Andrew Niland

Fairview sophomore Andy Niland has the Tigers in line for another District 10 Class AA playoff spot this winter.

A sharpshooter and leader on the floor, Niland, who started as a freshman, put together a big performance against rival Mercyhurst Prep last week, hitting six 3-pointers on his way to 22 points in the 48-39 win.

He is one of the top scoring sophomores in District 10 at 14.5 points per game and is a big reason why Fairview fans can count on the Tigers remaining a D-10 contender over the next few years.

Robert Sikatzki

Fans who look at the top Class AA swimming times in Erie County this season can see the impact that German exhange student Robert Sikatzki is having.

Sikatzki, a junior at Fairview, has dominated the regular season.  Out of the eight individual swimming events, Sikatzki has the top time in seven. He’s also second in the 100-yard breaststroke. In addition, Sikatzki has been a member of each of the three Fairview relays that have recorded the top times in Erie County.

Among Class AA girls, North East’s Hannah Feucht and Mercyhurst Prep’s Rylee Klomp each have the low time in two events. Meanwhile, Fairview has two of the top three relays.

The following list of times is gathered from meets phoned in to the Erie Times-News this season. The list is not intended to be the definitive times of all Erie County performers, but to give fans a cross section of the top times. Coaches are welcome to contact the Times-News by e-mail at sports@timesnews.com to report omissions or updated times. The list will then be updated.

We will post Class AAA’s top performances later today.

If the PIAA psych sheets are any indication, District 10 is positioned for a memorable PIAA swim meet March 14-17 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

The Fairview boys and Mercyhurst Prep girls in particular will have a healthy number of high seeds entering next week’s state championships.

Also, area swimmers who didn’t advance automatically found out today if they will advance to the PIAA championships based on times. District 10 is well-represented with time qualifiers.

Later this week, the PIAA is expected to release a complete psych sheet including blended seeds for automatic and time qualifiers.

She showed her potential last week by recording a combined five event wins in two meets. In the Tigers’ 124-46 victory over Girard Jan. 26, Sundberg won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 26.98 seconds. She also swam a leg on the first-place 400 freestyle relay.

In Fairview’s 134-36 win over Iroquois Jan. 23, Sundberg again won the 50 free (27.23) and was a member of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.
