PIAA track and field updates

Check back throughout the day for updates from all District 10 athletes competing in the PIAA track and field championships in Shippensburg.

Update No. 18
Today’s events have come to a close. The 1,600 relays wrapped up the first day of the PIAA championships. Villa Maria ran the race in 4:11.24 and North East had a time of 4:08.78 but neither reached the qualifying time. The last team in for Class AA girls was Forest Hills at 4:04.05. Grove City ran a 4:15.49 in the Class AAA girls race, but did not qualify.

Things didn’t go much better for the District 10 boys teams. Greenville (3:25.64), North East (3:33.23) and West Middlesex (3:40.40) missed qualifying in the Class AA heats. The qualifying time was 3:25.44. Warren ran a 3:26.09 in the Class AAA race but the Dragons needed to break 3:18.64 to get into Saturday’s championship race.

Update No. 17
District 10 had a tough time in the Class AA girls 200 races as none of the four runners moved on. Eve Gardner (Union City) had the top D-10 time at 26.66 seconds followed by Shamieia Roberts (Villa Maria) at 26.75, Emily Moroco (Reynolds) at 26.78 and Kylie Shafer (North East) at 26.83. The last qualifying time was 26.55 seconds.

Meadville’s Heather Sternby completed the race in 26.16 seconds but missed qualifying in the Class AAA race. Sternby needed a 25.83 to make it to Saturday.

On the boys’ side, Stephen Deak (McDowell) did not run in the Class AAA boys 200 for an undisclosed reason. In the AA race, Clay Allen (West Middlesex) won his heat with a blazing time of 22.49 seconds. He moves on to Saturday’s semifinals. Fellow Big Red Sebastian Grasso missed qualifying. Grasso ran a 23.19 and the last time in was 22.85.

Update No. 15
West Middlesex pole vaulter Luke Patten just missed out on a medal. Patten cleared 13-6 to place ninth. He had the same height as sixth place but he had more misses. Fairview’s Joe Kocan and Reynold’s Alex Kilgore reach 13 feet to finish in a tie for 12th place.

McDowell’s De’Vion Tate takes home a sixth-place medal in the triple jump. He reached 46 feet, 113/4 inches. Wellington Zaza of Strath Haven just missed the state record. Zaza jumped 50 feet, 1/2 inch with the record standing at 50-5. George Junior’s Brian Jones took 12th with a jump of 44-11, while Grove City’s Kyle Trinch jumped 44-81/2 to take 13th place.

Update No. 14
Villa Maria’s Grace Trucilla will compete for her first PIAA medal Saturday after qualifying in the 800. She ran a 2:18.04, while Marina Wareham (Kennedy Catholic) ran a 2:18.39 to join Trucilla tomorrow. In the Class AAA race, Ellis Beardsley ran a 2:28.10 but missed the qualifying mark of 2:15.65.

Ryan Smathers (North East) will compete for two medals Saturday. He qualified in the AA 800 with a time of 1:58.08, while Zach Anderson (Greenville) also qualified at 1:59.75. In the Class AAA race, Slippery Rock’s Ryan Thompson ran a 1:54.49 to qualify for Saturday’s championship race.

The Class AA girls discus results are in. Lauren Lubarski (Hickory) won with a toss of 142-6, while teammates Taylor Woods (139-2) and Jennifer Neider (135-8) took second and third, respectively. Rachel DeMaria of West Middlesex took sixth with a throw of 118-8, and Samantha Black (Seneca) and Amber Bacon (Union City) took seventh and eighth with throws of 118-5 each, respectively.

Update No. 13
The 300 hurdles trials are in the books. Sophie Mazza (Harbor Creek) ran a 49.39 but didn’t qualify for Saturday. Mercer’s Janette Berger (46.41) and Youngsville’s Cassie Swartzbaugh (46.68) also missed qualifying. The final qualifying time in AA girls was 45.65. In Class AAA, Eliza Lowe of Grove City missed the last available slot in the semifinals with a time of 46.52 seconds. She needed a 44.81 to get in to the semifinals.

District 10 had a tough day in Class AA boys hurdles. Clayton Stoyer (Reynolds) ran a 40.52 to miss qualifying along with Collin Tyzinski (Harbor Creek), who ran a 40.76. Greg Miaczynski (Central Tech) won’t compete Saturday in the 300 hurdles. He ran a 39.44 to just miss a spot in the semifinals.

