Winter Warm-up – Central Tech

Central Tech Falcons
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Rich Kolash (4th season, 11-38)
2011 overall record: 4-11
2011 region record (place): 2-6 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Andrew Quiggle, J.J. Vanderhoof, Buddy Skrutsky
Top returning players: Jacob Trott, Brian Kelly, Breyton Graves, Nick Sobina
Assistant coaches: Adam Snider, Dan Henry, Stephan LeBron
Outlook: Central Tech is still working on rebuilding the program. It won’t get any easier next spring as the Falcons move up to Class AAAA. Central lost three key players to graduation in Andrew Quiggle, J.J. Vanderhoof and Buddy Skrutsky. Quiggle was a first-team all-region pick at utility, while being named to the second team at pitcher. Vanderhoof (third base) and Skrutsky (outfield) also made the second team.

The Falcons have a solid group back this spring, led by Jacob Trott, Brian Kelly, Breyton Graves and Nick Sobina. Trott has the returning batting average and on-base percentage from last year, while Kelly is the top returning player in hits and RBIs. Graves is a junior lefty that saw time on the mound last year and will likely become the ace of the staff, while Sobina brings plenty of speed. Michael Somoles is back after missing last year. He started his freshman and sophomore seasons in the outfield and could immediately impact the middle of the lineup. Chad Kauffman (pitcher), Jared Heitzenrater (outfield), Eddy Lopez (outfield), Paul Kafando (utility), James Rowe (outfield), Alejandro Rosado (utility), Ryan Kosezgi (first base) and Trent Heitzenrater (third base) could all be impact players on the varsity level as well.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Nick DeSantis (5th season, 15-60)
2011 overall record: 2-14
2011 region record (place): 2-14 (eighth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top player lost: Erica Wilkinson
Top returning players: Ericka Hansen, Alyssa Boden, Andy Griffith, Jaimie Lunger, Abby Potter, Kayla Gerbracht
Assistant coaches: Bryan Lewis, Mike Prenatt, Jess Corum
Outlook: Central will have an experienced team back this spring but will need to make big strides to compete in a brutal region. The Falcons lost Eric Wilkinson to graduation but returns eight regulars. Junior Ericka Hansen along with seniors Kayla Gerbracht, Jaimie Lunger and Abby Potter will be the focus of Central’s offense. Alyssa Boden is back to take the mound after a solid freshman season, while Andy Griffith is also a top returning player. The Falcons will need some help from the lower levels to fill out their depth. Kelsey Prenatt, Taylor Lamb-Kutz, Jaida Dixon and Alexis Spizarny could be impact players right away this season. Central won’t have much time to ease into the season with a home opener against McDowell before taking on Mercyhurst Prep and Strong Vincent. The first three games of the season should be a measuring stick right away for the Falcons.
