The Ohio High School Athletic Association has added eight wheelchair events to its state track meet for 2013. Check out the story on Cleveland.com.

Would this be a good idea for Pennsylvania to examine? Should the PIAA do it?

This weekend marks the 10-year anniversary of Sheena Gordon’s double-record performance at the 2002 PIAA Class AAA championships. The McDowell great set state records in the high jump and triple jump. Both records still stand.

Check out this recent Varsity Letter featuring Gordon and other Erie County track and field stars.

In addition to Gordon, several former District 10 athletes still own PIAA track and field records. Here’s a list of D-10 athletes’ state records in events that are currently being contested at the PIAA meet: (Records from defunct events are not listed.)

Class AAA girls high jump: Sheena Gordon, McDowell (2002) 5-11

Class AAA girls triple jump: Sheena Gordon, McDowell (2002) 42-10 1/4

Class AAA girls long jump: Nicole Smith, McDowell (2005) 20-3

Class AA girls javelin: Fawn Miller, Lakeview (2008) 167-2.

Class AA boys pole vault: Eric Sparks, Hickory (2005) 15-10

One of the most intriguing subplots at this week’s PIAA track and field championships involves the absence of Penn Wood star Eric Futch.

Futch set the PIAA record in the 300-meter hurdles in 2011 with a time of 36.43 seconds.

However, PIAA officials disqualified Futch from the District 1 meet recently. As a result, he will not advance to the PIAA championships.

Earlier today, Anthony J. SanFilippo of delcotimes.com (Delaware County Daily Times)  posted a column addressing Futch’s situation. It’s an interesting read.
