Saegertown Panthers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Greg Molnar (5th season, 34-58)
2011-12 overall record: 12-13
2011-12 region record (place): 7-1
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Sharpsville 48-33 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals before losing to Mercyhurst Prep 70-24 in the semifinals. Saegertown then lost to Lakeview 73-57 in the third-place game.
Top players lost: Matt Mondi, Theo Truitt, Noah Marvin
Top returning players: Dustin Pavlik, Austin Scere, Shane Rigby, Jeff Mattocks, Luke Carter, Mitch Wood, Kyle Wise
Assistant coaches: Tom Reynolds, Todd Schlosser, Terry Deane, Steve Simcheck, Jason Amy
Outlook: Saegertown was a little surprising last winter as the Panthers made a solid run into the postseason and even knocked off perennial playoff team Sharpsville in the first round. Saegertown coach Greg Molnar is looking for more this year with an experienced group back. Molnar, who is also the athletic director at Saegertown, loaded the Panthers’ schedule with tough non-region opponents. Saegertown will start the season in the Fairview tournament where they could see General McLane or Hickory. The Panthers also get Union, Reynolds and will be in the Neshannock tournament as well. Saegertown will have to replace Matt Mondi, Theo Truitt and Noah Marvin. Mondi, a second-team all-region selection, averaged 7.1 points per game last year, and leaves a big hole to fill. Saegertown has plenty of size this year and will have to play to that strength this year. The Panthers return Dustin Pavlik, Austin Scere, Shane Rigby, Jeff Mattocks, Luke Carter, Mitch Wood and Kyle Wise. Wise will be out until December after a late-season football injury, while Carter will be out until January. Carter was voted to the second team last year and leaves a big hole at forward. Pavlik is the top returning scorer at 9.8 points per game and was voted to the all-region first team last season, while Mattocks was a second-team selection. There won’t be a surprised with Saegertown this season. The Panthers have size and big-time rebounding ability. Saegertown will need some help from its guards and to play smart basketball to get back to the postseason and get into the state playoffs.

Girls
Coach (season): Steve Scott (27th season)
2011-12 overall record: 17-9
2011-12 region record (place): 9-3 (tied for second)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Farrell 31-24 in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals before losing to Conneaut Valley 31-28 in the semifinals. Saegertown then defeated Linesville 65-63 in overtime in the third-place game. Saegertown made the PIAA playoffs but lost to Bishop Guilfoyle 45-18 in the first round.
Top player lost: Malorie Levis
Top returning players: Arianna Hanley, Rachel DiBartolomeo, Katie Kapanick
Assistant coaches: Amanda Scott, Jonelle Taylor
Outlook: Saegertown put together a solid run last year that resulted in the PIAA Class A playoffs. The Panthers have an experienced team back that could result in another playoff run. Saegertown will have to replace all-region first-team selection Malorie Levis. She was a leader for the Panthers last year and her offensive production will have to be replaced. Arianna Hanley, Rachel DiBartolomeo and Katie Kapanick are returning starters. DiBartolomeo was voted to the second team as a junior and could step into a leadership role to replace Levis. The Panthers have quickness and experience but a lack of size could hurt them in the long run. If Saegertown can keep developing as a team and have a few forwards emerge, the Panthers could be a threat to the Erie County powers to win D-10.

