Seton-La Salle's Sean Reiber waits for the penalty kick by Mercyhurst Prep's Tyler Shumaker with 30.7 seconds left in regulation. JARID A. BARRINGER/Erie Times-News

Although District 10 had only six soccer teams and four girls volleyball teams make the first round of the PIAA playoffs, seven are moving on to the PIAA quarterfinals. The Mercyhurst Prep and Harbor Creek boys soccer teams as well as the Hickory and Wilmington girls soccer teams won. In girls volleyball, Cochranton, Conneaut and Fort LeBoeuf won Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals. The most exciting win might have been the Mercyhurst Prep boys soccer team edging Seton-La Salle. With the match tied 2-2 and 30.7 seconds left, Alex Schroeck was fouled in the box, forcing a penalty kick. The Seton head coach and an assistant coach were ejected while arguing the call. Tyler Shumaker took the penalty kick and beat the keeper to score the game-winning goal. Click here for video of the goal and interviews with Shumaker, Shroeck and Mercyhurst Prep coach Doug Bakka. Mercyhurst Prep moves on to the quarterfinals Saturday against Sewickley Academy, which the Lakers already beat this season, 4-0. Mercyhurst is two wins from a trip to Hershey, which could get really interesting for the Lakers. On the other side of the bracket is District 1 champion New Hope-Solebury, which beat Mercyhurst Prep in the 2010 and 2011 PIAA Class A championships.

Harbor Creek players stand for the National Anthem before the start of their match against South Park. JARID A. BARRINGER/Erie Times-News

•Harbor Creek used a big defensive effort in the second half to hold off South Park 2-1. The Huskies are a perfect 21-0-0 and got their wish on Tuesday. Bedford beat South Fayette 4-2, giving Harbor Creek a rematch with Bedford on Saturday. Bedford beat Harbor Creek 1-0 in the PIAA quarterfinals last season. Dan Kuhn and Eric Campbell each scored a goal for the Huskies on Tuesday, while Zack Wainwright continued to be a stonewall in the net. Campbell now has seven of Harbor Creek’s 13 postseason goals.

•The Warren and McDowell boys soccer teams ran into buzzsaws on Tuesday. Neither team scored as the Dragons fell to West Allegheny 6-0 and the Trojans lost to Upper St. Clair 9-0. USC won the PIAA Class AAA state title last year and is on its way to contending for another title this fall.

•Both District 10 girls soccer teams are moving on with thrilling wins. Sara Suler scored to help Hickory knock off Moon 1-0. The Hornets will play Central Valley on Saturday. Hickory earned its first PIAA playoff win, while Wilmington also advanced to Saturday. Kyler Lum not only scored a late goal in the second half to tie the match with Sewickley Academy, she followed it with a goal in overtime to lift the Greyhounds. Wilmington will take on Greensburg Central Catholic.

•Fort LeBoeuf and Conneaut seem to be on a crash course to meet a second time in the PIAA Class AA semifinals. Fort LeBoeuf beat previously unbeaten Bradford in four sets, while Conneaut swept Knoch. Click here for video of Conneaut’s win at Cochranton High School. Fort LeBoeuf will take on Freeport and Conneaut will play Indiana on Saturday. If the Bison and Eagles both win, they will play each other in the PIAA semifinals Tuesday, likely back at Meadville High School.

•Cochranton girls volleyball is moving on with an easy sweep of Neshannock and will get powerhouse Clarion on Saturday. McDowell had its season come to an end with a hard-fought loss to Norwin.

District 10 had a big day on Saturday. Not only were two soccer and two girls volleyball champions crowned, District 10 picked up two state champions. Down in Hershey, the Mercyhurst Prep girls tennis duo of Brittany McBride and Katie Elia won the PIAA Class AA doubles title, while the Saegertown boys cross country team won the PIAA Class A team title. McBride and Elia took third last fall and picked up their third gold medals on Saturday with the doubles title. McBride and Elia were also part of the Mercyhurst Prep PIAA Class AA team champions in 2012 and this season as well. Saegertown had a terrific performance in Hershey to win the PIAA Class A team title. Morgan Schenberg finished in 14th place after finishing the race in 17 minutes, 1 second, while Brendon Barclay was 18th with a 17:05. Brad Amy (17:16) finished in 25th place followed by Matt Schenberg (17:35) in 37th, Wyatt Fleischer (17:42) in 48th, Garrett Johnston (18:38) in 112nd and Chris Guy (20:15) in 196th.

•District 10 volleyball fans packed Meadville High School twice on Saturday afternoon as the D-10 Class A and AA championships took place. Cochranton won the Class A title with a sweep of Cambridge Springs, while Conneaut battled to a three-game win over defending PIAA Class AA champion Fort LeBoeuf. The Bison had a 37-match winning streak snapped but they are still alive in the PIAA playoffs. Fort LeBoeuf will travel to DuBois to take on undefeated Bradford on Tuesday, while Conneaut plays Knoch. Click here for the complete PIAA first-round schedule with the remaining four boys soccer teams, two girls soccer teams and four girls volleyball teams left in District 10. There is plenty of video to check out from the two matches on Saturday, including highlights from both matches as well as postgame reaction from Cochranton and Conneaut. McDowell also advanced after winning the District 10 Class AAA championship. The Trojans have dominated Class AAA recently and will look to get by Norwin on Tuesday.
•The Hickory girls soccer team won its first District 10 championship on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Mercyhurst Prep. The Hornets became the second southern program in District 10 to win a girls soccer title. Wilmington won the D-10 Class A title in 2010, 2011 and this fall as well. Hickory will need to refocus for a PIAA run on Tuesday and the Hornets could meet the Lakers against next fall. Hickory is loaded with juniors and Mercyhurst Prep is sophomore-heavy, meaning the two teams could battle for D-10 again in 2014.

•The Harbor Creek boys soccer team moved to 20-0-0 on the season with a 4-0 win over Warren in the District 10 Class AA championship. Eric Campbell scored three goals and finished with six in two District 10 playoff matches. Koltin Hammer scored four goals earlier in the week, meaning Campbell and Hammer combined for 10 of the Huskies’ 11 playoff goals. It’s hard to imagine that there is a better scoring duo in District 10 than Campbell-Hammer. Harbor Creek will begin its chase for a state title on Tuesday. District 10 does not have an outright boys soccer state title. Cathedral Prep tied Strath Haven for the PIAA Class AAA title in 2001. D-10 does have a girls outright title in 2010 as Mercyhurst Prep defeated South Park 3-0.

•Here is a list of District 10 soccer and volleyball champions this fall:
Boys soccer – Mercyhurst Prep (Class A), Harbor Creek (Class AA), McDowell (Class AAA)
Girls soccer - Wilmington (Class A), Hickory (Class AA), McDowell (Class AAA)
Girls volleyball – Cochranton (Class A), Conneaut (Class AA), McDowell (Class AAA)

The District 10 fall season will conclude with the football championships in three weeks.
