Last year Linesville, Mercer and Farrell all finished with one loss in the region to be crowned co-champions. The key game among those teams was in Week 2 when Mercer knocked off Farrell 20-0. The Steelers were missing some impact players and the Mustangs took advantage with a huge win. Region 1 is one of two Class A regions, and was clearly the most talented. Three of the final four teams in the District 10 Class A playoffs were from Region 1, including both teams in the D-10 title game. Here are the final Region 1 standings from last season.

Region 1

Conneaut Valley Indians
Coach: Scott Hoover
2008 overall record: 0-10
2008 league record (place): 0-8 (ninth in Region 1)
Playoff results: Did not make District 10 playoffs

Andrew Butterfield

Top players lost: B/CB Kyle Welker, HB/LB Mike Leonard, WR/CB Jacob Walters, TE/DE Jeff Conley, T Cody Kubeja, C/DE Derek King, T/G Sam Naas
Top returning players: FB/LB Andrew Butterfield, QB/S Casey Baker, FB/LB Jake Conley, T Dan Yearick
Key games: Sept. 18 vs. Conneaut Lake, Oct. 9 at Linesville
Outlook: Conneaut Valley did not win a game last season, so there is no where to go but up. Casey Baker and Kyle Welker split time at quarterback last season. Welker has graduated, so Baker (317 yards passing) is the favorite to take the reins this year. He threw no touchdowns and five interceptions last season. Valley has its leading rusher returning in Andrew Butterfield (515 yards, 4 TDs). The Indians’ second leading rusher, Mike Leonard, was lost to graduation. Leonard was also the team’s second best receiver statistically. Conneaut Valley also loses Jacob Walters, the team’s top receiver from a year ago,.and three senior offensive linemen graduated as well. The Indians will have a lot of new faces on the field next year. That group will try to rebound from a winless season in which Conneaut Lake allowed opponents to score an average of 37.8 points per game and the Indians scored just 10.8 themselves.

Schedule
September
4 Iroquois
11 at Lakeview*
18 Conneaut Lake*
25 at Farrell*
October
