Wilmington Greyhounds
Boys
Coach (season): Christian Davoli (6th season)
2011 overall record: 8-10-0
2011 region record (place): 5-3-0 (third)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Harrison Sturm, Jared Kaufman
Top returning players: Jon Clark, Marc Delio, Hunter Taylor, Andrew Sciuto, Derek Nichols
Assistant coach: Nathan Hunter
Outlook: Wilmington moved up to Class AA in the offseason but coach Christian Davoli believes the Greyhounds put enough work in during the offseason to compete. Wilmington’s biggest challenge this season will be its depth at several positions. The ‘Hounds graduated goalkeeper Jared Kaufman and all-region sweeper Harrison Sturm. Among the players returning are seniors Marc Delio, Jon Clark and Hunter Taylor. Delio, a midfielder, is being looked at by several Division 2 and 3 schools, while Clark scored 20 goals as a forward last year. Taylor is back to anchor the defense along with sophomore Andrew Sciuto. Derek Nichols will step into the starting role at keeper this season. He joined the varsity team last year and was Kaufman’s backup. Wilmington has plenty of new players to the program this season and developing depth and experience will be key as the season goes on.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Ben Bailey (16th season, 184-93-11)
2011 overall record: 15-4-1
2011 region record (place): 6-0-0 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Iroquois 3-2 to win the District 10 Class A championship. Wilmington then lost to Shady Side Academy 1-0 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Mariah Burns, Kaillie Marshall, Mackenzie Hiers, Raechel Pusateri, Alanna Elliott
Top returning players: Kyle Lum, Rachael Huff, Grace Gealy, Anna Hartwell, Sarah Slonaker, Anna Miller, Jillian Mickle
Assistant coach: Tim Shelenberger
Outlook: Wilmington rolled to its second straight District 10 Class A championship last fall but will need to reload quickly to repeat that success. The Greyhounds lost Mariah Burns, Kaillie Marshall, Mackenzie Hiers and Raechel Pusateri to graduation. Burns and Hiers were voted to the all-region first team on offense, while Marshall was a first-team defender and was named to the all-district team. Alanna Elliott was voted to the second team on offense as a sophomore but has decided to switch over to tennis this season. The Greyhounds return Kyle Lum, Rachael Huff, Grace Gealy, Anna Hartwell, Sarah Slonaker, Anna Miller and Jillian Mickle. Lum was voted to the first team on offense and the region player of the year as a sophomore. Mickel and Slonaker were first-team defenders last fall. Wilmington brings back a solid group but will need to reload several positions with new players. The ‘Hounds’ success could depend on how quickly they can build chemistry with new starters and develop depth.

West Middlesex Big Reds
Boys
Coach (season): Mike Mann (1st season)
2011 overall record: 0-16-0
2011 region record (place): 0-8-0 (fifth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: None
Top returning players: Stuart Lewis, Sebastian Grasso, Tyler Burke, Brandon Ballard
Outlook: West Middlesex is looking to secure its first win in program history after a winless start in 2011. The Big Reds didn’t lose anyone from last year and will bring some experience back this fall. Middlesex will also have to get used to a new system after Mike Mann was hired as the new head coach. Stuart Lewis, Sebastian Grasso, Tyler Burke and Brandon Ballard return to provide senior leadership along with juniors Ethan Thompson, C.J. Mazur, J.D. Elsey, Chris Mastrianno, Chase Williams, Joe Canfaro, Eric David, Dylan DeSilvey and Alex Parrish. The Big Reds are searching for their first win but once they achieve that, the confidence should continue to grow each season as the program becomes stronger.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Mike Williams (2nd season, 0-14-2)
2011 overall record: 0-14-2
2011 region record (place): 0-5-1 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Brittany Ruffo, Amanda Bowers
Top returning players: Kayla Ballard, Sarah Mild, Sara Buchanan, Emily Burns, Shae Romain, Angie Sochor, Mackenzie Thompson
Assistant coaches: Lisa Kwolek, Tony Zigo
Outlook: The West Middlesex girls did gain some success in the program’s first season. The Big Reds were able to collect two ties and started competing in the second half of the season. Middlesex will have to replace Brittany Ruffo and Amanda Bowers, who graduated. Ruffo was an all-region second-team defender as a senior. The Big Reds have a strong group back, including all-region second-team picks Kayla Ballard (junior) and Sarah Mild (senior). The two turned into leaders for Middlesex and could be some of Region 1′s top players this fall. Also back are senior letter winners Sara Buchanan, Emily Burns, Shae Romain, Angie Sochor and Mackenzie Thompson. Coach Mike Williams noticed plenty of strides being made last season despite it being the first year of the program. The Big Reds are searching for their first win but goals are higher than that this season. With the influx of so many Class A teams into District 10 this season, the playoffs could be opened to four teams, giving several squads an opportunity to play in the postseason.