Rocky Grove Orioles
Boys
Coach (season, record): Steve Cutchall (8th season, 118-61)
2011-12 overall record: 7-15
2011-12 region record (place): 4-6 (fourth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Christian Schiffer, Shawn Kennemuth, Nathan Stewart, Shawn Wise
Top returning players: None
Assistant coaches: Ben Barrett, Jason Grill, Travis Barkerk, Jeff Davis
Outlook: Rocky Grove will look to start over and rebuild this year with a young team. The Orioles graduated most of their top players, including Christian Schiffer, Shawn Kennemuth, Nathan Stewart and Shawn Wise. Schiffer was voted to the all-region second team and finished with more than 1,000 career points. Rocky Grove missed out on the playoffs last year but if the Orioles develop their younger players, the postseason could be a possibility. Breck Schneider is back after seeing some playing time on the varsity level and could step into a leadership role this winter. Rocky Grove could also see a great deal of contributions from its freshman class, which has the potential to put the Orioles back in the playoffs over the next few years.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Todd Wetjen (1st season at Rocky Grove, 12th season overall, 207-77)
2011-12 overall record: 7-15
2011-12 region record (place): 1-9 (tied for fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Katlyn Bell, Haley Nerlich
Top returning players: Amber Nerlich, Aleece Schiffer
Assistant coaches: Marvin Welker, Natalie Keith, Saddie Gravatt, Shannon Morrow
Outlook: Rocky Grove landed an experienced coach in Todd Wetjen in the offseason. Wetjen has more than 200 career wins and two District 10 championships with Franklin. The Orioles graduated Katlyn Bell and Haley Nerlich but everyone else is back. Amber Nerlich scored 12 points per game last winter and Aleece Schiffer scored 9 ppg. Both are returning starters along with Brianna Bevier and Natasha Lepley. Rocky Grove could also receive big contributions from new players Karyn Holden, Lauren Swatzler, Alexa Larson and Miranda Coxson. The Orioles have speed and quickness with a guard-heavy roster but their size could be an issue as well as depth. Wetjen commented that defense and rebounding will be key this season along with taking care of the basketball and good shot selection. If the Orioles buy into a new system and a new coach, they could be an interesting team this winter.

Reynolds Raiders
Boys
Coach (season, record): Dan Kilgore (2nd season, 10-11)
2011-12 overall record: 10-11
2011-12 region record (place): 3-7 (fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Caleb Peters, Tanner Greenfield
Top returning players: Paul Torok, Cory Woods, Garhett Frable
Assistant coaches: Seth Little, Brandon Weaver
Outlook: Reynolds saw success under first-year coach Dan Kilgore with 10 wins but the Raiders will have plenty of holes to fill if they want to improve this year. Reynolds graduated eight players, including starters Caleb Peters and Tanner Greenfield. The Raiders will be short on experience this year but they could build throughout the season. Senior guard Paul Torok is back along with junior guard Cory Woods. Both are returning starters as well as sophomore forward Garhett Frable. The Raiders put in plenty of work in the offseason and could receive big contributions from junior forward Kyle McConnell, who had a big year with the junior varsity last year. Reynolds is in a tough region that is bolstered by the addition of West Middlesex. The Raiders will need immediate contributions from the younger players in the program to get above .500 this season.

Oil City Oilers
Boys
Coach (season): Mark Cochran (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 6-16
2011-12 region record (place): 3-13 (eighth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Nate Davis, Jeff Zimoski, Blake Hadley, Steve McCauley, Dan Yarnell
Top returning players: Andrew Williams, Logan Way, Evan Carll, Hunter French
Assistant coaches: Keith Fulmer, Nick Woods, Chris Delmonaco
Outlook: Oil City will look to go in a new direction with a new head coach in Mark Cochran. The Oilers struggled last season in a brutal region and will need to buy into a new system to find some success this year. Oil City graduated Nate Davis, Jeff Zimoski, Blake Hadley, Steve McCauley and Dan Yarnell. All five were contributors last season and leave big holes to fill. The Oilers return Andrew Williams, Logan Way, Evan Carll and Hunter French. Williams and Way started last year while Carll and French could step into starting roles this winter. Devon Geib, Cullen Flaherty, Frank Serbati and Calib Coburn are young players who could also step into playing time this year on the varsity level. Oil City is athletic, hardworking and has strong guard play but size and rebounding could be huge issues along with inexperience. The Oilers are in one of the toughest regions in District 10 and they will need to come together quickly to not only survive region play but to make strides and win some games.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Paul Flickner (3rd season, 5-39)
2011-12 overall record: 4-18
2011-12 region record (place): 1-11 (tied for sixth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top player lost: Chelsea Hall
Top returning players: Weslee Clyde, Michaela Bernecky, Carlee Wenner, Stephanie Stevenson, Erin Wilfong, Miranda Williams, Kayleigh Serafin, Riley Davis, Susan Parsons, Shania Kulling
Assistant coaches: Autumn Witt, Sam Knight, Jessica Warner, John Davis, Jodi Gault, Katie Wenner
Outlook: Oil City improved last winter after winning only one game two years ago. The Oilers starting buying into coach Paul Flickner’s system and started to see some results. Oil City will need to replace all-region second team selection Chelsea Hall. She graduated in the spring after leading the Oilers in 3-pointers last year. Oil City returns starters in Weslee Clyde, Carlee Wenner, Stephanie Stevenson, Erin Wilfong and Riley Davis along with contributors Michaela Bernecky, Miranda Williams, Kayleigh Serafin, Susan Parson and Shani Kulling. The Oilers could also receive contributions from younger players Jen Stevenson, Sarah McCauley, Lena Carll and Lexi Scannell. Oil City has plenty of experience this year and has improved at both ends of the floor. The Oilers have to cut down on turnovers and make smarter decisions. Oil City is in a tough region with Franklin and Hickory and confidence will be key. The Oilers could run into some tough nights but if they use their experience and chemistry, they could be in the conversation for a playoff spot.

