The Fairview community had a strong reaction to its boys soccer team not being in the District 10 Class A playoffs. District 10 has responded in a big way.

District 10 treasurer Gus Picardo confirmed just minutes ago that Fairview will play against Kennedy Catholic in a Class A play-in match Thursday at Dollinger Field. The match will take place at 6 p.m. followed by the District 10 Class AAA girls championship between McDowell and Strong Vincent at 8 p.m.

The interesting part about this new development? The winner plays Mercyhurst Prep on Tuesday.

The McDowell girls soccer team will chase its 18th District 10 Class AAA championship Thursday at Dollinger Field. The Trojans, who have won five D-10 titles in a row, will play Strong Vincent at 6 p.m.

The Class AAA girls championship has to be played earlier than the rest of the D-10 playoffs because the winner will have to win two PIAA subregion matches to make it to the first round on Nov. 6.

The D-10 champion will host DuBois at a site and time to be determined on Oct. 30 in the first subregion match. The winner moves on to another subregion match Nov. 1 against the District 6 champion in D-6.

The region season has, for the most part, concluded in boys soccer. There are still four region matches to be played but five of the six regions have champions.

Class A contenders Mercer (Region 1) and Mercyhurst Prep (Region 3) locked up their respective region championships along with Class AA teams Wilmington (Region 2), Warren (Region 4) and Harbor Creek (Region 5). The Region 6 championship will be decided on Tuesday when rivals Cathedral Prep and McDowell meet at Gus Anderson Field. Prep and McDowell will likely meet one week later for the District 10 Class AAA championship.

On the girls’ side, three of the six regions have already crowned their champions. Hickory (Region 2), Fairview (Region 3) and Fort LeBoeuf (Region 5) have locked up region titles and playoff spots. Region 1 will likely determine a champion Thursday with Region 4 and 6 determining a champion next week.
