Fall Fastbreak – Saegertown

Saegertown Panthers
Coach (season, record): Greg Molnar (4th season, 22-45)
2010-11 overall record: 4-18
2010-11 region record (place): 4-4 (third)
2010-11 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Casey Handel, Kyle McCray
Top returning players: Dustin Pavlik, Shane Rigby, Luke Carter, Caleb Ohmer, Matt Mondi, Jeff Mattocks,
Assistant coaches: Tom Reynolds, Todd Schlosser, Terry Deane, Dylan Johnston
Outlook: Saegertown endured numerous injuries last winter which could turn out to be a positive. The Panthers were able to play several players more minutes than expected to gain valuable experience. Saegertown lost Casey Handel and Kyle McCray to graduation, but everyone else is back. Seniors Caleb Ohmer and Matt Mondi provide leadership, while the Panthers have plenty of size in their junior class. Dustin Pavlik (6 feet, 2 inches), Shane Rigby (6-4), Luke Carter (6-1) and Jeff Mattocks (6-2) can dominate in the paint but speed could be an issue for Saegertown. The Panthers will have to change their style to play more halfcourt basketball but they can be a hard team to guard underneath the hoop. Pavlilk and Rigby have deferred to the older players the past two years, but coach Greg Molnar is looking for more of a proactive approach from both this winter. Mondi could be the biggest key this season after missing 13 games last year with injury. He has the potential to be an all-region player for the Panthers. Saegertown only four games last year, but all four were in region play. The Panthers could be the team to beat in the region but Cambridge Springs and Maplewood will be contenders as well.

Coach (season, record): Steve Scott (26th season, 482-168)
2010-11 overall record: 20-3
2010-11 region record (place): 11-1 (co-champion)
2010-11 playoff results: Lost 39-33 to Farrell in the District 10 Class A semifinals.
Top players lost: Katie Jeannerett, Sadie Brunot
Top returning players: Malorie Levis, Arianna Hanley, Katie Kapanick, Rachel DiBartolomeo
Assistant coaches: Amanda Scott, Jonelle Taylor
Outlook: Saegertown will be a different team this season with the loss of Katie Jeannerett and Sadie Brunot to graduation. The Panthers will be inexperienced with only two starters back and long-time coach Steve Scott will be looking for some players to step up as scorers. Malorie Levis is a strong center that averaged 10 points per game last season, while Arianna Hanley saw playing time with the varsity last year. Juniors Katie Kapanick and Rachel DiBartolomeo could be big-time contributors as well. Saegertown’s ability to score consistently is a question mark this year along with depth. The Panthers were region co-champions last year but they will have to put in plenty of work during camp to get back to that level of basketball.