Northwestern Wildcats
Boys
Coach (season): Mike Coletta (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 11-11
2011-12 region record (place): 5-5 (tied for third)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Fairview 48-41 in a District 10 Class AA play-in game.
Top players lost: Jon Cook, Aaron Morley, Josh Niedermeyer
Top returning players: Kyle McKeen, Grant Panko
Assistant coaches: Zane Meeder, Pat LaFuria, Guy Shinko
Outlook: Northwestern made strides last winter by making the postseason. New head coach Mike Coletta is looking to take the Wildcats a step further and contend for the District 10 championship. Coletta spent the past five years learning from coach Tom Pyle at North East and is looking to make a splash right away. The Wildcats have some holes to fill with the graduation of John Cook, Aaron Morley and Josh Niedermeyer. Cook was voted to the all-region second team last year, while Morley and Niedermeyer were big-time contributors as well. The Wildcats have some experience back in standouts Kyle McKeen and Grant Panko and Northwestern could also receive contributions from sophomore Corey Shinko. The Wildcats won’t be short on guards and speed this season but size and experience could be issues. Northwestern could be more a of a run-and-gun team to make up for the lack of height and the Wildcats will need to battle on the boards as well. Northwestern is in a wide-open class in Class AA and if the Wildcats buy into a new system and develop some younger players, they could be in the mix for the region and district titles.

Coach (season): Karen Sewell (6th season)
2011-12 overall record: 10-12
2011-12 region record (place): 6-8 (fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Haley Schaef, Izzy McKean, Megan Alward
Top returning players: Carolyn Kaufer, Cassidy Taylor, Brittany McLaughlin
Assistant coaches: Steve Sawin, Carla McKenna, John Shade
Outlook: Northwestern just missed out on the playoffs last year and will need to replace some key players to make a run at the postseason this winter. The Wildcats graduated leading scorer Haley Schaef, leading rebounder Izzy McKean and Megan Alward, who paced Northwestern in steals last year. The Wildcats returns two starters in Teresa Wheeler and Katie Shade along with senior leaders Carolyn Kaufer, Cassidy Taylor and Brittany McLaughlin. The returning group could receive big contributions from freshmen Sara Morini and Meghan Yearwood. Northwestern has a lot of quick guards and could keep up with the region powers up and down the floor. A big issue could be size underneath the hoop. The Wildcats have the ability to hang with their region opponents but building chemistry and coming together as a team will determine if Northwestern is contending for the postseason or missing out this winter.

