Fairview’s cheerleading squad made the most of Saturday’s District 10 girls competitive spirit championships.

Not only did the Tigers host the historic event, but won the district’s small-school division title with an average of 79.50 team points from a three-judge panel. Fairview’s average was the highest of the eight squads that competed.

McDowell (large-school division winner); Oil City (large-school wild card); Harbor Creek (medium-school division winner); Mercyhurst Prep (medium-school wild card); Warren (small-school wild card); and Wilmington (small-school wild card) were the other district programs that advabced to the first-ever PIAA meet, scheduled Feb. 2 at Hersheypark Arena.

Rah-rah will take on a whole new meaning in the winter of 2013.

The PIAA in December approved competitive cheer as a championship sport starting in 2012-13. Teams will meet the Saturday before the team wrestling championships to crown the state’s first titlist.
