Griffin Schaetzle

Mercyhurst Prep sophomore Griffin Schaetzle continues to impress on swimming’s biggest stage.

After securing a third-place medal in the 100 free and a sixth-place medal in the 200 free as a freshman, Schaetzle followed that up with two more medals this season at the PIAA Class AA championships.
Schaetzle swam the 100 backstroke in 50.80 seconds to finish second and took fourth in the 200 free with a time of 1 minute, 42.47 seconds. The underclassmen has become an elite swimmer in District 10 and has two more years to collect more D-10 and PIAA hardware.

Robert Sikatzki

Fans who look at the top Class AA swimming times in Erie County this season can see the impact that German exhange student Robert Sikatzki is having.

Sikatzki, a junior at Fairview, has dominated the regular season.  Out of the eight individual swimming events, Sikatzki has the top time in seven. He’s also second in the 100-yard breaststroke. In addition, Sikatzki has been a member of each of the three Fairview relays that have recorded the top times in Erie County.

Among Class AA girls, North East’s Hannah Feucht and Mercyhurst Prep’s Rylee Klomp each have the low time in two events. Meanwhile, Fairview has two of the top three relays.

The following list of times is gathered from meets phoned in to the Erie Times-News this season. The list is not intended to be the definitive times of all Erie County performers, but to give fans a cross section of the top times. Coaches are welcome to contact the Times-News by e-mail at to report omissions or updated times. The list will then be updated.

We will post Class AAA’s top performances later today.

Mercyhurst Prep swim coach Paula Allshouse has resigned effectively immediately. Allshouse cited “minor health issues” in a statement from the school and went on to say that she could not “put in the many hours that are required to coach great swimmers as well as a successful team”.

Allshouse helped lead a resurgence in the Mercyhurst Prep swimming program, which included several state championships in recent history. Mercyhurst Prep will begin looking for a new swim coach immediately. Those interested must contact Mercyhurst Prep athletic director Dan Perfetto by Oct. 5.

Nov. 16 is the first practice date for all winter sports.

David Benczkowski

Benczkowski has been a standout in Class AA for the Lakers for the past few seasons. He put an exclamation mark on his District 10 career Saturday by winning the 100-yard backstroke in a dramatic finish at Penn State Behrend’s Junker Center pool.

He broke his own school record of 54.27 seconds by touching the wall in 53.52 to narrowly beat Corry’s Brent Benedict (53.55) and Mercyhurst Prep teammate Griffin Schaetzle (53.99).

Benczkowski is seeded second in the 100 backstroke entering next week’s PIAA championships at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

He is no stranger to the state meet. In 2011, after placing second in District 10 Class AA in the 100 back (55.42), he finished 10th in the PIAA with his previous best of 54.27.

Benczkowski also will swim on the Lakers’ 11th-seeded 200 medley relay and their 16th-seeded 400 freestyle relay.

(Throughout the next week, the Varsity blog will feature a series of posts about the upcoming PIAA swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.)

Rylee Klomp

Kevin Intrieri

District 10 has boasted some talented swimmers in a large variety of events throughout the years, but this season D-10 has been particularly strong in the sprinting events.

Led by McDowell senior Kevin Intrieri, D-10 saw meet or pool records fall in six events during this past weekend’s District 10 swimming championships at Penn State Behrend.

Intrieri tied the Class AAA meet and pool record with a time of 20.77 in the 50-yard freestyle. He also set meet and pool records in the 100-yard freestyle with a 46.17.

Franklin sophomore Phil Emerson continued his brilliant two-year career by setting Class AA meet records in the 50 free (21.07) and 100 free (46.37). His time in the 100 free was a pool record for a few hours Saturday. Intrieri broke the record later in the day.

Finally, Mercyhurst Prep junior Rylee Klomp set District 10 Class AA meet and pool marks in the 50 free (23.69) and 100 free (51.70).

(Throughout the next week, the Varsity blog will feature a series of posts about the upcoming PIAA swimming and diving championships at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.)

Griffin Schaetzle

Brent Benedict

David Benczkowski

David Benczkowski has been a strong swimmer for Mercyhurst Prep during the past several years, but he was at his best during the District 10 meet Saturday.

Benczkowski, a senior, turned in a personal best of 53.52 seconds while winning the Class AA 100-yard backstroke. He edged a pair of freshman standouts in Corry’s Brent Benedict (53.55) and Mercyhurst Prep teammate Griffin Schaetzle (53.99).

When the PIAA automatic seeds were released Sunday, D-10 received a nice surprise. Benczkowski, Benedict and Schaetzle were seeded second through fourth, respectively, in the 100 backstroke. Each is within striking distance of the No. 1 seed, Mars’ Kurt Muehlheuser, who had a time of 52.85.

So it appears that any of three D-10 swimmers could challenge for a gold medal at Kinney Natatorium when the event takes place March 17.

Benczkowski was the District 10 Class AA runner-up in the 100 back as a junior with a time of 55.42 . He finished 10th in the PIAA in 54.27, but appears ready to improve on that performance.

If the PIAA psych sheets are any indication, District 10 is positioned for a memorable PIAA swim meet March 14-17 at Bucknell University in Lewisburg.

The Fairview boys and Mercyhurst Prep girls in particular will have a healthy number of high seeds entering next week’s state championships.

Also, area swimmers who didn’t advance automatically found out today if they will advance to the PIAA championships based on times. District 10 is well-represented with time qualifiers.

Later this week, the PIAA is expected to release a complete psych sheet including blended seeds for automatic and time qualifiers.

Ryan Campbell

Campbell is one of several talented freshmen on the Lakers’ swimming team this season. Last week, he showed his abilities in a pair of Mercyhurst Prep victories.

Campbell was particularly effective in the distance events Feb. 16 in the Lakers’ win over Meadville. He finished first in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 0.76 seconds) and 500 freestyle (5:24.49) and also led off the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Against Strong Vincent Feb. 13, he swam legs on each of the three winning relays.

Campbell won a close vote against Iroquois’ Dalton Zebrak to become the second Mercyhurst Prep boy to claim the Breakout Swimmer of the Week this season. J.J. Mackowski was honored in January.
