Andrew Welton

Central Tech senior Andrew Welton left his mark on the school’s wrestling program this season.

Welton put together an amazing postseason run in Class AAA to finish as the PIAA 285-pound runner-up. He started the postseason with his second District 10 Class AAA championship before an outstanding performance at the Northwest regional in Altoona.

Welton had a first-period throw that led to a pin in both the semifinals and championship of the region tournament.

He capped his final season with a spot in the championship match in Hershey to be the first Central Tech medalist in the past 20 years.

The winter season is just about over as Andrew Welton of Central Tech won the final wrestling poll of the year. Lakeview’s Coty Gander won the boys basketball poll and North East’s Danielle Barnes won the girls poll. There will be a combined basketball poll next week to conclude the year and one more poll for boys and girls swimming after the state championships.

Coty Gander, Lakeview – Finished with 10 points and hit several big free throws in a 44-40 win over Quaker Valley.
Trey Staunch, West Middlesex – Scored 24 points in a thrilling 55-50 overtime win against Jeannette.
Matt Harris, Cathedral Prep – Scored 17 points, all in the first half, to lead the Ramblers to a 79-54 win over Seneca Valley.
Alex Borges, Mercyhurst Prep – Had 15 points and 14 rebounds in a 56-46 win over Brockway.
Kendall Bonnett, Girard – Connected on a crucial free throw with five seconds left to help the YellowJackets upset Mars 66-62.
Jaymon Mason, General McLane – Had another huge effort with 32 points in a 67-42 win over Thomas Jefferson.
Malquan Pullium, Strong Vincent – Scored 22 points in a 71-54 loss to Chartiers Valley.
Logan Herzberger, Cochranton – Had 18 points in a 76-48 loss to Clairton.
Chris James, Kennedy Catholic – Scored 13 points in a 54-45 loss to Lincoln Park.

Girls basketball
Courtney Sargent, Kennedy Catholic – Scored 14 points to help the Golden Eagles hold off North Catholic 45-36.
Holly Grober, Hickory – Finished with 13 points in a 71-44 loss to South Park.
Tenasia Law, Franklin – Scored 16 points in a 66-46 win over Ligonier Valley.
Karlee McBride, Villa Maria – Had 18 points in a tough 45-28 loss to Hopewell.
Abby Clulow, Cochranton - Scored 11 points in a 67-43 loss to Serra Catholic.
McKenzie Popatak, Sharpsville – Finished with 20 points in a 38-32 win over Brookville.
Danielle Barnes, North East – Came off the bench to provide some big minutes with several starters in foul trouble in a 59-49 win over McGuffey.

Marissa Molnar, McDowell – Bombed away with three 3-pointers on her way to 11 points in a 50-49 loss to Gateway.

Wrestling
Andrew Welton, Central Tech – Made school history by making the PIAA Class AAA championship match and walking away with a silver medal.
Jake Gromacki, Cathedral Prep – Picked up a fourth-place medal at the PIAA Class AAA championships.
Tyree Spearman, McDowell – Finished in fifth place at the PIAA Class AAA championships.
Ossie Bowers, General McLane – Finished with an eighth-place medal at the PIAA Class AAA championships.
Devin Brown, Saegertown – Picked up a pin in overtime to win the PIAA Class AA 106-pound championship.
Austin Matthews, Reynolds – Earned his fourth state medal and won the PIAA Class AA 152-pound championship.
Michael Bonner, Sharon – Picked up a third-place medal at the PIAA Class AA championships.
Taylor Fox, Fort LeBoeuf - Earned a fourth-place medal at the PIAA Class AA championships.
Cam Cyphert, Cochranton – Took home a third-place medal at the PIAA Class AA championships.
Tim Vargo, Union City – Won in overtime to earn fifth place at the PIAA Class AA championships.

Sam Breese

Lakeview wrestler Sam Breese came up with a big performance when he needed it the most. The junior won the 285-pound class at the Class AA northwest regional in Sharon to earn a spot in the PIAA championship tournament in Hershey. Breese picked up an impressive pin of Union City’s Jeff Burger in 1 minute, 49 seconds to win a loaded bracket.

He continued his dominance this weekend at the PIAA meet, winning three straight matches to earn a spot in today’s Class AA title match. He earned a trip to the finals by pinning Bethlehem Catholic’s Andrew Dunn 4 minutes, 34 seconds. He will face Port Allegany’s Nicholas Budd (36-1) in the finals.

Lakeview standout Casey Greggs won the boys basketball poll, while North East’s Alex Artise won the girls poll. Brent Benedict (Corry) and Hannah Feucht (North East) won the swimming polls. Feucht edged Wilmington’s Lauren Barber by one vote. Lakeview’s Sam Breese won the wrestling poll.

