Corry Beavers
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Mike Daniels (9th season, 98-61)
2011 overall record: 11-8
2011 region record (place): 6-4 (tied for second)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Franklin 7-3 and lost to Grove City 7-3 in the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Aaron Cressley, Cory Owens, Adam Zimmerman
Top returning players: Levi Berkhous, Tyler Engle, Curtis Burkhart
Assistant coaches: Eric Brumagin, Josh Daniels
Outlook: Corry will have a young team this season with the loss of Aaron Cressley, Cory Owens and Adam Zimmerman to graduation. The Beavers have some experience back in Levi Burkhous, Tyler Engle and Curtis Burkhart. With only two projected senior starters, Corry will need several underclassmen to step up this season. Some of those underclassmen could include Dylan Silvis, Bailey Patton, Patrick Brown, Brody Wood, Zach Shopene and Evan Melnichek. Cressley and Zimmerman graduating is a huge hit to the Corry pitching staff, meaning the defense behind the Beavers’ young pitchers will be important. With seven of the nine starting positions open, coach Daniels is anticipating healthy competition through practices to earn spots. Corry has plenty of athletes but their ability to play together early in the season is one of several unknowns for the Beavers this spring.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Steve Skalos (3rd season, 53-7)
2011 overall record: 15-3
2011 region record (place): 15-1 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Lost 2-0 to Warren in the District 10 Class AAA championship.
Top players lost: Jaushlynne Anderson, Meghan Carney, Cierra Howell, Shelby Liller, Alex Puckly, Shana Merkle
Top returning players: Cara Baker, Allison Williams, Hannah Kondrlik, Brittany Zajac, Ericka Gillihan, Sara Beth Weber, Shaina Hansen, Morgan Woodin
Assistant coaches: Tara Kaczmarek, Tiffany Depaul
Outlook: Corry will have a new look on the mound for the first time in years. Alex Puckly graduated leaving Allison Williams to file in that role. Jaushlynne Anderson, Meghan Carney, Cierra Howell, Shelby Liller and Shana Merkle also graduated, leaving some big holes and big leadership roles to fill. Cara Baker (catcher) and Hannah Kondrlik (second base) are back to provide power in the lineup and lead the younger players along with Brittany Zajac (first base), Ericka Gillihan (outfield), Sara Beth Weber (outfield), Shaina Hansen (third base) and Morgan Woodin (outfield). Gillihan could step in as the leader of the outfield. Corry has been in some battles with Warren over the years but with the emergence of Fort LeBoeuf, Region 6 could be an interesting battle this season. The Beavers open the season at home with DuBois before taking on Mercyhurst Prep. Corry then goes on the road for two big region games at Fort LeBoeuf and McDowell. One date to keep an eye on is May 17. If Corry and Warren are one game apart for the region title, that game – Warren’s senior day – could decide the region title and the top seed in the D-10 playoffs.