Coach (season, record): Tom Harrington (3rd season, 35-5-0)
2011 overall record: 18-1-0
2011 region record (place): 10-0-0 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Lost to North East 1-0 on penalty kicks in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Dan Maeder, Ed Dorunda, Brad Simmons, Christian Harrington, Sean Roney, Tyler Madigan
Top returning players: Shane Burns, Liam Boger, Matt Sandberg, Tyler Mealy, Joseph Bell, Quinn Boger
Assistant coach: Eric Bill
Outlook: Warren was rolling through opponents last season before running into a scrappy North East team in the District 10 Class AA playoffs. The Dragons will need big contributions from new players to return to the playoffs. Warren was hammered by graduation, including the loss of Dan Maeder, Ed Dorunda, Brad Simmons, Christian Harrington, Sean Roney and Tyler Madigan. Maeder was voted to the all-region first team at goalkeeper, while Dorunda and Harrington were first-team selections on offense. Harrington was also voted the region player of the year and named to the all-district team after scoring 25 goals and dishing out 46 assists. Dorunda led the Dragons with 36 goals and had 15 assists in 2011. Madigan is another offensive weapon gone to graduation after making the second team as a senior. Simmons (first team) and Roney (second) are all-region defenders gone as well. The Dragons have some experience back to lead a young team. Shane Burns was voted to the first team on defense and provides senior leadership along with second-team selections on offense Liam Boger and Matt Sandberg. Boger had 20 goals and 12 assists last year and Sandberg had 27 goals with 14 assists. Warren also has junior Tyler Mealy, a second-team defender, back this fall. Joseph Bell and Quinn Boger started as freshmen last season and are emerging as standout players for Warren. Nathan Sandberg, Hunter Mohney, Bryce Bauer and Tristan Boger could be impact players this season.

Coach (season): Bob Domville (6th season)
2011 overall record: 5-11-2
2011 region record (place): 3-4-1 (third)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Kaitlyn Levesque, Emily Ashbaugh, Taylor Stanz
Top returning players: Jaimie Eaton, Reid Yarzabek, Paige Rimer, Katie Ressler, Amanda Pinkerton
Assistant coach: John Lasher
Outlook: Warren might go through some growing pains this season after losing six starters to graduation. Among the players gone are all-region selections Kaitlyn Levesque, Emily Ashbaugh and Taylor Stanz. Levesque was voted to the all-region second team on offense, while Ashbaugh and Stanz were second-team defenders. The Dragons will turn to leaders Jaimie Easton, Reid Yarzabek, Paige Rimer, Katie Ressler and Amanda Pinkerton. Eaton and Yarzabek are back at midfield and Rimer and Ressler return on defense. Pinkerton is also back in goal to give the Dragons some much-needed experience. Warren won’t have an easy region schedule with powerhouses like Mercyhurst Prep and Villa Maria. The Dragons need several offensive players to stand up this year to keep up with some of District 10′s top teams.

Villa Maria Victors
Girls
Coach (season, record): Walt Federowicz (18th season, 275-77-14)
2011 overall record: 16-4-0
2011 region record (place): 7-1-0 (co-champion)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Titusville 9-0 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals before losing to Harbor Creek 3-1 in the semifinals.
Top players lost: Kaitlyn Kissell, Kim Maasz, Jillian Blaszczyk, Alexus Edinger, Maddy Reichel, Abby Kenski, Kathryn Strobel, Kaylee Philbrick
Top returning players: Courtney Edwards, Eileen Burger, Alexis Monicello, Melissa Blenner, Taylor Jones, Allie Trocki, Morgan Putnam, Emily Schwabenbauer
Assistant coaches: Narciso Burgos, Aaron Jones, Doug VanHoozer
Outlook: Villa Maria could go through a rebuilding season. At least for the first half of the year. The Victors were decimated by graduation and transfers in the offseason. Villa lost seven seniors, including Kaitlyn Kissell, Kim Maasz, Jillian Blaszczyk, Alexus Edinger and Maddy Reichel. Kissell holds school records in career goals (129), season goals (41) and single-match goals (6). She was voted to the all-state team, to the all-district etam and the Region 5 Player of the Year along with the all-region first team. Maasz, Blaszczyk and Edinger were all-region first-team selections, while Reichel was voted to the second team. Those losses would be enough to cripple most powerhouses, but added in three transfers and three players pursuing other sports and the Victors will be hurting this year. Abby Kenski, an all-region first-team selection, left for McDowell, while second-team Kathryn Strobel transferred to Strong Vincent. Kaylee Philbrick moved to Nebraska, leaving the Victors with a young and inexperienced team.

