Fairview’s Robert Sikatzki, Mercyhurst Prep’s Griffin Schaetzle and Corry’s Brent Benedict are the top three seeds, respectively, in the 100 backstroke in what might be the most competitive race at this weekend’s D-10 championships.

The District 10 released the psych sheets for the Class AA and Class AAA meets, which take place Friday and Saturday at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center. Remember, DuBois is swimming in the D-10 Class AAA meet this year.

Reid Morrison

Cathedral Prep sophomore Reid Morrison had a breakout freshman season with two medals at the District 10 Class AAA championships.

Morrison placed third in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 100 free and is looking for more this season.

In a recent meet against Mercyhurst Prep, Morrison won the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.25 seconds while also swimming on the winning 200 medley, 200 free and 400 free relay teams.

He also won the 200 free and was on the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams in a win over Meadville on Monday.

McDowell’s Jonathan Ekas is the leader in four events, and Cathedral Prep’s Rex Riley leads three events. Among the girls, Julia Rahner has the top time in four events, while McDowell’s Danielle Snyder and Meadville’s Mylinda Hartnett each lead two events.

The following list is not intended to be the definitive times of all Erie County performers, but to give fans a cross section of the top times. The Fairview boys and Mercyhurst Prep girls in particular will have a healthy number of high seeds entering next week’s state championships.

Also, area swimmers who didn’t advance automatically found out today if they will advance to the PIAA championships based on times. District 10 is well-represented with time qualifiers.

Later this week, the PIAA is expected to release a complete psych sheet including blended seeds for automatic and time qualifiers.

Mercyhurst Prep’s Rylee Klomp leads the district with a pair of No. 1 seeds in Class AA. She’s top-seeded in the 50-yard freestyle (23.69) and 100-yard freestyle (51.70), and she’s a member of Lakers’ top-seeded 200 medley relay team (1:49.37) and third-seeded 400 freestyle relay (3:36.19). Klomp set D-10 Class AA meet and pool records in both the 50 free and 100 free this past weekend.

Her teammate, Marie Georger, is a No. 1 seed but not in the event that most might expect. Georger is the three-time defending PIAA champion in the 100 backstroke, but she is seeded third in that event with a 55.83. Georger is seeded No. 1 in the 200 individual medley (2:05.60) after finishing second in the state in that event past two seasons.

One other highly ranked individual among Class AA girls is Wilmington freshman Lauren Barber. She’s seeded second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.46) and 100 breaststroke (1:06.23). Barber set D-10 meet and pool records in the 200 free Friday.

Among District 10 Class AA boys, Fairview has three top seeds: the 200 medley relay team (1:38.79), Harrison Grimm in the 200 freestyle (1:44.14) and Danny Roberts in diving (549.70). Roberts, the defending PIAA champion, is coming off a record performance in the D-10 meet and is more than 74 points ahead of the No. 2 seed.

Fairview’s Richard “R.J.” Petrella is seeded No. 2 in the 200 IM (1:56.00) and No. 3 in the 100 free (47.13).  Fairview’s 400 free relay team also is seeded second (3:16.71).

Meanwhile, Franklin’s Phil Emerson is seeded first in Class AA in the 50 free (21.07) and 100 free (46.37). He set D-10 Class AA meet records in both events this past weekend.

Mercyhurst Prep’s David Benczkowski is No. 2 in the 100 backstroke (53.52), and Corry freshman Brent Benedict is seeded No. 3 (53.55).

Led by sprinter Kevin Intrieri, McDowell is top seeded among Class AAA boys teams in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.66). Individually, Intrieri is seeded second in the 50 free (20.77) and fourth in the 100 free (46.17). He set or tied meet and pool records in both events at the D-10 championships.

Richard “R.J.” Rahner leads Cathedral Prep with a No. 4 seed (50.15) in the 100 butterfly.

In Class AAA, McDowell’s girls have one seed among the top 10 on the psych sheets, diver Kristen Overholt (432.20) at No. 8.

Daniel Bauman

There’s a new Bauman swimming at Cathedral Prep. Daniel is the youngest of four Bauman brothers who have excelled in the pool for the Ramblers. (Their father was an assistant coach.) Daniel Bauman, a freshman, showed last week that he also could be a key contributor in the future.

Bauman took advantage of some valuable pool time in Prep’s veteran lineup, and he responded by recording four wins in two Region 3 meets.

In Prep’s victory over Central Tech Feb. 6, Bauman turned in a first-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle, touching in 2 minutes, 5.95 seconds. He also swam a leg on the winning 400 free relay.

Three days later, Bauman won the 200 individual medley (2:22.29) and 100 backstroke (1:00.30) to help the Ramblers to a lopsided win over East.

Zach Miller

Miller is one of the latest young standouts in Cathedral Prep’s tradition-rich program.

Miller, a sophomore, opened the season by finishing first in the 100-yard freestyle (51.24 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:56.53) in the Ramblers’ victory over Strong Vincent Dec. 9. He also swam on the winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

Miller added to his win total Monday by winning the 50 free (23.21) and anchoring the 200 medley relay in a win over Mercyhurst Prep.
