YORK — Cathedral Prep played well, but Greater Latrobe was even better in the second round of the PIAA Golf Championships on Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Course.

The Ramblers, the defending state champions, shot 303, which was 10 shots better than Monday, but Latrobe recorded a 299 for a seven-stroke victory for the team championship.

The McDowell girls repeated their third-place finish of 2008, shooting 381 on Tuesday for a 748 total, 41 shots behind Shady Side Academy, which repeated as champions. Mount St. Joseph was second, a repeat of 2008.

McDowell junior Austin Romeo, tied for fourth at even-par 71 after Monday’s round, had no birdies and shot a 6-over-par 77 for a 148 total to tie for ninth.

McDowell sophomore Karlie Zabrosky, the lone District 10 representative, shot an 88 for a 171 total to tie for 19th.

Sophomore Garrett Browning of West Allegheny shot a 75 to go with a first-round 69 for a 2-over-par total of 144 to win the boys individual championship. Jackie Calamaro, a senior from Radnor, won the girls title with 74-76—150.

YORK — Defending champion Cathedral Prep trails Greater Latrobe by three strokes after the first round of play Monday in the PIAA Championships at Heritage Hills Resort.

The Ramblers, led by junior Mike Kloecker’s 5-over-par 76, totaled 313 in their bid to repeat as team champions.

McDowell junior Austin Romeo is tied for fourth in individual play with an even-par 71, two shots behind the leaders.

The McDowell girls team, which finished third in 2008, is third after the first round with a 367 total, 11 shots behind leader Greater Latrobe.

Sophomore Karlie Zabrosky led the Trojans with an 11-over-par 83, and is tied for 14th place in the individual competition.

Play concludes Tuesday with 18 holes.

The McDowell girls golf team has experienced plenty of success as exactly that.

The Trojans defended their District 10 team championship last Saturday at The Greens of Greenville. Karlie Zabrosky led the way with a low round of 81.

McDowell, though, hasn’t fared as well of late in the state’s individual tournament. The last time the Trojans advanced entries into that portion of PIAA play was 2001, when seniors Amy Natalie and Amanda Smith competed.

Zabrosky hopes to end that drought.

Only a sophomore, Zabrosky won Tuesday’s district girls tournament at rain-soaked Riverside Golf Course in Cambridge Springs. She needed three holes to survive a three-way playoff with North East’s Kelly Moylan and Hickory’s Olivia Landino.

Zabrosky, Moylan and Landino all shot regulation rounds of seven-over-par 79. The trio qualified for the Oct. 21 PIAA Western Regional, as did McDowell’s Colleen Miller (81).

Should Zabrosky qualify for the state individual tournament, she would be the first McDowell sophomore who played for the title.

Barring weather conditions, District 10′s boys golf entries should come into sharper focus over the next two days.

Thursday’s schedule includes a Region 2 team playoff between Meadville and Saegertown. The Crawford County rivals have a 1 p.m. tee time at Cambridge Springs’ Riverside Golf Club, with the winner earning a berth in the district tournament.

Also Thursday, Region 6 will hold a qualifier for the district’s individual tournament. Those golfers will vie for the postseason at Erie Golf Club at 2 p.m.

A Region 6 tiebreaker between Cathedral Prep and McDowell, postponed from Tuesday, was rescheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. The Ramblers and Trojans still will play for a district berth on the 18 holes of Lawrence Park Golf Club.

The district team tournament is scheduled for Oct. 10 at The Greens of Greenville, with the boys individual tournament Oct. 13 at Oak Tree Country Club in West Middlesex.
