Corner Kick – Fairview

Fairview Tigers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Jamin Bookhamer (2nd season, 15-4-1)
2011 overall record: 15-4-1
2011 region record (place): 5-2-1 (second)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Mercer 2-1 in the District 10 Class A semifinals before losing to Mercyhurst Prep 3-1 in the District 10 championship.
Top player lost: Aidan Murphey
Top returning players: Greg Berdis, Mac Tompkins, Anthony Martone, Ben Irwin, Nick Pfeffer, Jakub Blank, Carl Fonticella, Joe Breisinger, Corban Murphey, Ben Gebhart
Assistant coaches: Ryan Bookhamer, Marc Fiorelli, Jim Hrinda, Jake Dodd
Outlook: Fairview has a prime opportunity to reclaim the District 10 Class A championship this season. The Tigers have nearly everyone back from last year’s D-10 runner-up team. Fairview will have to replace all-region first-team defender Aidan Murphey. The Tigers return 10 starters from last fall and 16 players who scored at least one goal. Greg Berdis, a first-team offensive selection, has been a dominant goal scorer for several years and is joined up front by second-team offensive selections Anthony Martone and Ben Irwin. All-region second-team defender Mac Tompkins is back as well as second-team goalkeeper Corban Murphey. Tristrum Tuttle, Austin Fiedler, Ian Miller and Sean Berger could also see playing time this season to add depth for the Tigers. Fairview seemed frustrated at times last season as the Tigers kept it close but were swept by PIAA runner-up Mercyhurst Prep. Fairview is primed to break through this fall with the most experience back among all District 10 teams. The Tigers enter the season as the favorite to win the region and district titles and could make a PIAA run in November. Fairview still has to prove itself as a team and will get its chances on Oct. 1 and Oct. 17 against rival Mercyhurst Prep.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Lyndsay Violi (4th season, 27-21-4)
2011 overall record: 11-6-1
2011 region record (place): 7-4-1 (fourth)
2011 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Michalla Martin, Emily Tallmadge
Top returning players: Lizzie Hauk, Jess Mihalic, Elle Bennett, Anna Reynolds
Assistant coaches: Trina Brozewicz, Diana Klochak
Outlook: Fairview is still rebuilding to try and get to the level it was add several years ago. The Tigers are headed in that direction but they have two big holes to fill this season. Goalkeeper Emily Tallmadge, an all-region first-team selection, had a 1.21 GAA last fall and allowed only 20 goals in 17 matches. Sweeper Michalla Martin has also graduated. Martin was voted to the first team on defense as a senior. The Tigers will look to break through and return to the postseason this fall with an experienced team. Lizzie Hauk is back at midfield and is a leader on the field, while Jess Mihalic, a second-team offensive player, had six goals and four assists last year. Elle Bennett, a first-team offensive player, paced Fairview with seven goals as a junior and can be an impact player this season. Anna Reynolds returns after leading the Tigers with eight assists, while freshman Maya Fanazini could contribute right away this year. With its main corps back, Fairview could be a dangerous team. The Tigers dropped down to Class A this season and could be an instant favorite to win the D-10 title.
