During the PIAA track and field championships at Shippensburg on May 25-26, five Mercyhurst Prep seniors missed their graduation while competing.

That didn’t stop Philip Martone, Carly Vicary, David Benczkowski, Catherine Stark and Paul Cancilla from graduating. The team held its own graduation ceremony in Shippensburg after the five ran. Above is a photograph of the group.

Taylor Pletz

Taylor Pletz is emerging as the next standout distance runner for a strong Mercyhurst Prep program.

Pletz, a freshman, won the 800 and 1,600 at the North East Invitational, hours after competing in the Baldwin Invitational the night before. She ran the 800 in

2 minutes, 28.59 seconds and was on pace to set a meet record before a strong wind slowed her down in the final 100 meters. She ran the 1,600 in 5:30.84 to earn her second event win.

She is a runner to keep an eye on at next week’s District 10 Class AA championship meet.
