Fall Fastbreak – Conneaut Valley

Conneaut Valley Indians
Boys
Coach (season, record): Bob Leupold (7th season, 69-50)
2010-11 overall record: 21-2
2010-11 region record (place): 8-0 (champion)
2010-11 playoff results: Lost 68-56 to West Middlesex in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Casey Baker, Sam Smith
Top returning players: Nolan Varee, Sid Smith, Todd Lash
Assistant coaches: Phil Smith, Justin Smith
Outlook: There is some uncertainty in Conneaut Valley this winter as speculation grows about consolidation. The combining of schools may go beyond football into basketball and all sports. If so, this would be the last season for the Indians. Valley lost one of its best players in school history in Casey Baker to graduation along with Sam Smith. Valley dominated last winter to collect 21 wins with its only regular-season loss to Class AA Seneca. The Indians were upset in the first round of the playoffs and will use their experience to try and return to the postseason. Returning for Valley is second-team all-region selection Nolan Varee along with Sid Smith and Todd Lash. The trio saw plenty of playing time last season and will be counted on to lead an inexperienced Indians team. Valley could be the favorite to win their region once again but will have some work to do if they want to make a run in the D-10 Class A playoffs.

2010-11 playoff results: Lost 49-40 to Farrell in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals.
Top player lost: Leah Griffin
Top returning players: Emily Steigerwald, Rachel Hazen, Kristen Baker, Sarah Frawley
Outlook: Conneaut Valley made its way to the postseason last winter before running into a red-hot Farrell team. The Indians didn’t lose many players to graduation and could be back in the running once again. Emily Steigerwald returns as an all-region first-team selection along with up-and-coming sophomore Kristen Baker. Baker was impressive her freshman year and is emerging as a solid player. Rachel Hazen and Sarah Frawley are also back to provide leadership and experience for the young Indians.