North East Grapepickers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Tom Pyle (25th season, 326-274)
2011-12 overall record: 19-7
2011-12 region record (place): 8-2 (second)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Cambridge Springs 52-33 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals and Lakeview 41-40 in the semifinals. North East lost to Mercyhurst Prep 41-30 in the District 10 Class AA championship. North East then lost to Greensburg Central Catholic 46-42 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Cory Bailey, Tyler Johnson, Josh Kitchen, Vince Coletta, Tyler Davis
Top returning players: Blake Bentley, Dawson Scotch, Rocky Owens
Assistant coaches: Shawn Humes, Dave Mazza, Spencer Cornelius, Dave Snippert, Steven Righi, Curtis Bailey
Outlook: North East could be a huge question mark this season. The Grapepickers graduated all five starters and will need to rebuild right away. Cory Bailey scored 15 points per game and leaves a big hole in leadership. He was voted to the all-region first team and the Region 5 Player of the Year. Tyler Johnson was also voted to the first team after scoring 10 points per game. Josh Kitchen, Vincen Coletta and Tyler Davis round out the players lost for the ‘Pickers. North East has some experience back and will need several new players to step into major roles. Seniors Blake Bentley, Dawson Scotch and Rocky Owens are back and could emerge as leaders to a young team. The ‘Pickers could also receive contributions from Jon Newara, Joe Neff, Nick Wisniewski, Stanley Chwatek, Brendon Tinko and Mike Macauley. North East has a strong program and that could lead to a year of reloading instead of rebuilding. Coach Tom Pyle went over 300 wins last year and could face one of his biggest challenges in having North East contend this winter. The ‘Pickers have emerging standouts in other sports with the program and by the time February rolls around, North East might have it figured out in time for the playoffs.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Terry Frontino (4th season, 55-20)
2011-12 overall record: 15-8
2011-12 region record (place): 10-4 (third)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Franklin 61-34 in the District 10 Class AAA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: None
Top returning players: Alex Artise, Alexis Bowen, Madi Turiczek, Tori Prather, Leah Kowalewski
Assistant coaches: Dawn Turiczek, Abbey Stadler, Dave Zamperini
Outlook: North East could be a team to beat this season. The Grapepickers not only return everyone from last year’s team, they moved down to Class AA, which no longer includes Villa Maria. Alex Artise, a first-team all-region selection that is already over 1,000 points, has a chance at the school scoring record of 1,315 points. Alexis Bowen, another all-region selection, returns as well and has 619 points to be within range of becoming the 10th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Also returning in the starting lineup are seniors Madi Turiczek, Tori Prather and Leah Kowalewski. Fellow senior Anne Lewis is back after being affected by a hip injury last year, while Ashley Bogart, Danielle Barnes, Breanna Klenz and Allie Maas could be big-time contributors as well. North East has an experience team that is unselfish and very athletic. The ‘Pickers will have to deal with Girard and General McLane in region play and their games against both teams will be a strong indication of which team could win D-10. On paper, North East looks like the team to beat and if the ‘Pickers continue to grow and play together, they could be playing basketball well into March.

Mercer Mustangs
Boys
Coach (season, record): Doug Schmid (4th season, 15-51)
2011-12 overall record: 6-16
2011-12 region record (place): 2-8 (sixth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Billy Selders, Paul McCullough
Top returning players: Logan Clarke, Viktor Rymniak, Nate Guiler
Assistant coaches: Dan Weikal, Allen Kroll, Justin Glass
Outlook: Mercer is still looking to build its program in a tough Mercer County region. The Mustangs will have to replace Billy Selders and Paul McCullough, who graduated in the spring. Mercer has an emerging standout in Logan Clarke, a sophomore guard who led the Mustangs in scoring last year. Viktor Rymniak is also back along with Nate Guiler. Rymniak provides senior leadership and averaged 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last year, while Guiler, a junior, had 9.2 ppg. The Mustangs could also receive big contributions from 6-6 senior Evan Nan. Mercer will need to start stringing together region wins to get back into the postseason mix this winter.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Aaron Cook (2nd season, 6-16)
2011-12 overall record: 6-16
2011-12 region record (place): 4-8 (fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: None
Top returning players: Analise Whenry, Ashley Ryder, Lexie Arkwright, Megan McKinney, Alexis Mills, Adelyn Cook
Assistant coaches: Crystal Angermeier, Amber Whenry, Dan Weikal
Outlook: Mercer could sneak up on a few teams this year in the Region 2 standings. The Mustangs return everyone from last year’s team, which won six games. Mercer will be loaded with talent, incuding the return of Analise Whenry, Ashley Ryder, Lexie Arkwright, Megan McKinney, Alexis Mills and Adelyn Cook. Whenry and Ryder are senior forwards, while Arkwright, McKinney and Mills are returning juniors. Cook provides depth as a sophomore and could work her way into plenty of varsity minutes as the season goes on. Mercer has experience, speed and athleticism but height could be an issue. The Mustangs can overcome their height disadvantage with smart basketball and if it can develop more depth, Mercer could be in the hunt for the playoff spot in February.

