Matt Wheeler

Northwestern wrestler Matt Wheeler is having an outstanding junior season.

Wheeler capped the first postseason weekend of individual wrestling with the Section 3 championship at 120 pounds.

His 6-2 decision in the championship match moved his record to 27-2 this season and Wheeler entered this weekend’s District 10 Class AA championship tournament as one of the top seeds in his weight class. He received a first-round bye for winning the section and is automatically in the quarterfinals. During the section tournament, he picked up a 59-second pin in the semifinals to wrestle for the title.

Doug Kreider

Douglas Kreider’s freshman season is off to a terrific start at Northwestern. The 106-pound wrestler picked an impressive 19-second pin as the Wildcats beat Cambridge Springs.

He then carried that momentum into a Region 2 showdown against Cochranton. Even though Northwestern was edged by the Cardinals 39-30, Kreider earned another pin in 3 minutes, 4 seconds.

Kreider didn’t have to wrestle in a five-point loss to Girard as the YellowJackets forfeited the 106-pound match.

Matt Wheeler

Wheeler takes a 29-9 record into the Northwest Region Class AA tournament Friday at Sharon High School. The sophomore qualified as District 10’s fifth seed in the 120-pound division.

Wheeler attained that seed with a 4-1 decision over Fort LeBoeuf’s Adam Borgia in the district’s fifth-place final. It also avenged his 3-1 loss to Borgia in the 120 quarterfinals.

Kane sophomore Jon Gelsick (22-13) will be Wheeler’s first-round opponent when the region meet starts Friday at 5:15 p.m.