Update No. 12
Chodubski’s distance on the long jump was 18 feet, 63/4 inches. It was her PR and it was good enough for third place. Marshay Ryan of Chambersburg hit 19-53/4. Chodubski will go head-to-head with Ryan Saturday in the triple jump.

Bell’s championship throw in the shot put was 59 feet, 63/4 inches. Yohman was second at 58-31/2. D-10 also took fifth with Sharon’s Zach Porterfield (54-2) and seventh with Luke Lewis (Hickory) at 52-2. Bryn Kaufman of Wilmington just missed medaling. He had a throw of 51-81/2 to take ninth behind Hanover’s Tony Dennis at 52-1/2.’

Side note for the Class AA girls high jump. Lakeview’s Courtney King cleared 5-2 to take third and Laurel Shickler (North East) also hit 5-2 with more misses to take fifth. Linda Roldan of Greenville cleared 5-2 as well but she had too many misses to medal. Roldan finished in ninth place.

Update No. 10
The Class AA girls discus was a Hickory domination. Lauren Lubarski takes home the state championship followed by Taylor Woods and Jennifer Neider in second and third place.

Hickory is starting to rack up the team points in the girls’ competition and is a strong contender for the team title.

The 400 relay races have wrapped up. Greenville doesn’t move on in the Class AA girls competition with a 50.52 performance. Wilmington ran a 52.58 but needed at least a 49.80 to qualify. Grove City ran a 51.03 in the Class AAA girls race but did not qualify.

It looks like the Hickory and West Middlesex boys 400 relays are on pace to meet again. Hickory won its heat at 43.17 seconds, while Middlesex won its heat at 43.02. Cathedral Prep didn’t qualified in the Class AAA race with a time of 43.40 seconds. The Ramblers needed a time of 42.35 seconds.

Update No. 9
Greenville’s Rebekah Petty grabbed second in the pole vault by clearing 12 feet. She lost to a tremendous vault of 12-6 by Waynesburg Central’s Marissa Kalsey.

McDowell junior Anna Chodubski adds a third place medal in the Class AAA long jump to give Erie County its highest finish of the day so far.

It was pretty exciting over at the Class AA high jump. North East’s Alex Schriefer and Hickory’s Corrinn Regginello were the only athletes to clear 5-4. Regginello then hit 5-5 to win the state title.

Hickory also picked up a state title in the Class AA boys shot put with Matt Bell. He edged John Yohman (Wilmington) who beat him at the D-10 meet on Saturday.

Update No. 8
It was almost an all-District 10 shot put final in Class AA boys. Matt Bell (Hickory) and Jon Yohman (Wilmington) will battle one more time in the finals for the state title.

Marina Wareham of Kennedy Catholic is moving on in the Class AA girls 400. She runs a time of 58.46 seconds to clinch a spot in Saturday’s race. Katie Teed (Seneca) ran a 1:00.58 and just missed the final qualifying time of 58.95. Grove City’s Lauren Decker ran a 1:01.66 in the AAA race, but she needed 56.97 to get into the semifinals.

In the boys 400 races, District 10 had only one runner move on. Greenville’s Nico Zahniser ran a 49.11 to win his meet in the AA heats. Youngsville’s Rocco Gatta had 52.02 but he needed 50.25 to qualify. In the AAA race, Stephen Deak (McDowell) ran a 50.61 but did not qualify.

Update No. 7
Just got back from discus and the Hickory contingent of Lauren Lubarski, Taylor Woods and Lauren Neider are throwing with a purpose. Should be an exciting championship round.

Speaking of Hickory, Morgan Richards is in Saturday’s Class AA 1,600 final after running a 5:13.55. Fairview’s Andrea Miller also impresses with a 5:16.86 to make it into the championship race. In Class AAA, Ellis Beardsley runs a 5:35.57 but she does not qualify. The last qualifying time was 5:01.54.

On the boys’ side, Iroquois standout Dalton Zebrak continued his strong season by winning his heat in the Class AA 1,600. He ran a 4:25.73 and will run in Saturday’s championship run. North East’s Ryan Smathers also qualifed with a time of 4:25.47. Connor Gregory of Fairview just missed qualifying with a time of 4:31.87. The last runner in had a 4:29.34.

District 10 sends one runner to the Class AAA 1,600 boys championship. Matt McWilliams (Fort LeBoeuf) just missed getting in with a 4:21.82. He needed a 4:21.46 to get in. Dan Jaskowak (Grove City) earns a spot by running a 4:18.53. Strong Vincent’s Josh Natalie ran a 4:39.13 and missed qualifying.