Meadville Bulldogs
Boys
Coach (season, record): Norm Price (24th season, 397-204)
2011-12 overall record: 16-7
2011-12 region record (place): 11-5 (tied for second)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Girard 44-37 in a District 10 Class AAA play-in game.
Top player lost: Fred Epps
Top returning players: Artrel Foster, Donte Hollingsworth, Zak Price, Trevor Clune, Jacob Gregor
Assistant coaches: Todd Pearson, Chuck Jones
Outlook: If there was one team in Class AAA that could match Hickory’s experience, it would definitely be Meadville. The Bulldogs return all five starters and will only have to replace Fred Epps, who graduated. Seniors Artrel Foster, Donte Hollingsworth, Zak Price and Trevor Clune are back along with junior Jacob Gregor. Foster averaged 11 points per game as a junior to be voted to the all-region second team along with Price, who scored 13 points per game. The experienced group could be bolstered by 6-4 freshman Jason Clune, 5-10 senior Phil Mottillo and 5-8 senior Marlon McCoy. The three will be crucial in helping the starting lineup get breaks and in case any of the five get into foul trouble. Foster (677 points), Hollingsworth (592) and Price (575) could all reach 1,000 points for Meadville this season. Region 5 is brutal, once again, with talented southern teams and it is only bolstered by George Junior replacing Titusville. Much like last year, it is unlikely any team will go unbeaten in region play but the team to survive the region schedule will be formidable in the D-10 playoffs. Meadville will need several big wins to stay near the top of the region, including two showdowns with Hickory.

Coach (season): Casey Heller (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 8-14
2011-12 region record (place): 4-8 (fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Chaykala Lindsey, DaQueisha Epps
Top returning players: Shauntia Vactor-Pope, Katie DeWalt, Cadi McCoy
Assistant coaches: Chuck Walker, Tony Boca
Outlook: Meadville will start over with former Bulldog star Casey Heller. She is only a few years out of Edinboro but Heller is hungry to turn Meadville’s program around. The Bulldogs missed out on the playoffs last year but they have enough talent back to contend for a playoff spot. Meadville graduated Chaykala Lindsey and DaQueisha Epps but return three starters in Shauntia Vactor-Pope, Katie DeWalt and Cadi McCoy. Vactor-Pope and DeWalt bring in senior experience, while McCoy is a talented junior forward. The three will be important in leading a young Bulldogs team. Meadville has a few younger players that could earn playing time in camp as Heller searches for more size to complement her returning starters. The Bulldogs will have a tough road in region play this season. Franklin and Hickory are loaded while Grove City and Slippery Rock are never easy wins either. Meadville will need to buy into a new system with new players right away to return to the postseason.

McDowell Trojans
Boys
Coach (season, record): Kevin O’Connor (1st season at McDowell, 4th season overall, 21-45)
2011-12 overall record: 11-12
2011-12 region record (place): 2-4 (third)
2011-12 playoff results: Lost to Strong Vincent 63-36 in the District 10 Class AAAA semifinals.
Top player lost: Luke Nientimp
Top returning players: Carson Lewis, Michael Beck, Dalton Grafius, Josh Santillan, James Conner
Assistant coaches: Justin Izbicki, Cliff Beck, Jason Keim, Mychael Molnar, Mark Becker
Outlook: If there is one team to keep an eye on this year, it will be McDowell. Kevin O’Connor takes over the program this year and brings enthusiasm and a style of play that could translate into plenty of wins on the Class AAAA level. O’Connor was in the process of turning Fort LeBoeuf around when the opportunity arose at McDowell. The Trojans will have a similar look to their roster but the style of play could completely change to a run and gun philosophy. McDowell lost only Luke Nientimp to graduation and has seen participation increase heavily since O’Connor’s hire. Senior Carson Lewis is back to lead the offense after being voted to the all-region second team last year. Juniors Michael Beck and Dalton Grafius could make up one of the toughest scoring combinations in the area, while Josh Santillan could start as well. James Conner, a Pitt recruit in football, could play this season after not playing last year. He would bring a big-time presence in the paint and lots of speed for the Trojans. Andy Stromenger, Matt Hansen, Quinn Lewis, Jake Tarasovitch, Matt Orenick and Max Kerr could all be in the mix for playing time this year. Senior Jake Wolf could be in the starting lineup and provides leadership for the Trojans. Hansen and Tarasovitch’s speed could translate into playing time for both. McDowell has plenty of experience but buying into a new, up-tempo system will be key. With so many athletes, McDowell could turn to the style of Class AAAA WPIAL powers that sub in three, four or five at a time to keep the tempo up. Cathedral Prep is the obvious favorite in the region and district but McDowell could be right with the Ramblers at the end of the season.