Seniors Courtney Edwards, Alexis Monocello and Melissa Blenner return. Edwards is a second-team midfielder, while Monocello is a midfielder and Blenner is a standout on defense. Also back are juniors Eileen Burger (all-region second team), Taylor Jones and Allie Trocki along with sophomores Morgan Putnam and Emily Schwabenbauer. Putnam was Villa’s second-leading scorer as a freshman. The Victors will look to underclassmen to fill in some holes, including freshmen Julia Lorei, Elizabeth Patsy, Taylor McMahon, Emily Grochowski and Emma Shimek. Villa’s schedule doesn’t do the Victors any favors. The first three matches are against District 10 powerhouses McDowell, Harbor Creek and Mercyhurst Prep. The Victors should be much better in the second half after developing as a team but they need to take care of their region opponents, aside from Mercyhurst, to make sure the season doesn’t get away from them.

Titusville Rockets
Boys
Coach (season, record): Mark Nesto (2nd season, 9-9-0)
2011 overall record: 9-9-0
2011 region record (place): 6-4-0 (third)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Alex Kennedy, Gene Berlin, Tyler Brown
Top returning players: Tom Feiereisen, Henry Kennedy, Aaron Marsh, Chris Hoffmeister, Mike Gionti, Josiah Leach, Derek Schneider, Ryan Schwab
Assistant coaches: K.C. Miller, Toby Cressman
Outlook: Titusville could be an interesting team this season. The Rockets were decent in 2011 but with a year of experience with coach Mark Nesto, Titusville has a veteran group back. The Rockets need to plug some holes left by Alex Kennedy, Gene Berlin and Tyler Brown. Kennedy was voted to the all-region first team on offense and Berlin to the second team. The Rockets return second-team defender Aaron Marsh to anchor the defense along with Derek Schneider and Chris Hoffmeister. Tom Feiereisen and Henry Kennedy will look to emerge as playmakes on offense, while Mike Gionti returns after missing last season with an injury. Ryan Schwab has developed into an impressive keeper and will be important to the Rockets’ success this fall. Titusville is a region that is primed for a team to step forward after Warren was hit hard by graduation. If the Rockets can develop their offense in camp and build some chemistry, they will be a team to keep an eye on.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Rick Shrout (7th season, 61-48-8)
2011 overall record: 10-5-4
2011 region record (place): 3-1-2 (second)
2011 playoff results: Lost to Villa Maria 9-0 in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Natilee Zdarko, Kari Sutton, Veronica Ditty, Brianne Come, Lindsey Downing
Top returning players: Faith Champion, Grace Champion, Haleigh Scott, Jennifer Kellogg
Assistant coach: Kim Wheeling
Outlook: Titusville has reached the District 10 playoffs the past four years but making it five in a row will be tough. The Rockets move to a talented Class AA region in the south and have some key positions to replace. Titusville lost three of its four midfielders and moved its fourth – Jennifer Kellogg – to defense. Kellogg was voted to the all-region second team as a junior last fall. The Rockets lost Natilee Zdarko, Kari Sutton, Veronica Ditty, Brianne Come and Lindsey Downing to graduation this past spring. Zdarko and Sutton made the all-region first team on offense, while Come was a first-team selection on defense. Downing also leaves a hole as a second-team goalkeeper gone to graduation. The Rockets have plenty of offensive firepower back in Faith Champion along with defenders Grace Champion and Haleigh Scott. Faith Champion already holds Titusville’s scoring records and is back after being named the region co-player of the year and a first-team pick. Grace Champion and Scott were voted to the first team on defense last fall. Lisa Harger and MacKenzie Foley will compete for the starting keeper job, while Shannon Moore could contribute on offense with Faith Champion. The Rockets need to fill in their needs at midfield and keeper successfully in order to compete with D-10′s top Class AA teams.
