Girls
Coach: Todd Wetjen (13th season overall, 2nd season at Rocky Grove, 217-90 overall, 10-13 at Rocky Grove)
2012-13 overall record: 10-13
2012-13 region record: 5-5 (tied for second)
2012-13 playoff results: Lost to Farrell 43-39 in overtime in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Bria Bevier, Tasha Lepley
Top returning players: Amber Nerlich, Aleece Schiffer
Assistant coaches: Butch Welker, Natalie Miller, Sadie Gravatt, Shannon Morrow
Outlook: It didn’t take long for Rocky Grove to adjust to a new coach in Todd Wetjen. The Orioles won 10 games and made the District 10 playoffs for the first time in over a decade last winter. The Orioles will look to repeat that success this season in the second year under Wetjen. Rocky Grove will have to replace starters Bria Bevier and Tasha Lepley. Lepley averaged 4.5 points per game and both leave holes in leadership for the Orioles. Rocky Grove returns standouts Amber Nerlich and Aleece Schiffer. Nerlich averaged 13.3 points per game and was voted to the all-region first team, while Schiffer scored 13.8 points per game to make the all-region second team. Karyn Holden, Lauren Swatzler and Alexa Larson all return as well to compete for playing time. The Orioles could also receive immediate contributions from freshman Kellianne Nerlich. Expectations have risen in Rocky Grove after a successful first year with Wetjen. The former Franklin coach has instilled confidence into the program and could lead the Orioles to another playoff spot this winter. Kennedy Catholic and Farrell look like strong contenders in Region 1 but teams shouldn’t sleep on Rocky Grove. If the Orioles can continue to grow and build some depth, they will be a tough team to beat each night in region play.

Rocky Grove Orioles
Boys
Coach (season, record): Steve Cutchall (8th season, 118-61)
2011-12 overall record: 7-15
2011-12 region record (place): 4-6 (fourth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Christian Schiffer, Shawn Kennemuth, Nathan Stewart, Shawn Wise
Top returning players: None
Assistant coaches: Ben Barrett, Jason Grill, Travis Barkerk, Jeff Davis
Outlook: Rocky Grove will look to start over and rebuild this year with a young team. The Orioles graduated most of their top players, including Christian Schiffer, Shawn Kennemuth, Nathan Stewart and Shawn Wise. Schiffer was voted to the all-region second team and finished with more than 1,000 career points. Rocky Grove missed out on the playoffs last year but if the Orioles develop their younger players, the postseason could be a possibility. Breck Schneider is back after seeing some playing time on the varsity level and could step into a leadership role this winter. Rocky Grove could also see a great deal of contributions from its freshman class, which has the potential to put the Orioles back in the playoffs over the next few years.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Todd Wetjen (1st season at Rocky Grove, 12th season overall, 207-77)
2011-12 overall record: 7-15
2011-12 region record (place): 1-9 (tied for fifth)
2011-12 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class A playoffs.
Top players lost: Katlyn Bell, Haley Nerlich
Top returning players: Amber Nerlich, Aleece Schiffer
Assistant coaches: Marvin Welker, Natalie Keith, Saddie Gravatt, Shannon Morrow
Outlook: Rocky Grove landed an experienced coach in Todd Wetjen in the offseason. Wetjen has more than 200 career wins and two District 10 championships with Franklin. The Orioles graduated Katlyn Bell and Haley Nerlich but everyone else is back. Amber Nerlich scored 12 points per game last winter and Aleece Schiffer scored 9 ppg. Both are returning starters along with Brianna Bevier and Natasha Lepley. Rocky Grove could also receive big contributions from new players Karyn Holden, Lauren Swatzler, Alexa Larson and Miranda Coxson. The Orioles have speed and quickness with a guard-heavy roster but their size could be an issue as well as depth. Wetjen commented that defense and rebounding will be key this season along with taking care of the basketball and good shot selection. If the Orioles buy into a new system and a new coach, they could be an interesting team this winter.