Girls
Coach (season): Megan Fiala (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 17-7
2011-12 region record (place): 6-0 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Central Tech 56-18 to win the District 10 Class AAAA championship. McDowell then lost to Upper St. Clair 57-42 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Kaitlyn Fromknecht, Fallon Cosgrove, Taylor Lindquist, Maddie Miller, Nicole DiLuzio, Courtney McManigle
Top returning players: Hailey Wilwohl, Bri Krysiak
Assistant coaches: Rand Garrity, Tori Hansen, Elisha Pancoast
Outlook: McDowell will look almost brand new this season. Megan Fiala takes over the program as head coach the Trojans graduated six of their top nine players. Kaitlyn Fromknecht, Fallon Cosgrove, Taylor Lindquist, Maddie Miller, Nicole DiLuzio and Courtney McManigle are gone to graduation and each of the six leaves a big hole to fill. Fromknecht, the Region 7 Player of the Year, along with Lindquist, Miller and Cosgrove were voted to the all-region first team as seniors. The group won several District 10 Class AAAA championships together and leave McDowell with almost no experience back this year. The Trojans could rely heavily on senior Hailey Wilwohl. She was voted to the all-region second team as a junior and saw plenty of varsity minutes last year. She will look to step up as a leader at the point guard position, while Angela Aronica, Bri Krysiak and Caryn Kopay are also back. Both saw some playing time on the varsity level last year. Fiala commented that she has a solid group to work with this year which has plenty of potential. The Trojans have put in plenty of work in the offseason and they could be a surprise team despite the severe lack of experience. McDowell should be able to survive in a down region and could repeat as the D-10 Class AAAA champion. The Trojans’ success beyond that point will come down to how quickly the younger players adjust to their amplified roles on the varsity level.

Maplewood Tigers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Jeremy Peterson (3rd season, 12-32)
2011-12 overall record: 7-15
2011-12 region record (place): 4-4 (third)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Michael Davis, Camron Kramer
Top returning players: Justin Dahl, Logan Battin, Josh Lake
Assistant coach: Dave Gjovik
Outlook: Maplewood has steadily improved under third-year coach Jeremy Peterson and will look to reach the .500 mark this year. The Tigers won five games in Peterson’s first year and seven last winter. Maplewood will have to replace all-region second-team selections Michael Davis and Camron Kramer. The two leave big holes in the starting lineup and their production needs to be replaced. Senior guards Justin Dahl and Josh Lake are back along with senior forward Logan Battin. Dahl and Battin started last year while all three seniors will see a lot of minutes this winter. Alex Bakus and Miller Peters could be big-time contributors as well. The Tigers have plenty of speed this year but experience could be a tough obstacle to overcome. As the season goes on, if Maplewood can overcome the experience and youth factors, the Tigers could surprise a few teams along the way.

