Bradford Owls
Coach (season, record): Jeff Puglio (4th season, 17-13)
2011 overall record: 3-7
2011 region record (place): 3-3 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 9 playoffs.
Top players lost: David Reinhardt, Zach Vleminckx, Dan Kline, Danny Rinfrette, Zach Britton, Dylan Lamberson
Top returning players: Matt Yurkiewicz, Nunzio Cavallero, Pat Asinger, Josh Corignani, Kyle Langdon
Assistant coaches: Jeff Pascarella, John Siffrinn, Andy Reid, Tom Reid, Davis Redington
Outlook: Bradford went through some growing pains in 2011 with three wins and a young team. The Owls gutted out a few region wins and gained valuable experience for this fall. Bradford moved to a new region and won’t have to deal with powerhouses like Cathedral Prep and Strong Vincent. The Owls, who are now in Region 5, could be a team to keep an eye on in a region without a clear favorite. Corry and Grove City moved down to Class AA, leaving the door open for every team in the region.

Bradford will have some holes to fill with the graduation of David Reinhardt, Zach Vleminckx, Dan Kline, Danny Rinfrette, Zach Britton and Dylan Lamberson. Reinhardt was an all-region first-team selection as an offensive lineman and linebacker last fall, while Kline was a first-team defensive lineman and second-team offensive lineman. Britton and Rinfrette were Bradford’s top rushers last fall. Britton had 750 yards on 115 carries, including five touchdowns, while Rinfrette carried the ball 98 times for 510 yards and five TDs. Rinfrette also caught six passes for 54 yards. The biggest impact might be felt on defense. Reinhardt led the Owls with 104 tackles, while Vleminckx and Kline had 53 and 47 tackles, respectively. Lamberson, who also graduated, led Bradford with three sacks.

Bradford recently opened a new sports and fitness center for its students and that could translate to more motivation in the weight room. Matt Yurkiewicz, a vocal leader on and off the field, could be key for the Owls this season. The senior threw for 303 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 454 yards with two touchdowns last fall. Yurkiewicz was also second on the team with 66 tackles. Nunzio Cavallero, Pat Asinger, Josh Corignani, Kyle Langdon and Ty Riley are also back this fall. Asinger was voted to the all-region first team as a punter, while Riley was a second-team kicker. Cavallero was one of the top defensive backs in the region last fall with five interceptions and returned five kickoffs for 125 yards. Bradford’s biggest stretch will come at the end of September. After opening the home schedule against rival Olean (N.Y.) and Oil City, the Owls take on Warren, Slippery Rock and DuBois in consecutive weeks. Bradford returns to District 9 for the playoffs each season and will need to overcome Clearfield or Punxsutawney in the District 9 points rankings to get into the postseason.

Schedule

Bradford Owls
Coach: Jeff Puglio
2008 overall record: 5-5
2008 region record (place): 2-2 (third place, Region 6)
Playoff results: Did not make the playoffs
Top players lost: QB/S Tyler Grandy, HB/S Mike Pascarella, OT/DT Steven Reinhardt, G/LB Casey Graffius,
Top players returning: TE/DE Michael Marasco, HB/S Pat Pascarella, K/ SE/CB Cody Nuzzo
Key games: Oct. 16 vs. Strong Vincent, Oct. 30 vs. Cathedral Prep
Outlook: Bradford finished third in region six last season and they will have to make major improvements to leapfrog Strong Vincent and Cathedral Prep next season. The Owls do return their leading rusher and leading receiver, and he’s the same player. As a Sophomore Pat Pascarella had 776 rushing yards and a 6.99 average per attempt in the running game, he also had 159reciving yards with a 20 yard average per reception. He had only seven touchdowns total last season, but that number could go up with more experience. Bradford didn’t have many representatives on the all-region teams for region six, but those they did have on the first team just graduated. Pascarella and Mike Marasco (TE) made the second team all-region offensive squad and Pascarella was a second team selection at defensive back. Cody Nuzzo was a first team all-region selection as a kicker. Bradford was 4-1 at home last season with their only home loss coming at the hands of the region 4 champion North East. But the Owls played by Prep and Strong Vincent on the road last season and that ended badly for the Owls. This year both travel to Bradford. That may not make a huge difference but it could be a factor. Bradford loses a few key players to graduation but it can continue to grow but passing Prep and Strong Vincent in the region could be too big a task. The Owls also had injury issues last season and are entering into their first season under new head coach Jeff Puglio. Both of which could play factors into how fast well Bradford fares next season.

Schedule

Strong Vincent and Cathedral Prep were the two best teams in Region 6 last year and it looks like they will be again this fall. Region 6 will expand in 2010 as DuBois will join District 10 for football only. The Colonels seem to keep reloading each year and will be a contender in Class AAA despite losing playmakers like Deonte Flemings, Robert Joyce, D.J. Barney, Brandon Marlow, etc. The Colonels’ defense and offensive/defensive lines didn’t lose a ton of players and should be strong again. The Ramblers are back under coach Mike Mischler and could give Vincent trouble this season. Prep all-around athletes Shyquawn Pullium and RaSean Thrower will be utilized in different ways and could be the keys to Prep’s season. The 2008 D-10 Class AAA final was all-Region 6 and it very well could be again this season. Vincent advanced to the PIAA semifinals but fell to playoff-rival Thomas Jefferson. Here is a look at last year’s Region 6 standings:
