Shannon Regan

The General McLane girls soccer team graduated six senior starters in the spring but returning all-star Shannon Regan has picked the Lancers up in a leadership role.

Regan, who was voted to the all-region second team as a junior, leads McLane in scoring this fall with 13 goals and nine assists, including three goals and four assists in an 8-1 win over Girard.

On Tuesday, she scored twice in a key 7-1 win over Cambridge Springs and has emerged as a big-time scoring threat for the Lancers this fall.

General McLane Lancers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Josh Hopkins (3rd season, 23-12-5)
2011 overall record: 13-6-2
2011 region record (place): 9-1-2 (champion)
2011 playoff results: Defeated Grove City 1-0 and Slippery Rock 1-0 to win the District 10 Class AA championship. General McLane then lost to South Park 2-1 in overtime in the first round of the PIAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Peter Keim, Dan McCallion, Andre Kroemer, Dan McClune
Top returning players: Zack Benedict, Kirk Dillen, Parker McDermott, Bryan Olson, Connor Scully
Assistant coach: Dan Young
Outlook: General McLane put together a terrific 2011 season to win its third District 10 championship in program history. The Lancers will look to avoild rebuilding this year after losing 12 seniors to graduation. Among those graduates are Peter Keim, Dan McCallion, Andre Kroemer and Dan McClune. Keim, an all-district selection, was voted the Region 5 Player of the Year and to the all-region first team on offense. He finished with 20 goals and five assists last fall. McCallion and Kroemer were defensive specialists last year. McCallion was voted to the all-region second team. McClune scored twice last season and a high-energy player for the Lancers. McLane will have some experience back to lead the underclassmen. Zack Benedict, Kirk Dillen, Parker McDermott, Bryan Olson and Connor Scully were impact players last fall and could be leaders this year. Benedict was a first-team selection on offense last fall after scoring six goals and collecting three assists. Dillen (goalkeeper) and McDermott (defense) were second-team picks. Dillen had a 1.24 GAA and made 150 saves as a junior. Olson (offense) and Scully (defense) are returning starters from last year. McLane could have a solid future as coach Josh Hopkins reports that the Lancers have a large freshman class coming in with 15-18 players interested in soccer. McLane will have to battle this year to repeat as region and district champions this fall. With massive graduation losses, the Lancers will need several new players to step up this year.

Girls
Coach (season): Maura White (7th season)
2011 overall record: 11-6-2
2011 region record (place): 7-3-2 (second)
2011 playoff results: Lost to Hickory 5-0 in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Becca Albert, Leanne Schaefer, Sydney Ericson, T.L. Wreh-Wilson
Top returning players: Shannon Regan, Lexie Perka, Laura Schaefer, Claire Pilewski
Outlook: General McLane broke through and made the District 10 Class AA playoffs last fall. The Lancers will need to reload quickly to get back to the postseason. McLane lost six starters to graduation, including standouts Becca Albert, Leanne Schaefer, Sydney Ericson and T.L. Wreh-Wilson. Albert was an all-region first-team selection offense, while Ericson made the first team on defense. Schaefer (offense) and Wreh-Wilson (defense) were all-region, second-team picks. The Lancers have some experience back to turn to. Shannon Regan, an all-region second-team selection, is back to lead a young offense, while first-team defender Lexi Perka returns as well. McLane has several up-and-coming players, including sophomore Laura Schaefer. She stepped up in a big way last year to be voted to the first team on offense. Senior Claire Pilewski made strides last year and could be a big-time contributor as well. The Lancers have experience back but six seniors loss to graduation will be tough for McLane to deal with early on. With strong underclassmen in the program, building chemistry in camp will be important this year. The Lancers have to deal with rival Harbor Creek against this season along with Cambridge Springs, which moves up to AA after a successful 2011 season in Class A. McLane has the ability to return to the playoffs but it will be to the Lancers to realize that potential.

General McLane Lancers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Josh Hopkins (2nd season, 10-8-1)
2010 overall record: 10-8-1
2010 region record (place): 8-4-0 (third)
2010 playoff results: Lost 2-1 in a shootout to Commodore Perry in a District 10 Class AA play-in match.
Top player lost: Collin McAndrew
Top returning players: Dan McCallion, Peter Keim, Zack Benedict, Kirk Dillen, Andrew Kromer
Assistant coach: Dan Young
Outlook: General McLane made strides in 2010, including reaching the 10-win mark, putting together an eight-game unbeaten streak and a District 10 playoff spot. The Lancers lost a heartbreaker in the D-10 playoffs to Commodore Perry in a shootout. McLane lost all-region first team midfielder Collin McAndrew to graduation but the Lancers have plenty of experience coming back. Dan McCallion, Peter Keim and Zack Benedict return after being selected to the all-region team, while goalkeeper Kirk Dillen and Andrew Kromer are back to lead the defense. The Lancers are looking to build off their momentum from last year under coach Josh Hopkins with a goal to return to the D-10 playoffs. McLane is in a brutal region and found that out in the final two weeks of the season. With a region title staring them in the face, the Lancers lost one-goal matches to Central Tech and Fort LeBoeuf to barely miss sharing the region title. McLane has experience, talent and depth this year and will be a handful for Region 5 teams.

2010 region record (place): 8-3-1 (second)
2010 playoff results: Lost 2-1 to Slippery Rock in the District 10 Class AA quarterfinals.
Top player lost: Sara Waldemarson
Top returning players: Becca Albert, Leanna Schaefer, Shannon Regan, Sydney Ericson
Assistant coaches: Claudio Olivieri, Angela Olivieri, Peggy Sansone
Outlook: General McLane continues to compete in a tough Class AA region and with most of last year’s team back, the Lancers are looking to take the next step. McLane made the District 10 playoffs last year but fell to Slippery Rock in the first round. The graduation of Sara Waldemarson leaves a big hole for the Lancers this fall, but all-region first-team selection Becca Albert is back. Leanne Schafer, Shannon Regan and Sydney Ericson are also back after making the second team last year. The Lancers’ biggest problem will be overtaking powerhouse Harbor Creek and holding off Fairview. McLane is primed to make the playoffs once again and could be a threat to Mercyhurst Prep in the postseason.