2011-12 overall record: 3-19
2011-12 region record (place): 3-11 (seventh)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Mary Fultz, Ashley Myers
Top returning players: Emily Merritt, Ashley Miller, Elizabeth Miller, Madalyn Nicols, Taylor Smith
Assistant coaches: Kevin Turner, Kelly Onderko
Outlook: Maplewood is looking to remain as healthy as it can this year. The Tigers aren’t off to a good start as returning player Ashley Myers is out for the year with an injury. The Tigers also lost Mary Fultz to graduation and will need to replace both players in camp. Senior point guard Emily Merritt is back along with returning starters Ashley Miller and Elizabeth Miller. Both are senior forwards back for one final season, while senior Taylor Smith and sophomore Madalyn Nichols return as well. An indirect advantage coming from injuries last year is the experience more players gained. Maplewood had 11 players letter and will have depth this year as a result. Seniors Kendra Turner, Kaylee Krepps and Molly Bernoski could contribute along with sophomore Brooke Battin. Maplewood has shifted to a competitive region and confidence could be the Tigers’ biggest issue. After so many injuries last year, staying healthy and competing each night will be the keys to Maplewood’s success.

Lakeview Sailors
Boys
Coach (season, record): Gary Burke (13th season, 182-112)
2011-12 overall record: 19-7
2011-12 region record (place): 9-1 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Fairview 33-30 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals before losing to North East 41-40 in the semifinals. Lakeview the defeated Saegertown 73-57 in the third-place game. The Sailors lost to Beaver Falls 69-37 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top player lost: Derek Giovengo
Top returning players: Dalton Boggs, Coty Gander, Casey Greggs
Assistant coaches: Larry Boggs, Kevin Persch, Dale Walker, Jay Carlson, Bill Beith, Steve Aden, Bobby Urey
Outlook: Lakeview had its heart broken in the D-10 semifinals last year after a few final-minute free throws ended its run at a D-10 championship. The Sailors rebounded to make the PIAA playoffs and are back for more this year. Lakeview returns an experienced group that is only missing graduate Derek Giovengo, who averaged 5.6 points per game last year to be voted to the all-region second team. Seniors Casey Greggs and Dalton Boggs were voted to the all-region first team as juniors, while Coty Gander was voted to the second team. Greggs was also named the Region 2 Player of the Year. Boggs averaged 12.4 ppg last year, while Greggs scored 14.9 ppg and Gander has 11.5 ppg. Zach Van Dusen and Brandon Rice could fill out the starting lineup. Van Dusen brings experience from last year while Rice, a 6-2 junior, is a big and strong post player that could add to the team right away. The Sailors used a 6-man rotation last winter but could expand to a 9-man rotation this year. Lakeview won’t have to go too far to see where it stands in D-10. West Middlesex bumped up from Class A and is an instant favorite to win the D-10 title. The Sailors will get two shots at the Big Reds in region play but don’t be surprised if the two teams meet up for the D-10 championship in late February.

Girls
Coach (season): Jodi Seddon (1st season)
2011-12 overall record: 2-20
2011-12 region record (place): 0-12 (seventh)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Brynn King, Kylie Custer, Cassie Legal
Top returning players: Casey Stringer, Chelsea Davis, Steph Adams, Sami Scott, Alex Ruedigar, Rachel McKean, Samantha Riddle, Mariah Kasbee, Marla Holland
Assistant coaches: Tammy Rose, Marie Kohr, Cindy Troy
Outlook: Lakeview is starting over with a new coach and a new system. Jodi Seddon, a former player at Lakeview, Gannon and Thiel, brings a fresh approach with a new system. The Sailors won only two games last year and has to find a way to string together games this year. Lakeview graduated Brynn King, Kylie Custer and Cassie Legal with five returning seniors. The five include Casey Stringer, Chelsea Davis, Steph Adams, Sami Scott and Alex Ruedigar – all guards – along with four juniors in Rachel McKean, Samantha Riddle, Mariah Kasbee and Marla Holland. The nine upperclassmen will need to build chemistry and figure out a solid rotation for the Sailors to become competitive. The height and size Lakeview needs could come from the sophomore class, while several freshman could complete for playing time as well. It may take a few weeks for the Sailors to develop some chemistry but if they buy into Seddon’s system, Lakeview could be an interesting team this winter.

