Brent Benedict

After an outstanding freshman season with Corry, Brent Benedict just keeps getting better.

Benedict burst onto the scene during the 2011-12 season with a superb series of performances that culminated in District 10 Class AA gold and silver medals, in addition to pair of PIAA medals.

This year, Benedict has gotten only better as his times have taken a dive. He did not win a District 10 title over the weekend, but he turned in two strong efforts while placing second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 100 backstroke. In the fly, Benedict actually improved on the meet record of 52.99 that he set in 2012. He touched in 51.44 Friday but finished behind Fairview’s Robert Sikatzki (51.13). In the 100 back, Benedict had a solid 52.09, more than a second faster than his 2012 time.

He is seeded fourth in both events for next week’s PIAA championships, so he has a chance to snare two more state medals.

Hannah Feucht

Hannah Feucht finally got her coveted District 10 individual swimming title after several near misses.

The North East junior, who owned five school records coming into the season, broke through with a gold medal in the 100-yard backstroke Saturday at the D-10 Class AA championships at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center. Feucht finished with a strong time of 58.81 seconds while shaving more than a second off her seed mark.

On Friday, she placed second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.49, trailing only the 24.01 of Mercyhurst Prep’s Rylee Klomp.

Now that she has her first District 10 title, Feucht will aim for her first PIAA medal next week during her third trip to the state championships at Bucknell University.

If the PIAA seeds are any indication, Feucht has a good shot at a top-eight finish that would garner a medal. She is seeded sixth in the backstroke and ninth in the 50 free. She just missed a medal in two events in 2012.
