High schools across the country are looking for ways to cut costs, including cutting sports all together. In McKinney, Texas, school administrators have found a way to save thousands of dollars. High school head coaches are being required to drive the team bus to and from away games. All coaches will receive training to drive a bus and will be paid $40 each time they sit behind the wheel. If a coach isn’t trained and won’t drive the bus, they won’t be able to coach. Click here for the blog item from the Dallas Morning News.

Thank you for your patience through some technical difficulties this weekend. The Breakout Player of the Week voting for all four polls will extend to Wednesday night at 11:59 p.m. this week because of the lost voting time. The baseball and softball winners will still be featured in Friday’s paper and the track and field winners will be in Saturday’s edition.

Former Fort LeBoeuf wrestling coach Ryan Yates, who led the Bisons for most of their 2007-08 season and all of 2008-09, has resigned from that same position at Burrell.

Yates, 28, wrestled for the WPIAL power in high school before competing at Edinboro University, where he recently received his master’s degree and principal’s certification. He took over the Bucaneers from longtime coach Chris Como, who served as an assistant for the 2010-11 season.

Cathedral Prep’s Tyler Parsons and General McLane’s Caleb Baker were the only first-round winners of the 14 District 10 entries who began Thursday’s PIAA Class AAA wrestling tournament.

The district didn’t have a single winner until Parsons survived a 2-1 overtime tiebreaker against Southern Lehigh’s Matt Gotzon at 145 pounds. The Ramblers senior will face Nick Catalano of Canon-McMillan in Friday afternoon’s championship quarterfinals.

Baker salvaged the district’s poor showing with a 3-1 decision over Williamsport’s Tim Maeshack at heavyweight. The Lancers senior continues his bid for a second straight state medal with Friday morning’s championship quarterfinal against Chambersburg’s Dawson Peck.

Thursday’s district results from the AAA meet are listed below.

York Catholic, the team Villa Maria defeated the past two years in the PIAA Class AA championship, looks like it will be returning to State College once again. The Fighting Irish (28-0), the No. 1 team in the state, captured its six straight D-3 championship on Thursday with a 61-45 win over fellow eastern power Delone Catholic.

The scary thing about York Catholic this season is the fact that Vanderbilt recruit Kady Schrann is only one of several big-time scorers. In fact, Schrann (11 points) was outscored by teammates Rachel Forjan (18) and Morgan Klunk (16) against Delone Catholic. Click here for the game story from the Harrisburg Patriot-News.

Zac Peters

In a 100-73 victory over General McLane on Jan. 13, he finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:02.56) and 200 free (2:06.03) and was a member of the winning 200 medley and 200 free relays as the ’Pickers improved to 4-3 in Region 2.
