The Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic has become one of the great traditions in Pennsylvania wrestling. District 10 will have one representative on the Pennsylvania roster in Reynolds star Austin Matthews. The Clarion recruit finished with 184 career wins and won the PIAA Class AA 152-pound championship on Saturday. Camp Hill’s Ryan Diehl is a four-time state champion, while Canon-McMillan’s Cody Wiercioch and Pen Argyl’s Michael Racciato are three-time PIAA champions. The biggest draw could be at 126 pounds. Canon-McMillan’s Connor Schram will wrestle Joey Dance from Christianburg, who is ranked No. 1 in the country. Dance is part of the Virginia team, which will wrestle the WPIAL all-stars at 4 p.m. followed by Pennsylvania against the United States all-stars. The two matches will take place March 17 at Fitzgerald Field House at the University of Pittsburgh.

Results of District 10 wrestlers from Saturday’s PIAA Class AA tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey. Each result will include a note on that particular match. Updates will be provided as soon as possible. The top eight wrestlers in each division will receive medals:

– Mike Copper

Championship finals

106 pounds

Devin Brown (Saegertown) won by a pin at 6:12 of overtime over Luke Karam (Bethlehem Catholic). Brown fell the tiring Karam in OT to become the Panthers’ first PIAA champion since Pat Bradshaw (189) in 2005.

152 pounds

Austin Matthews (Reynolds) won a 4-2 decision over Kyle Bova (Coudersport). Matthews (49-1) became the Raiders’ 23rd individual PIAA titlist, the most for a District 10 program.

285 pounds

Sam Breese (Lakeview) won a 3-1 decision over Nicholas Budd (Port Allegany). District 10 goes 3-for-3 in PIAA AA finals thanks to Breese, who won in dramatic fashion when he reversed Budd as time ran out.

Consolation finals

Third place

138 pounds

Michael Bonner (Sharon) won by a 5-3 decision over Brock Zacherl (Brookville). Bonner (37-4) fought off Zacherl’s shots over the third period to maintain his two-point lead in his last scholastic match.

160 pounds

Taylor Fox (Fort LeBoeuf) lost a 1-0 decision to Ty Walter (Mifflinburg). A finger injury early in the match hindered Fox from avenging his championship quarterfinal loss to Walter.

182 pounds

Dylan Reynolds (Saegertown) lost a 7-2 decision to Adam Mackie (Brandywine Heights). The Panthers’ last medalist concluded his sophomore season at 45-6.

220 pounds

Cam Cyphert (Cochranton) won a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker over Jake Temple (Avella). Cyphert (35-3) will join fellow 220-pounder Evan Daley of Fort LeBoeuf and state champ Austin Matthews of Reynolds at Clarion University next season.

Fifth place

126 pounds

Jarray Norris (Sharon) won a 10-5 overtime decision over Kent Lane (Southern Columbia). Norrison finished his scholastic career with a victory via takedown and nearfall during the match’s extra minute.

170 pounds

Tim Vargo (Union City) won by an overtime pin in 5:58 over Alexander Gular (Port Allegany). In his last match for the Bears, Vargo (26-2) avoided a tiebreaker when he emphatically flattened Gular with 2 seconds left in OT.

220 pounds

Evan Daley (Fort LeBoeuf) won an 8-0 major decision over Cody Jacobs (West Greene). The shutout concluded Daley’s four-year career with the Bison, which included his 40-6 senior season.

Seventh place

120 pounds

Tyler Vath (Saegertown) defaulted to Bryan Israel (Saucon Valley). Vath conceded seventh place because a split lip he suffered during Friday’s competition.

126 pounds

Nick Monico (Saegertown) lost a 3-0 decision to Andrew Schutz (Wyoming Area). Monico’s eighth-place medal capped his 35-15 freshman season.

145 pounds

Levi Stoyer (Reynolds) won a 5-1 decision over Briton Shelton (Bermudian Springs). Stoyer (42-8) clinched seventh place on a single-leg takedown with 2 seconds left.

