketball regional and those dates would conflict with the PIAA championships in two of the next four years.

This weekend marks the 10-year anniversary of Sheena Gordon’s double-record performance at the 2002 PIAA Class AAA championships. The McDowell great set state records in the high jump and triple jump. Both records still stand.

Check out this recent Varsity Letter featuring Gordon and other Erie County track and field stars.

In addition to Gordon, several former District 10 athletes still own PIAA track and field records. Here’s a list of D-10 athletes’ state records in events that are currently being contested at the PIAA meet: (Records from defunct events are not listed.)

Class AAA girls high jump: Sheena Gordon, McDowell (2002) 5-11

Class AAA girls triple jump: Sheena Gordon, McDowell (2002) 42-10 1/4

Class AAA girls long jump: Nicole Smith, McDowell (2005) 20-3

Class AA girls javelin: Fawn Miller, Lakeview (2008) 167-2.

Class AA boys 100-meter dash: Jeff Brown, Grove City (1979) 10.58

Class AA boys 300-meter hurdles: Tom Wise, Grove City (1992) 37.47

Class AA boys high jump: Matt Benson, Sheffield (1992) 7-1

Class AA boys pole vault: Eric Sparks, Hickory (2005) 15-10

Class AA boys discus: Brian Milne, Fort LeBoeuf (1991) 206-3

No District 10 boys hold Class AAA records in current PIAA events.

• Click below for more notes on District 10 athletes heading into this weekend’s PIAA track and field championships in Shippensburg.

• Fairview senior Andrea Miller’s performance in the District 10 Class AA 1,600 meters was overshadowed by the effort of Hickory standout Morgan Richards. Richards set the meet record in the event with a time of 5 minutes, 3.35 seconds and she claimed the No. 3 seed in this week’s PIAA meet.

Miller, however, had a fine race herself. She finished in 5:16.12 to place second in the D-10 meet for the second straight year. She is seeded ninth in the PIAA in the 1,600 after placing 14th in the event at the 2011 state meet.

Miller has had a strong senior season that included a personal-best 5:15.70 in her first-place effort at the McDowell Invitational.

• Richards and Miller will race against one of the state’s elite athletes in Homer Center senior Angel Piccirillo. She is the two-time defending champion in the PIAA Class AA 1,600 and enters the meet after running a personal-best 4:48.28 in the District 6 championships.

Piccirillo also is a two-time indoor mile state champion, a two-time state cross country champion and a two-time Penn Relays champion. She’s one of the rare athletes whom everyone stops to watch — athletes and fans alike — at each meet she runs.

She’s also seeded first in the 800 meters at 2:12.48.

• Two more overlooked performances came from Erie County runners in the Class AA boys 1,600. Iroquois senior Dalton Zebrak placed second in 4:27.00 and Fairview’s Connor Gregory placed third in 4:31.01. Zebrak earned a No. 11 seed at states, while Gregory took the No. 16 seed.

Zebrak showed his talents at the prestigious Baldwin Invitational on May 4 when he finished first among a 1,600-meter field of 88 runners with a personal-best time of 4:20.71. If Zebrak repeats that performance this weekend, he’ll be a contender for a top medal.

• Seneca senior pole vaulter Rebecca Kosack has improved throughout her career, and Kosack’s persistence and steady improvement will be rewarded with an appearance at the PIAA meet this weekend.

She tied her own school record Saturday when she cleared 10 feet 6 inches to finish second behind Greenville’s record-setting Rebekah Petty (12-0).

Kosack placed eighth at 9-3 in the D-10 meet as a sophomore and took fourth in D-10 at 9-6 as a junior.

• Union City sophomore Eve Gardner qualified for the state meet by winning the 200 meters at the D-10 championships with a time of 26.03 seconds. After the meet, Gardner qualified for the PIAA championships in a second event.

Greenville’s Rebekah Petty won the D-10 Class AA 100 meters but chose to scratch in the event for the state meet. As a result, Gardner moved up to second place from third and gained a PIAA berth.

Gardner is seeded 13th in the 200 and 18th in the 100 (12.81).

• District 10 is loaded in the Class AA girls field events. Out of the seven events, D-10 athletes are seeded No. 1 in three, No. 2 in five and No. 3 in three and No. 4 in three. That’s a lot of medal contenders for one district.

Our previous Varsity blog notebook documented the Hickory girls’ prowess in the field events. But other D-10 schools are well-represented among those high seeds as well.

