Mercer Mustangs
Baseball
Coach (season, record): Jack Thorn (7th season, 42-85)
2012 overall record: 5-14
2012 region record (place): 1-9 (sixth)
2012 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 playoffs.
Top players lost: Graydon Emhoff, Joel Solomon, Jake Dominquez
Top returning players: Danny Miller, Zach Wimer, Nate Guiler, Ryan Thorn, Cody Blose, Landen Glass , Dylan Angermeier, Zane O’Brien, Logan Clarke
Assistant coaches: Andy Kohl, E.J. Thorn
Outlook: Region 2 became even tougher in the offseason with a shakeup. Mercer will have to deal a tougher schedule as the Mustangs try to rebuild this season. Mercer graduated three key players in Graydon Emhoff, Joel Solomon and Jake Dominquez. Emhoff was a four-year starter, while Solomon was a three-year starter at shortstop. Dominquez was not only an important leader as a catcher, he was Mercer’s leading hitter. The Mustangs will turn to several experienced players to lead a young team. Danny Miller, Zach Wimer, Nate Guiler, Ryan Thorn, Cody Blose, Landen Glass , Dylan Angermeier, Zane O’Brien and Logan Clarke are all back this season. Miller, Wimer and Guiler are returning outfielders along with Thorn, who could play second, shortstop or catcher. Blose and Glass are returning infielders along with outfielder Angermeier. O’Brien is back but is recovering from an injury. He may not be back until May. Clarke is another player that could play any position, while Brayton Edwards and Jonathan Scheidhauer are new players that could contribute this season. Mercer has worked hard in the offseason to develop its pitching and replacing the offense lost to graduation will be key. The Mustangs will need several players to step up in the batting order and several pitchers to pitch well this season for Mercer to climb out of the basement in Region 2.