182 pounds

Jamar Henry (Reynolds) won an 8-6 decision over Garrett Wesneski (Canton). Henry (38-12) stood on the Giant Center podium after his final match for the Raiders.

Results of District 10 wrestlers from Saturday’s PIAA Class AAA tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey. Each result will include a note on that particular match. Updates will be provided as soon as possible. The top eight wrestlers in each division will receive medals:

– Mike Copper

Championship finals

285 pounds

Andrew Welton (Central Tech) was pinned at 5:04 by Aaron Bradley (Nazareth). Welton (34-2) sought to become the Erie School District’s first PIAA champion since heavyweight Melvin Crosby of Academy.

Championship semifinals

285 pounds

Andrew Welton (Central Tech) won a 3-0 decision over Brad Emerick (James Coughlin). Welton got a conceded escape point to start the third period and then his lone takedown with 35 seconds left in the match. At 34-1, he’ll take on Nazareth’s Aaron Bradley (36-1) for the 2013 PIAA AAA heavyweight title. PCN will broadcast the match live, with Welton having the chance to become the Erie School District’s first state titlist since Academy heavyweight Melvin Crosby in 1988.

Consolation quarterfinals (losers to seventh-place finals)

113 pounds

Jake Gromacki (Cathedral Prep) won a 6-4 overtime decision over Tanner Shoap (Chambersburg). A great comeback for Gromacki, who was awarded a two-point reversal as the regulation buzzer sounded and then took down Shoap with 36 seconds left in the extra minute.

152 pounds

Dan Krysiak (Cathedral Prep) lost a 7-4 decision to Raymond Nicosia (Pocono Mountain East). Nicosia generated enough offense over the match’s first half to drop Krysiak into the seventh-place final.

160 pounds

Tyree Spearman (McDowell) won a 5-3 decision over Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Whitemarsh). Spearman left Staudenmayer bloodied and bandaged before he recorded his two takedowns in the match’s last 35 seconds.

Ossie Bowers (General McLane) lost a 7-2 decision to Bobby Fehr (Northampton). Fehr recorded four points in the match’s final minute to assure that Bowers will vie for seventh place in his last scholastic match.

Consolation semifinals (losers to fifth-place finals)

113 pounds

Jake Gromacki (Cathedral Prep) won a 10-5 decision over A.C. Headlee (Waynesburg). Gromacki will wrestle Pennridge’s Scott Parker, whom he lost to 3-2 in the championship quarterfinals, for third place.

160 pounds

Tyree Spearman (McDowell) lost by a pin in 2:10 to Zack Zavatsky (Greater Latrobe). Zavatsky cradled Spearman from the top to send to send the Trojans junior into the fifth-place final.

Third-place finals

113 pounds

Jake Gromacki (Cathedral Prep) lost a 1-0 decision to Scott Parker (Pennridge). Parker won their rematch with his second-period escape point, with Gromacki unable to generate any chances of escaping from the bottom until the third period’s waning seconds.

Fifth-place finals

160 pounds

Tyree Spearman (McDowell) won a 3-2 decision over Bobby Fehr (Northampton). Spearman, who began the three-day meet with a perfect record, left it at 20-2.

Seventh-place finals

152 pounds

Dan Krysiak (Cathedral Prep) defaulted to Brendan Burnham (Pine-Richland). It’s not immediately known what the reason was for the premature end to Krysiak’s career with the Ramblers.

160 pounds

Ossie Bowers (General McLane) lost a 2-1 decision to Justin Staudenmayer (Plymouth Whitemarsh). Bowers was 7 seconds away from seventh place when Staudenmayer rolled the McLane senior for the match’s lone takedown.

Lakeview wrestler Sam Breese came up with a big performance when he needed it the most. The junior won the 285-pound class at the Class AA northwest regional in Sharon to earn a spot in the PIAA championship tournament in Hershey. Breese picked up an impressive pin of Union City’s Jeff Burger in 1 minute, 49 seconds to win a loaded bracket.

He continued his dominance this weekend at the PIAA meet, winning three straight matches to earn a spot in today’s Class AA title match. He earned a trip to the finals by pinning Bethlehem Catholic’s Andrew Dunn 4 minutes, 34 seconds. He will face Port Allegany’s Nicholas Budd (36-1) in the finals.