Kennedy Catholic Golden Eagles
Boys
Coach (season, record): Rick Mancino (4th season, 45-24)
2011-12 overall record: 16-10
2011-12 region record (place): 7-3 (tied for second)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Cochranton 50-28 in the District 10 Class A semifinals before losing to West Middlesex 41-38 in overtime in the D-10 championship. Kennedy then defeated Cornell 64-53 in the first round before losing to Ridgway 73-50 in the second round.
Top player lost: Kenny Fill
Top returning players: Mac Hartman, Jeff Thompkins, Jimmie D’Onofrio, Gerald Zachar, Brennan Wassil
Assistant coaches: Corey Djakovich, Brian Hoover, John Heutsche
Outlook: Kennedy Catholic came within one overtime period of winning another District 10 championship in its storied program history. The Golden Eagles look like an instant favorite to win D-10 this year with the departure of West Middlesex to Class AA and an experienced and talented team returning. Kennedy will have to replace Kenny Fill, the Region 1 Player of the Year and an all-region first-team selection. The Golden Eagles return Mac Hartman, Jeff Thompkins, Jimmie D’Onofrio, Gerald Zachar and Brennan Wassil, who could make up the starting lineup this year. Hartman was Kennedy’s leading scorer and rebounder last year to be voted to the all-region first team. Thompkins, another experienced senior, could step up as a big-time scorer after being voted to the second team. Wassil could be the ‘X’ factor this year at 6-5. He brings size to Kennedy to complement Hartman, who is 6-6. Juniors Sam Crow, Gavin Cianci, Matt Hurton and Jake Feeney are back along with sophomores Aubrey Jennings and Jake Leipheimer. Jennings could compete for a starting spot in camp. Arlene Brewer is a transfer from Farrell that could contribute along with juniors Chris James and Jamie Hook. Coach Rick Mancino commented that this year’s team could be the most athletic team he’s had at Kennedy, which also has size and depth. The Golden Eagles’ only problem could be coming together as a team and building chemistry. Kennedy loaded its schedule up with talented teams, including West Middlesex, Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Ohio powers Ursuline and Cardinal Mooney. If nothing else, the Golden Eagles will be battle-tested by the time the D-10 playoffs roll around. The D-10 playoffs may only be a formality for the loaded Golden Eagles, who could aspire to a trip to Hershey.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Tom Burns (6th season, 90-35)
2011-12 overall record: 22-4
2011-12 region record (place): 10-0 (champion)
2011-12 playoff results: Defeated Linesville 79-48 and Conneaut Valley 56-21 to win the District 10 Class A championship. Kennedy then defeated Riverview 59-30 in the first round of the PIAA playoffs and Clarion 59-43 in the second round. Kennedy lost to Vincentian Academy 56-51 in the quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Marina Wareham, Angelene Rapone
Top returning players: Rachel Burns, Alex Ricketts, Courtney Sargent, Rebekah Kish, Taylor Hood
Assistant coaches: Sarah Hurl, Tiffany Kress
Outlook: Kennedy Catholic rolled to the District 10 Class A championship last year and the Golden Eagles looked primed for another title. Kennedy has to replace 1,000-point scorer Marina Wareham and Angelene Rapone. Wareham was voted to the all-region first team last winter and the Region 1 Player of the Year. The two leave big holes this year for coach Tom Burns to fill in. Kennedy does have a strong, experienced group back. Rachel Burns, Alex Ricketts, Courtney Sargent, Rebekah Kish and Taylor Hood are back and could fill out the starting lineup, while sophomore transfer Tatum Kress could contributed right away. Ricketts, an Akron recruit, was voted to the all-region first team last year along with Rachel Burns, who is coming off a knee injury sustained in the playoffs. Those two along with Kish and Hood will handle guard duties, while Sargent will start at center. Rachel Burns and Ricketts will both go over 1,000 career points this winter. Kennedy has plenty of experience but Tom Burns is quick to point out how tall his team is. The starting lineup measures at 6-3, 6-1, 5-11, 5-10 and 5-7. The Golden Eagles could also receive big efforts from 5-8 freshman Reagan O’Brien and 6-3 freshman April Bocian. Kennedy looks like a very strong favorite in D-10 with aspirations for a deep PIAA playoff run as well.
