More than 5,500 votes were cast this week as fans showed up in a big way. McDowell’s Ryan Platz won the baseball poll, while fellow Trojan Brian Rubin secured the spring athlete poll. Mercyhurst Prep power hitter Chelsea Czerwinski won the softball poll, but the most interesting races came in track and field. Strong Vincent’s Josh Natalie had a strong run Tuesday to overtake Central Tech’s Greg Miaczynski in the boys poll. On the girls’ side, Sophie Mazza of Harbor Creek led for most of the voting period but Fort LeBoeuf’s Brittany Cook took over in the final hour to win the poll.

Harbor Creek just missed out on the playoffs last season and were affected by the poor play in Region 3. If Region 3 had four viable playoff teams, the Huskies might have received their shot at the postseason. Harbor Creek has a mix of non-region games, including a season-finale at Greenville, which could be important in the playoff picture. The Huskies will celebrate Senior Night right away on Aug. 31 against Iroquois and Homecoming on Oct. 5 against Fairview.

Maria Peluso

Peluso is a key player on one of District 10’s premier teams. That was evident when Fort LeBoeuf beat General McLane in four games last week, ending the Lancers’ 53-match Region 5 winning streak.

Peluso was a force on the front line, striking for a team-high 17 kills while helping the Bisons stay unbeaten in region play.

The 5-foot 6-inch power hitter will be an instrumental player if LeBoeuf hopes to contend for the District 10 Class AA title and a return trip to the PIAA tournament.

She is the third consecutive Fort LeBoeuf volleyball player to win the award, following Abby Rose and Lindsay Bean.
