Winter Warm-up – Girard

Girard YellowJackets
Baseball
Coach (season): Craig Miller (1st season)
2011 overall record: 2-14
2011 region record (place): 0-10 (sixth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Not available
Top returning players: Carl Lewis, Tucker Ochalek, Kendall Bonnett, Anthony Monico, Colin Gregory
Assistant coaches: Jeff Delfuoco, Doug Tomlinson
Outlook: Girard will be under new direction this season as Craig Miller comes over from Northwestern. Miller spent the past 10 years as an assistant coach for the Wildcats and is hoping to make his mark as a head coach this spring. The Girard didn’t lose much to graduation and has a solid group returning. Carl Lewis, Tucker Ochalek, Kendall Bonnett, Anthony Monico and Colin Gregory have plenty of experience, while Jesse Friend, Chris Webber and Jordan Friend are looking to make an impact on the varsity level. Miller is looking for the YellowJackets to get back to fundamentals and to improve their pitching staff. Girard is in a tough region with perennial Class AAA contenders but establishing the program is the most important thing for the ‘Jackets this spring.

Softball
Coach (season, record): Chico Mason (4th season, 25-32)
2011 overall record: 11-7
2011 region record (place): 11-7 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Hannah Johnston, Sara Hatton, Ally McDonald, Aubree Fails
Top returning players: McKenzie Fails, Harlie Bolt, Julia Hatton, Shannon Allen, Rachel McDonald, Jess Fails
Assistant coaches: Bill McNally, Stacie Lagace, John Hatton, Dale McDonald
Outlook: Girard lost four seniors that provided plenty of production at the plate. Hannah Johnston, Sara Hatton, Ally McDonald and Aubree Fails are gone with some huge holes to fill for coach Chico Mason. Girard returns several talented players, including Harlie Bolt, Julia Hatton, Shannon Allen, Rachel McDonald, Jess Fails and pitcher McKenzie Fails. McKenzie Fails had a solid sophomore season on the mound and could emerge as one of the top pitchers in the region. Bolt missed last season with an injury after making the all-region team as a freshman. The YellowJackets’ primary needs are at centerfield, catcher and second base this spring. McKenzie Bonnett, Kalea Poland, Caitlin Wurst, Katelyn Ghastin, Rachael Cooper, Brynn Dennington, Rylie Bolt, Kaitlyn Wilczynski and Colleen Metzler are all younger players that are looking to make an impact on the varsity level.
