If the number of Likes grows to 1,000, we again will randomly choose five current followers and five new followers to receive a set of 2012, 2011 and 2010 Kickoff magazines.

So, if you’ve already Liked us on Facebook, encourage your friends to join you. With each friend that Likes GoErie.com/Varsity, your chances of winning will grow — and so will theirs.

In addition to the Facebook contest, we will provide Varsity Letter subscribers with a chance to win the Kickoff three-pack. Currently, about 900 readers subscribe to the Varsity Letter. We’d like to reach 1,000 subscribers by Aug. 31. When we reach that total, five current Varsity Letter readers and five new subscribers will receive a 2012, 2011 and 2010 Kickoff magazine.

Cathderal Prep's Damion Terry on 2012 Kickoff cover

The first page of the seven-page feature, The City Game.

Today is the kickoff for Kickoff magazine. The 116-page District 10 football preview will be available at all Country Fair locations throughout northwestern Pennsylvania.

All week, we’ve been giving fans a sneak peek at the magazine on the Varsity blog. Today, we’ll look at The City Game, a Kickoff feature that focuses on Erie’s first 125 years of high school football.

The City Game starts on Pages 58 and 59 in the center spread of Kickoff and offers fans seven pages of historical information that they might not know about Erie football. Because of the amount of information involved, The City Game focuses on highlights. Learn about the 1887 Erie High School team that started it all. Read about the violence in the early 1900s that almost led to the end of Erie football (at least temporarily). The City Game also delves into the emergence of new Erie high schools around the 1920s, the impact of World War II, the superstars of the 1950s and 1960s and the state championship seasons of recent years. There’s much more, including a timeline of highlights from schools, teams and players that made Erie history.

The feature is confined to Erie city football. Adding the Erie County League teams would have been too ambitious of a project to contain in the magazine. (We promise that ECL history will get its day in Kickoff.)

This is the third edition of the award-winning Kickoff produced by the Erie Times-News, and we believe you’ll agree that it’s our best. Pick up a Kickoff today for $5 at all area Country Fair stores.

Kickoff magazine gives fans a look at What's New in 2012

Kickoff magazine is expected to be available at all Country Fair locations in Erie County and Crawford County today and then in Country Fair locations throughout northwestern Pennsylvania by Friday.

What is Kickoff? It’s District 10′s most comprehensive high school football season preview. All week, we’re giving fans a sneak peek of the magazine on the Varsity blog. Today, we’ll look at What’s New for football season in 2012.

Page 6 of Kickoff is dedicated to telling fans about the new developments in District 10. What is Kickoff? It’s District 10′s most comprehensive high school football season preview. All week, we’re giving fans a sneak peek of the magazine on the Varsity blog. Today, we’ll look at the Players to Watch pages for 2012.

District 10 has many talented players returning for the 2012 season, as evidenced by the five seniors who already have committed to major colleges for 2013. That list includes Cathedral Prep’s Damion Terry (above on Kickoff cover, Michigan State), General McLane’s Quinn Thompson (Connecticut), Hickory’s DeShawn Coleman (West Virginia), McDowell’s James Conner (Pitt) and Meadville’s Artrel Foster (Temple). Of course, each of the aforementioned is a player to watch for the 2012 season.

Kickoff will give readers a more extensive list of players to keep an eye on in a two-page spread that includes vivid color photos. One of those pages is pictured above.

Central Tech team page

The 2012 Kickoff magazine will be available by the end of this week at all northwestern Pennsylvania Country Fair locations. (Readers might see it in some stores as early as today.)

What is Kickoff? It’s District 10′s most comprehensive high school football season preview.

All week, we’ll be giving fans a sneak peek of Kickoff on the Varsity blog. Today, we’ll look at the team preview pages.

Each District 10 team will have its own preview. (Above is a Central Tech team page.) The team preview pages feature a football card of a premier player, the team’s schedule, a look at the offense, defense and an overall outlook. (All Erie County teams feature an extra page of preview information.) Fans can see a list of potential returning players from 2011 — final 2012 rosters for a large majority of teams are not available from coaches until next week. We also provide 2011 results and team leaders, a 10-year rundown of team records and many photos of key players.

This is the third edition of Kickoff produced by the Erie Times-News, and we believe it’s our best. Fans can get 116 pages packed with information, feature stories and color photos, and it will be available for $5 by Friday at all area Country Fair stores.
