The District 10 Committee finalized its district alignment for most of the fall regions and all of the winter regions for the 2012-13 and 2013-14 school years Wednesday. Action was delayed on the spring regions.

Join Tom Reisenweber on the Varsity blog today at noon when he hosts a live blog to discuss the future regions and the changes ahead.

What do you like about the region alignments? What are the most exciting matchups that lie ahead? Which changes do you disagree with or which regions could have been aligned better? Do you miss the old Erie County, Metro, FCVC and other leagues?

Readers are welcome to ask questions or give feedback.

Also, sign up for the Varsity Letter, our weekly District 10 sports e-newsletter. This Friday’s edition will focus on the D-10′s original realignment eight years ago.

Finally, next week’s Varsity print edition (Feb. 15) will take an in-depth look at the regions for the next two-year cycle.

The coverage starts today when Tom chats with fans here on the Varsity blog. Join him at noon.

The District 10 Committee held its first meeting of the school year on Wednesday at the Iroquois Fishing & Boating Club in Conneaut Lake. Here are some of the high points of the meeting.
Several schools will not be sponsoring specific sports for the 2011-12 school year. General McLane will not have a girls tennis team, while Maplewood will not have a boys soccer team and Titusville won’t have a boys tennis team.
-The committee reviewed a big change from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association regarding co-operative agreements. The rule had been when two schools enter a co-op agreement for a sport, the sponsoring school would have to count the enrollment for both schools. The PIAA decided in July to pass a rule that the secondary school would only count half of their enrollment.
The new rule had a direct affect on Linesville football. Linesville and Conneaut Lake entered a co-op earlier this year when Conneaut Lake canceled its football program. Linesville would have moved from Class A to AA under the old rule, but with the new guidelines in place, the Lions still fall in the Class A range.
A result of the new rule can affect several D-10 sports teams. Cathedral Prep has the option of moving down from Class AAAA to AAA in basketball because of their co-op with Villa Maria being cut in half. Commodore Perry baseball could move down from AAA to AA, Conneaut Lake cross country from AAA to AA, Conneaut Valley boys soccer from AA to A and Jamestown softball from AAA to AA. All teams have until Aug. 17 to decide if they want to move down.
-The D-10 Committee also denied Farrell High School’s request to leave D-10 to become a member of District 7. The Steelers have gone back and forth between the two districts over the past two decades and were told if they came back to D-10, they would be staying. Farrell couldn’t start the process of getting approval from District 7 without being released from D-10.
-Andy Krahe and Nancy Mason joined the D-10 Committee. Krahe is the new athletic directors representative, while Mason is the female officials rep. Also, junior high rep Kirk Scurpa was named to the PIAA Board of Directors as the junior high rep.

Kickoff to the District 10 football season has arrived even sooner than you might believe.

Kickoff, a first-of-its-kind magazine produced by the Erie Times-News sports staff, is now available exclusively at 70 Country Fair locations in northwestern Pennsylvania. Cover price is $5.

Kickoff is a full-color, glossy 112-page magazine filled with the details fans crave heading into training camp and the season: Breakdowns of every team in District 10 — plus new WPIAL member McDowell Senior High School — position battles to watch at camp, roster returnees, 2009 statistics, team schedules and more.

But Kickoff also is filled with unique stories:

  • The people who knew late Girard coach Mina George well recall his lasting impact.
  • Fans got to know Leonard Ford as he coached East High School to a winning record for the first time in 28 years during the 2009 season. Kickoff introduces you to a side of Ford fans might not know — the loyal and inspiring mentor who always has a minute to spare.
  • The sparkling new Cathedral Prep Events Center adds yet another turf field to District 10, leading us to ask whether the once ubiquitous grass field is dying in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Plus, meet the Times-News Preseason Player of the Year, check out a Q&A with Fairview senior and Penn State recruit Jordan Kerner, get your first look at our D-10 preseason rankings and find trading card-style photos of select players from around the district.

Camps opened Monday, and the season starts Sept. 3. Kickoff will put you in the know for both important seasons.