Hailey Wilwohl, McDowell – Had 12 points in a 49-26 win over Central Tech in the D-10 Class AAAA championship.
Courtney Sargent, Kennedy Catholic - Scored 14 points in a 67-45 win over Cochranton in the D-10 Class A championship.
Alex Artise, North East – Continued her impressive career with six points and strong defensive play in a 38-36 win over General McLane in the D-10 Class AA championship. She also had 15 points in a 42-38 win over Sharpsville in the semifinals.
McKenzie Popatak, Sharpsville – Scored 30 points in a 48-29 win over Mercer in the D-10 Class AA third-place game.
Hayley Andres, Franklin – Drained a free throw with no time on the clock to give the Knights a 48-47 win over Villa Maria in the D-10 Class AAA championship.
Holly Grober, Hickory – Scored 18 points and was big in the paint in a 50-43 win over Mercyhurst Prep in the D-10 Class AAA third-place game.
Morghan Egli, Cochranton – Had six points and seven blocks in the fourth quarter and had an assist on the game-winning layup in a 47-46 win over Farrell. Egli finished with 10 points, 19 rebounds and 12 blocks.
Michelle Jahn, General McLane – Scored 13 points in a 56-42 win over Mercer in the D-10 Class AA semifinals.
Shanice Morris, Villa Maria - Played a huge role in the Victors’ 49-37 win over Hickory. Morris scored 11 points and was a presence in the paint.

Boys swimming/diving
Robert Sikatzki, Fairview - Dominated at the D-10 Class AA championship meet. He started Friday by swimming in the winning 200 medley relay before setting a record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.13 seconds. He then set a pool and meet record in the 100 backstroke at 50.04 seconds.
Brent Benedict, Corry - Swam a record time in the 100 butterfly.
Phil Emerson, Franklin – Set a meet record in the 50 free with a time of 50.91 seconds. He also set a meet and pool record in the 100 free with a time of 45.90 seconds and swam on the record-breaking 400 free relay, which had a time of 3:15.55.
Rex Riley, Cathedral Prep – Started the D-10 Class AAA championships by winning the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.29. He then had a meet and pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 57.56 seconds.
Jonathan Ekas, McDowell – Set a meet and pool record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.18 seconds.

Girls swimming/diving
Stephanie Loesch, Fairview – Started the D-10 Class AA championships with two titles on Friday. The sophomore swam for the winning 200 medley relay before winning the 200 IM.
Lauren Barber, Wilmington – Set a meet and pool record in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.46. She also had a meet and pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:03.80.
Rylee Klomp, Mercyhurst Prep – Earned her third D-10 championship in the 50 free with a time of 24.01 seconds. She then won her fourth D-10 title in the 100 free with a time of 52.37 seconds and was part of the winning 400 free relay team.
Mylinda Hartnett, Meadville – Won two D-10 Class AAA championships.
Hannah Feucht, North East - Won the 100 backstroke D-10 Class AA championship by a full two seconds.

Wrestling
Jake Gromacki, Cathedral Prep - Picked up an 8-3 decision in the title match to win the 113-pound regional title.
Tyree Spearman, McDowell – Won a close 3-2 match in the championship of the 160-pound regional.
Tyler Vath, Saegertown – Continued his impressive season with the 120-pound regional title.
Jarray Norris, Sharon - Picked up the 126-pound championship at the regionals.
Austin Matthews, Reynolds – Dominated in the 152-pound class of the regional.
Tim Vargo, Union City – Earned a pin in the championship of the 170-pound class at the northwest regional.
Ryan Morris, Corry – Won the 195-pound class of the northwest regional.
Cam Cyphert, Cochranton – Picked up a big win in the championship of the 220-pound class of the northwest regional.
Sam Breese, Lakeview – Won the 285-pound class of the northwest regional.

Trevor Beiter

Seneca wrestler Trevor Beiter is putting together one last impressive  playoff run with the Bobcats. Beiter avenged one of his two losses this season by pinning Corry’s Ryan Morris in the 195-pound final of the District 10 Class AA championships last week.

Beiter was dominant throughout section wrestling and the D-10 tournament, as well, including an 11-0 major decision in the D-10 semifinals.

Beiter entered the region tournament this weekend as the No. 1 seed with a 26-2 record and earned a trip to the state tounrament with a third-place finish. He will be one of two Bobcats who will make the trip to Hershey this week, along with 132-poundr Adam Fish.

Matt Wheeler

Northwestern wrestler Matt Wheeler is having an outstanding junior season.

Wheeler capped the first postseason weekend of individual wrestling with the Section 3 championship at 120 pounds.

His 6-2 decision in the championship match moved his record to 27-2 this season and Wheeler entered this weekend’s District 10 Class AA championship tournament as one of the top seeds in his weight class. He received a first-round bye for winning the section and is automatically in the quarterfinals. During the section tournament, he picked up a 59-second pin in the semifinals to wrestle for the title.

Nason McCall of Girard won the boys basketball poll, while Karissa Cratty of Youngsville won the girls basketball poll. Northwestern standout Matt Wheeler won the wrestling poll, while Adam Hamilton (Harbor Creek) won the boys swimming and diver Lexi Cadden of Iroquois won the girls poll.