Results of District 10 wrestlers from Friday’s PIAA Class AAA tournament at the Giant Center in Hershey. Each result will include a note on that particular match. Updates will be provided as soon as possible. The top eight wrestlers in each division will receive medals:

– Mike Copper

Championship quarterfinals

106 pounds

Joe Wheeling (General McLane) lost a 5-4 decision to Tyrone Klump (Nazareth). Wheeling couldn’t fully recover from a 5-0 deficit and dropped into the consolation second round.

113 pounds

Jake Gromacki (Cathedral Prep) lost a 3-2 decision to Scott Parker (Pennridge). If Gromacki medals a third straight year at states, it will be in the consolation bracket.

120 pounds

Paul Deitz (McDowell) lost a 6-2 decision Vincenzo Joseph (Central Columbia). Joseph dictated the latter half of the match to eliminate Deitz from title contention.

132 pounds

Nick Gibson (McDowell) lost by a pin in 5:23 to Francesco Fabozzi (Central Bucks East). A shocking loss for Gibson, who led at 8-4 at the time of Fabozzi’s fall.

152 pounds

Dan Krysiak (Cathedral Prep) lost an 8-2 decision to T.C. Warner (Cumberland Valley). Warner dropped Krysiak (24-11) into a consolation second-rounder against General McLane’s Mike Sutton.

160 pounds

Tyree Spearman (McDowell) lost a 3-2 decision to Zach Voytek (Greensburg Salem). Spearman’s first loss this season was the result of a caution point whistled against him with 1:07 left in the third period.

285 pounds

Andrew Welton (Central Tech) won a 5-2 decision over Joey Goodhart (Hempfield). History is made, as Welton (33-1) is now guaranteed to be Central Tech’s first PIAA medalist of any kind since the merger of Tech Memorial and Academy for the 1992-93 academic year.

Consolation second round (losers eliminated)

106 pounds

Championship semifinals

106 pounds

Devin Brown (Saegertown) won a 5-0 decision over Jacob Wasser (Palisades). Brown (47-1) has a chance to become the Panthers’ first PIAA champion since Pat Bradshaw claimed AA’s 189 title in 2005.

138 pounds

Michael Bonner (Sharon) lost a 3-2 decision to Seth Lansberry (Line Mountain). Lansberry scored the winning takedown with 38 seconds left in the third period.

152 pounds

Austin Matthews (Reynolds) won a 16-7 major decision over Ryan Preisch (Milton). With his third consecutive appearance in a PIAA final, Matthews (48-1) has the chance to extend the Raiders’ District 10 record with their 23rd individual PIAA title.

170 pounds

Tim Vargo (Union City) lost a 10-0 major decision to Pete Renda (Brandywine Heights). Chris Clark (1970) will remain the only Bears wrestler ever to make a PIAA final, as Renda (41-0) ends the bid of Vargo, and Erie County, to place a championship finalist.

182 pounds

Dylan Reynolds (Saegertown) lost a 9-1 major decision to Dakota Deslauriers (Burrell). Reynolds became the 35th opponent to succumb to the undefeated senior from the WPIAL.

220 pounds

Cam Cyphert (Cochranton) lost by a pin in 25 seconds to Ray O’Donnell (Saucon Valley). O’Donnell’s lightning-quick fall means that Cypher and Fort LeBoeuf’s Evan Daley, future Clarion University teammates, will meet for the third and final time in the postseason.

285 pounds

Sam Breese (Lakeview) won by a pin in 4:34 over Andrew Dunn (Bethlehem Catholic). Breese’s fall means that District 10 will have three PIAA championship finalists, joining Saegertown’s Devin Brown (106) and Austin Matthews (152).

Championship quarterfinals

106 pounds

126 pounds

170 pounds

Tim Vargo (Union City) won a 4-2 decision over Tyler Dibert (Chestnut Ridge). Vargo (25-1) required two timeouts for bloody nose and a third for a left knee injury, but persevered to become Erie County’s first AA semifinalist.