For instance, North East’s Alexandra Schriefer (5-4) and Laurel Shickler (5-2) are seeded second and third, respectively, in the high jump. Wilmington’s Alexis King (18-0 1/2) is second and teammate Mariah Burns (17-10) is third in the long jump. Greenville’s Petty (12-0) is second in the pole vault, and Slippery Rock’s Emily Campbell (39-4 1/2) is fourth in the shot put.

How dominant are D-10′s Class AA girls in the throwing events? Consider this: Eight D-10 girls advanced to the PIAA meet in the shot put and seven more qualified in the discus.

– from staff reports

The two-day PIAA track and field championships open Friday in Shippensburg.

Many District 10 athletes will compete, and a good number are highly seeded. Here’s a link to a post featuring the PIAA performance lists and heat sheets.

Click below for a look at the prospects of some D-10 athletes at the state meet:

District 10 athletes enter this weekend’s PIAA track and field championships in Shippensburg seeded No. 1 in eight events.

North East’s Ryan Smathers, the Hickory girls and Wilmington’s John Yohman lead the way.

Smathers, a junior, is one of just two District 10 top seeds in running events among all four classes. He’s No. 1 in the Class AA 1,600 meters with a time of 4 minutes, 14.74 seconds. Smathers placed second in the state in the 1,600 in 2011.

Meanwhile, West Middlesex junior Clay Allen is seeded No. 1 in the Class AA 100 meters (10.78). Several other D-10 runners are ranked among the top five in an event.

• Hickory girls are seeded No. 1 in three field events, and the Hornettes have two No. 2 seeds and two No. 3s as well.

Hickory’s Corrin Regginello earned the top seed with her high jump of 5 feet 4 inches. Regginello will go for Hickory’s second consecutive state championships in the event after teammate Lauren Lubarski won the Class AA title in 2011. Lubarski did not clear a height in the D-10 meet Saturday, so she will not defend her title this weekend.

Incidentally, D-10 dominates the PIAA Class AA girls high jump seedings. North East’s Alexandra Schriefer (No. 2, 5-4) and Laurel Shickler (No. 3, 5-2), Greenville’s Linda Roldan (No. 6, 5-2) and Lakeview’s Courtney King (No. 8, 5-2) all are seeded among the top eight. (The PIAA does not list ties among seeds; when ties occur, the PIAA lists performers according to their finish at districts.)

Although Lubarski didn’t advance in the high jump, the Hickory senior should be a top contender in two other events. She is seeded No. 1 in the discus with a throw of 142 feet 3 inches, and she’s seeded No. 3 in the javelin with a 147-9.

Rounding out Hickory’s top seed is Jennifer Neider in the shot put with a distance of 45-4½. Teammate Taylor Woods is the No. 2 seed in both the shot put (41-8 ½) and discus (141-5).

• Meanwhile, among Class AA boys, Wilmington’s Yohman claimed No. 1 seeds in the shot put (60-3 ¾) and discus (171-11). Don’t overlook Hickory’s Matt Bell, who ranks No. 2 in the shot put (60-3) and No. 4 in the discus (155-9).

• How good is PIAA Class AAA in the 3,200 relay? Grove City’s time of 8:00.51 would be tied for Class AA’s No. 1 seed with Christopher Dock. In Class AAA, the Eagles’ time is good for No. 16 in the field.

• Mercyhurst Prep’s David Benczkowski has a chance to win a state medal in a relay for the second time this year. Benczkowski, more known for his swimming talents, was a member of the Lakers’ fourth-place 200-yard medley relay at the PIAA Class AA swimming and diving championships in March. He also placed second in the 100 backstroke.

Now, he will look to add a 3,200 relay medal to his collection Saturday.

• Benczkowski isn’t the only standout Mercyhurst swimmer who will go for a track and field medal this weekend. Senior Catherine Stark is a distance specialist in the pool and on the track.

She is a four-time District 10 champion in the 500-yard freestyle for the Mercyhurst swim team. She also qualified for the state track meet in the 3,200 meters and the 3,200 relay this weekend.

During the winter, Stark was a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that won a silver medal at the state swim meet. She also was a member of the fourth-place 200 medley relay team.

Stark finished third in the 3,200 run (12:04.50) at Saturday’s District 10 Class AA meet, but second-place Jessica Bennett of Slippery Rock will not compete in the 3,200 at states. That allowed Stark to move up one spot and gain the state berth.
