Heather Sternby

Meadville junior Heather Sternby is not only looking to repeat as a District 10 champion, she wants more swimming titles this winter.

In a dominant effort against Central Tech, Sternby won the 50 free (26.01 seconds) and the 100 butterfly (1:06.69) before swimming on the winning 200 medley (2:04.36) and 400 free (4:06.40) relay teams.

Sternby won the D-10 Class AAA championship in the 100 butterfly last winter and racked up three silver medals as well.

With plenty of Class AAA experience, Sternby is a threat to win multiple D-10 titles in a few weeks.

Here’s a look at Erie County’s top Class AAA swimming and diving performances reported to the Erie Times-News this season.

The following list is not intended to be the definitive times of all Erie County performers, but to give fans a cross section of the top times. Some performances might have been missed if swimmers competed at road meets. Coaches are welcome to contact the Times-News by e-mail at to report omissions or updated times. Mylinda Hartnett

Hartnett has been a standout for the Bulldogs this season while helping them to a 7-3 start in Region 3. She showed her skills last week during a week when Meadville split a pair of region duals.

The junior won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 25.80 seconds and swam legs on the first-place 200 medley relay and 400 free relay Jan. 30 in Meadville’s 111-59 victory over Strong Vincent. She also won the 200 IM (2:26.96) in the Bulldogs’ 109-60 loss to Villa Maria Feb. 2.

Hartnett will look for a big performance in next month’s District 10 Class AAA championships after she placed second in the 100 breaststroke and third in the 200 IM in 2011.

She is the second Meadville girl to win the Breakout Swimmer award this season, joining sophomore Heather Sternby.

Heather Sternby

Sternby continues to excel during her second season with Meadville.

The sophomore turned in a strong performance Jan. 12 with two wins in a meet against District 10 Class AAA power McDowell. She touched first in the 50-yard freestyle in 25.51 seconds and won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.67.

McDowell won that meet, but Sternby helped the Bulldogs to a 3-2 start in Region 3.

Sternby is coming off an outstanding freshman season. She placed third in the 50 free (25.21) and 100 butterfly (1:05.43) at the District 10 Class AAA championships.

She could be poised to improve on that effort in March.