Update No. 6
Also in Class AAA girls high jump, Warren’s Sabrina Anderson took 12th by clearing 5-2.

District 10 did not have a qualifier in the girls 100. In Class AA, Shamieia Roberts (Villa Maria) ran a 13.09 and Eve Gardner (Union City) ran a 13.11 to just miss qualifying for the semifinals. The last spot went to 12.92 seconds.

In the boys 100, Clay Allen ran an 11.22 to reach the semifinals. Hickory’s DeShawn Coleman false-started in his heat. Sheffield’s Khalil Slaughter had a blazing time of 10.88 seconds to win his heat easily. Grove City’s Erik Record had a time of 11.26 seconds to miss qualifying in AAA. The final qualifying time is 11.21 seconds.

Update No. 5
Sharon leaper Johnathon Jacoway grabs third in the Class AA triple jump with a distance of 45 feet, 53/4 inches. Kyle McKeen of Northwestern just missed a medal. He takes ninth at 43-101/2. Jared Myers (Greenwood) had the same distance but took eighth through tiebreakers.

District 10 has a solid showing at the Class AAA girls high jump. Franklin freshman Abby Jones and Meadville’s Paige Kassab clear 5-6. Neither could get over 5-7, however, which Taylor Morgan of Upper Dublin did to win the state championship. Jones takes an impressive second and Kassab was excited to finish third.

District 10 picks up a qualifier in the 100 girls hurdles. Grove City’s Eliza Lowe finishes the race in 15.21 seconds and moves on to Saturday’s semifinals. Class AA did not go as well. Sophie Mazza (Harbor Creek) ran a 16.37 and Kristen Belko (Hickory) ran a 16.67. The final qualifying time was 16.15.

In the Class AA 110 hurdles, Mercer sprinter Jarred Davis ran a 16.19 and Austin Mirizio (West Middlesex) had a time of 16.36. Neither qualified as the last qualifying time was 15.78 seconds. Class AAA didn’t have a qualifier either. Greg Miaczynski of Central Tech and Jesse Ragon (Oil City) ran times of 15.52 and 15.62 seconds, respectively. The final qualifying time for the semifinals was 15.36.

Update No. 4
The heat is really picking up here and affecting the runners. Sad thing is, the sun isn’t really out yet.

Corbett’s final distance in the shot put was 39 feet. She was kicking herself because her D-10 championship throw of 40-113/4 would have placed third today. Williamsport’s Rachel Fatherly had a huge throw of 46 feet, 91/4 inches to win the event.

Oil City’s Jarred Hollidge finishes in 20th place in the Class AAA discus. He maxed out at 139 feet, 4 inches.

Update No. 3
Corbett takes eighth in the shot put. We are waiting on results.

District 10 did not have a qualifier in either 3,200 girls relay. Mercyhurst Prep finished with a time of 9:56.44 right behind Slippery Rock at 9:54.53 in the Class AA race. Oley Valley was the final qualifier at 9:52.35 In Class AAA, Grove City ran a 10:04.16 but the final qualifying time was 9:26.70.

The 3,200 boys relays had more success. Greenville (8:07.99), Titusville (8:08.59) and Lakeview (8:13.90) all qualified in the Class AA race. Mercyhurst Prep ran an 8:22.35 to miss the final spot by less than 11 seconds (8:11.78).

Grove City ran the Class AAA race in 8:31.37 but the final qualifying time was 7:56.59.

Update No. 2
District 10 has its first medalist of the day. Alexis King of Wilmington takes third in the Class AA long jump. She reached 17 feet, 91/4 inches. Mariah Burns (Wilmington) just missed a medal by taking ninth at 16-101/4. Hickory teammates Allyssa McClure (16-3) and Lauren Lubarski (16-1) took 14th and 19th, respectively.

Corry’s Jaynee Corbett will medal in the shot put as she made the finals.

Running qualifiers will be coming soon. Some technical problems with the PIAA have delayed results.

Update No. 1
The PIAA championships have started as the runners will spend today qualifying for Saturday’s championship events. The PIAA, however, will crown 14 field event champions today. In the first session, District 10 has 15 competitors, including second-seeded Alexis King of Wilmington in the long jump and No. 2 seed Rebekah Petty (Greenville) in the pole vault. I will post results from every D-10 athlete throughout the day.
